Upgrade from free to Premium with £10,500 – Do i get the upgraded vouche

I currently have spent £9500 on my free BA Amex Card. My Anniversary is Mid November (I know about the limits changing in Nov, ill be going over before then). I want to upgrade to the paid card in the hope that I get the 2 year CV for business class flights.

If I spend another £1000 on my free card now (so not triggering the voucher yet), THEN upgrade to the paid card, which has the spending threshold of £10,000, will I automatically get the 2 year CV allocated to me when i get the card? Very specific scenario, but hope someone has experienced similar? THANKS !

Why not upgrade and THEN spend the last £500. What’s the advantage of what you are thinking? A few days fees saved but the chance you get a 1 year voucher or some other issue you need to chase down?

I want the companion poucher to activate as late as possible, later in October for use in 2 years. September is really too early for what we want to do

The crux of the issue is that we are about to book an Avios companion voucher flight and need an AMEX. My fiance no longer has hers, and I might have to use mine. What are the chances of using a AMEX that doesn’t belong to this address?

You can use any Amex to pay try a dummy booking and see if it lets you put a different address at the payment stage?

Basically your only issue is the card triggers the voucher as soon as you upgrade the card but you end up with the free cards voucher rather than the BAPP one. Used to happen a lot in the past but no idea these days and if it does then it’s hassle with Amex to get the right one issue. So it’s really just a case of which do you want a guaranteed easy life but voucher a few weeks earlier or potentially a more tricky one.

Thank you everyone. I was reluctant to go into detail with Amex directly, but just had the chat and I have it in black and white that what I want WILL happen. If im over the threshhold (but under £12k), I will get the Premium Companion Voucher! 🙂

That wasn’t in any doubt though, the issue is that sometimes you can end up getting the 12-month voucher and then you have to chase Amex to get it changed to the 2-year one. This information has been available in articles and threads on here for years!

The clarification that I was given in black and white was that I will get the 2-year premium card voucher, not the one year one. So at least if I do get the wrong voucher I have proof that I was advised otherwise. That was the clarification I was looking for 👍🏻

Yes keep that clarification safe as some Amex reps would tell you to stay on the boat as Titanic is sinking.

@magicmat as I said do you want to 100% guaranteed easy life or the perhaps hard one. What the CS says really means nothing because when it’s posts incorrectly with 1 year validity they will make you jump through the same hoops to fix it as anyone else with the issue.

Though generally Amex are quicker than most with their corrections. But you can see on here that Amex don’t try care what their CS tell people even when it costs them thousands of points off false information.
