“Do they visit food banks?” May you live in interesting times. As another poster suggested the only hope for you @hugol0ver is that you buy some Karma with substantial gifts to food banks.

I’ve enjoyed the site today prior to seeing the above. The references to Austro-Hungarian Empire made me think I should reread Winter by Len Deighton. Then the Fray Bentos part made me think of Any Human Heart by William Boyd, another cracking read.

This is why I come here – can’t beat a good helping of moral outrage over first world problems, washed down by some random and excellent reading list recommendations (thanks @dougzz99)!

I have found the ‘lockdown’ Fray Bentos at the very back of the pantry, and now due to this thread feel compelled to drop them at a food bank. Great read suggestions @dougzz99

I wouldn’t drop them off at Food Bank. Few Food Bank customers these days can afford the cost of having the oven on for 40 mins at 190 deg C which is essential to avoiding a soggy bottom. But the puff pastry and rich gravy filling both looks good and tastes delicious. I wouldn’t serve them as a meal on their own, but as part of a selection of finger food that all requires a hot oven (think mini sausage rolls, spring rolls, quiche, etc) they can hold their heads up high.

How many Frey bentos pies would you have to stand on to be able to see eye to eye with him?

More or less than Sam Fox?

Slightly fewer than Sam Fox, I think, though neither of us exactly struggle with leg room! I don’t think the pie tins would make a very stable base for standing on, though.

Also a fan of William Boyd. I had to read The Blue Afternoon twice to work out how the ending transpired, though. Restless was excellent. Have a few more of his in my reading pile as well.
