Forums Payment cards American Express Should I/Could I… BAPP downgrade

  • 35 posts

    Hi,

I’ve just got the BAPP with 60,000 bonus avios… I’m close to the bonus spend as have our holiday costs on the card.

I won’t be travelling long haul in the next two years so would only prob use the 241 voucher on economy…

Could I get the 60,000 bonus, then downgrade to the free card before 2 Oct to get the £250 card fee back? An extra £2k for the 241 isn’t an issue – neither is the 1 year vs 2 years or premium cabins….

Yes, won’t be exactly £250 but near or there abouts. Get the 241 and as long as it’s in BAEC no probs. Just don’t cancel BA blue outright as it cancels 241.

It doesn’t (even if Amex themselves might tell you that!) Once it is in your BA account it is safe, you do need an Amex to pay the fees when you use it though but it doesn’t have to be yours

Personally I see little point in downgrading, better to cancel and reset the clock on another bonus in 2 yrs . If you want to earn Avios get a Barclaycard

This certainly was the case up until very recently as we have seen reports that those who cancel their BAPP straight away have had their voucher disappear from their BA account, be careful playing this game.

Had missed that! Not many DPs but better safe than sorry, especially if it was Y1 of having the Amex

60,000 bonus in the account… any risk if I downgrade now? They can’t take the bonus avios out my account can they? Any one know when they are likely to move across to BAEC, do they happen on a certain date each month?
