Forums Frequent flyer programs British Airways Club Thailand with a 18-month old

  • 75 posts

After lots of to and fro regarding our cancelled BKK flights, we got them rebooked on Qatar. It took an email to the CEO to get things moving.

Now to the next phase. Figuring out where to go. Any recommendations of resorts or hotels for a young family? On our shortlist are Phuket, Krabi and Hua Hin. A local Thai resident has suggested Centara as the best brand to go with—many of their hotels receive great reviews.

What do folks on here suggest?

18 month kids from Europe are extremely popular in Thailand so your hotel staff will have them dancing on the reception desk if my experience with 12 and 36 month old blondies is anything to go by. Just relax – whatever you decide will be just perfect, I would instinctively say go for Phuket choice/ cost/ value 4* hotel for reasonable cost and breakfast included keeps you going until dinner 🙂

No idea about the hotel brand you mention but I would just say Thailand does hotels & hospitality extremely well, very hard to go wrong – sure, read a few reviews but be more concerned about location, beaches, weather. Abundance of great hotels with great service, surrounded by excellent cheap restaurants with wonderful food.

You can easily avoid the seamier side.

Stayed at Centara Krabi pre-covid. Thought Centara was a mid-range brand with decent hotels. But I could be wrong – they might have high end hotels as well.

The global chain hotels like Accor, Marriott etc have multiple options, suitable for every budget. You can use your status and also get points that can be used somewhere else.

As jarad99 says, Thailand is renowned for hospitality and you won’t have issues managing the kid.

Your problem might be that you may not be able to make the most of the activities, especially Krabi which is famous for island tours on speed boats.
But if you plan to just stay in a resort and do less adventurous activities, you’ll still have a great time.

    Hi vetjames,

For too many reasons than I have time to list, you want to stay at The Slate in Phuket (formally the Indigo pearl). It’s a very special place full of surprises and not your typical hotel. Has great service and a great kids pool.

I’m going there (on my own for some child free time) later this month just to take stock and do some planning and relaxing. It will be my 5th visit.

We do like to stay in very high end properties in The Indian Ocean…. It’s not quite that level but it’s enchanting never the less

    It’s an awesome place. Enjoy.

The Centara Hua Hin is gorgeous (you can pre-book a car directly from BKK airport, about 3 hours).
Having said that, we also had a great time at the Hua Hin Marriott with our toddler: fantastic kids’ pool/splash area, so definitely more of a family feel, horse rides on the beach, and right in the centre of town for any sudden purchases kids often necessitate! A trip with a few days in each hotel would be great.
NB the beaches are not island-level, of course, but we love combining Hua Hin with a Bangkok visit, avoiding the extra flight from an island.

I think your priority should be trying to outsmart the weather. From what I understand this is now harder to do than it has been historically, but start with the climate charts and work from there. Get this wrong and it could be a pretty miserable experience.

Or tell us which month you intend to travel in and we can pitch in accordingly.

Would have been close on 15 years back now but took my eldest two (1 & 3 at the time) to Koh Samui. We just stayed in a small independent place with a pool and right on the beach. As noted up thread, the staff absolutely doted on them both.

We’re there for two weeks in early November

we went in November about 6 years ago and couldn’t agree more about the hospitality. If going to Hua Hin, you don’t have to drive, get the fast train – this doesn’t stop everywhere, has aircon and serves a light snack (imagine a boiled egg in a bag. ok I know I’m not selling it…). You get to see a bit of the different types of landscape and it’s pretty comfy.

Also don’t forget to get a proper Thai massage. You’ll be able to cope with anything a toddler can throw at you after having someone walk all over you for half an hour.

Hey @vetjames … my family (older kids) went to Phuket back in 2019 and we had a really great stay at the Katathani Resort there. Think it’s a great option to consider for you.

The beach across the hotel is super wide and clean and is practically private to the hotel (though it’s actually public). The rooms were great and there are several eating options nearby as well as a small run of shops – 7-eleven etc.

    Worth looking into.

@rashomon – looks great. Will look into that one.
