Your thread title sounds as though you have found yourself in a predicament where you need travel insurance but haven’t got it!

It depends very much on your age and any current health conditions but the comparison sites like Go Compare and Money Supermarket are a good place to start.

Best thing would to look at MSE

    How old are you?

How long do you go for?

    Long haul\short haul-USA\Caribbean? Cruising?

    Any medical issues?

    Lots of variables.

Yes use the likes of go compare and money supermarket and compare the offerings.

Insurance should be selected because it meets YOUR needs which aren’t the same as mine of of Northernlass or anyone else.

I chose my policy based almost exclusivly of the healthcare covering (my long haul trips are to the US so you can see why) rather than on other terms like delayed or cancelled flights, luggage damage etc may be more important for you,

If your trips are longer than 31 days thats another requirement. As are if you do various sporting activities and so on.

moneysavingexpert is the best option for guidance.

Cheapest is NOT the best, because cheap policies will do all they can to avoid paying out. Expensive ones are more liberal. The MSE best buy is always quite expensive but has excellent feedback.

Definitely health care cover is the most important, so expect the premium to increase if you want USA/Caribbean included. Next for me is cover for getting us home if an airline wasn’t responsible for whatever reason.

Personal possessions not that important, we don’t travel with anything hugely valuable.

The which? guides are also very useful to understand the terms and what to look for.

Be very very careful. Many of the companies on MSE or other comparison sites have absurd restrictions regarding trip length and activities.

Given the focus of this website, worth noting a number of insurance providers exclude airmiles and points from claims.

And given the stories that do the rounds “you went to the GP 18 months ago and they diagnosed a chest infection but you didn’t declare it so we won’t cover this claim for emergency dental work…” you might also want to look at https://www.medicaltravelcompared.co.uk/

The pre-existing disclaimer forms are typically standard across insurers so they just add this layer in. If the condition is disclosed and there’s no impact on the premium then you also get a note to say you have made the disclosure.

We’ve been with this company for years https://www.philipwilliams.co.uk/products/travel-insurance/.

Claimed twice with no problems, excellent price and cover.

We landed on the Virgin Money Club M current account that comes with an included insurance policy. £12.50 per month for 2 people with much more reasonable terms than the ones that come up cheapest on the price comparison websites
