Forums Payment cards American Express Using Membership Rewards points for BA Long Haul

  • 1 post

Hi all, I’m a newbie when it comes to points and Avios. I have an Amex Gold card with just over 40k points on it, and I am looking to fly London to Singapore with BA (approx £600 cash value). How can I use my points most effectively?

Should I just convert all my Amex points to Avios and use them all for part payment on the BA price? Or am I better off paying cash for the flight (and collecting the extra Amex points) and then redeeming the Amex points somewhere else?

Using Avios for part payment is generally bad value. See: https://www.headforpoints.com/2024/01/22/is-part-pay-with-avios-for-british-airways-flights-worth-it/. I believe you’ll also lose your Avios if you have to cancel.

You’ll want to find a dedicated Avios seat via Book > Book flights with Avios on the BA website. A one way off peak economy flight to Singapore with BA costs 40,000 Avios, but there will be limited availability due to high demand for this route. I would suggest looking at Qatar flights instead (via the BA website), since they have more availability and their Economy class is better.

You’ll likely get the best value for money redeeming for business class on Qatar, but you will need more Avios for that.
