@captaindaveat the other end of the 3 valleys area you have Meribel, both are quite attractive. Meribel has the better apres – Ronnie’s / the Rond Point very popular!

This comment brings back great memories- apres at the Rond Point after a day on the slopes is one of my favourite places in the world! Meribel is a lovely resort.

Anyone have any recommendations on good (warm) ski gloves that don’t cost more than a flight to the Alps???

either mitts and/or silk liners are the only thing that have consistently worked for me on long cold days

Quite the pivot swapping the Alps for Scotland – although as non-skiers at least you won’t be disappointed by the lack of snow or painfully overcrowded slopes that will inevitable one way or the other at that time of year!

Going to look at that Uniqlo clothing. Anyone have any recommendations on good (warm) ski gloves that don’t cost more than a flight to the Alps???

If you don’t want to spend a great deal, then I would suggest Sport Pursuit and search for “Ski Gloves” or “Heated Gloves”. They have a good range which varies over time, then check against your favourite option by searching for the name of the product online on your preferred browser to see if any company is selling the item for a lower price.

Resurrected thread, as existing schedule ( on return journey ) is to arrive back in Edinburgh on the Friday 4th Jan, and get flight to Exeter same day.
We are now thinking it might be nice to spend a couple of nights in Edinburgh, and fly back to Exeter on the Sunday instead ( Appears to be straight forward to change the LoganAir flight )

So a centrally located , decent quality , but not megabucks hotel ( if such a thing exists….. i use Hiltons various brands mostly, so if any of theres are recommended, that would be good )

PLus , of course , what to do, where to go for a couple of days ? Bit random but i need to schedule in a visit to the Uniqlo shop… why are the majority in The Smoke ?

    Thank you as always

Hate to alarm you, but the 4th January is a Saturday. So you would only need one night. If you meant Friday the 3rd then yes to two nights.

Uniqlo, just order online. They have a size check guide to help you choose anyway.

Hilton wise in Edinburgh, if you have Diamond status then the Carlton, though under serious renovation still it is the most central. Or, for something different there is The Roseate which is one of the SLH hotels and looks decently priced, but on the very West edge of the centre between Haymarket and Murrayfield.

If two nights then I would suggest the Carlton.

I suspect hotels that weekend will be as cheap as they get in Edinburgh! With the 2nd also being a public holiday and Hogmanay revellers having headed away, I’m sure there will be deals to be had across the board.

Ah yes, my mistake, we get back to Edinburgh on the Friday 3rd Jan, so it is 2 nights – appears to be no flights back to Exeter on the Sat, hence the need for 2 nights.
Havnt tried to switch the flight yet anyway.

Im only Silver with Hilton, does that alter the Carlton proposition ?

Uniqlo – need some chinos and look decent for the price, BUT -i have been ordering from other stores like John Lewis lately but the sizes are allover the place… had a really nice pair of Scotch & Soda strides delivered, supposedly 34 waist, but they were mahoosive, and i have put some lard on lately, then get 34 from another place, and cant fasten them up !

Got the Heattech stuff on order on your recommendation, thanks, should be here soon.

If you are happy with the price for the Executive rooms, go for it as would be £208 per night which even as Silver would include breakfast and lounge access. I had a look at prices late last night and the Roseate was a bit more expensive than for one night.

Good point about sizing, though worth a look as you use different brands and sizes you wear to get advised usually matching you up correctly.

Doing 3 nights now ( 3 to 6 Jan ) Considering IBIS STYLES ( St Andrew Square ) Would it be worth signing up to the ACCOR scheme first, before potentially booking this.
Think the Airport tram stops near here, is the location ok ?

Very central, across the opposite side of the square to the tram stop. Signing up to ALL won’t get you much other than points, and a discount on booking through members rates. Also, consider Malmaison if rates are decent as it is also on St Andrews Square.

If you do go with Ibis Styles the top floor suites with balcony have excellent views out across the Forth.

Have just returned from Pyeongchang in South Korea where the Uniqlo HeatTeach came in very handy. What was even handier was that was being able to pick these up from Uniqlo in Bangkok where we live! Temp were down to -10 with the wind and kept us all nice and toasty. Also have Decathlon in Thailand which sells basic ski gear.

When back in the UK in the summer I was able to pick up bits and pieces from eBay and Sports Direct. The Nevica gloves and googles were very well priced for the kids and kept their hands warm and dry. Will be going shopping again in the summer.

Whilst we’re were mainly on snow cannon, it was perfect for the kids fort ski trip and more affordable than Japan and not too busy! Price wise 2 Bed Acc. was £125p/n with breakfast and 75m walk to the lift at the Holiday Inn Alpensia. Lift tickets and ski rental came in at £136 per day for 2 adults 2 children

Was great to be back on the snow since 2017 and the kids first time seeing snow! We had a good dump of fresh snow the day we left which the kids thoroughly enjoyed.

The start of an expensive hobby!
