Forums Payment cards American Express Which date do Amex use for the 24 month rule?

One thing I have never seen (and not had to worry about previously) is which date Amex use as the reference for the two year clock. Having held the BAPP for more years that I can recall, I cancelled it for the Barc-avios in 2022.

I am now approaching the 2yr mark and plan to reapply. I know all the key dates relating to the original account, including that it took two months (with staements generated) after the cancellation date for the refund to be paid out and the account finally zero’d.

Often it is said about how pointless it is to ask Amex reps and that it is important to keeo your recrods, which I have, I just don’t know which to use! I recall comments stating that it is not from the date on which I requested Amex to close the account.

Ring and ask. There’s too much at stake to get it wrong, unless you’re happy to leave a clear gap of a month or so.

@CarpalTravel they would have sent a letter stating your card account was closed on XYZ date, THAT is the date that matters.

Refunds can come many months even years later onto a card, these then need to be returned to you etc, all of which generates statements but those are all irrelevant to the account closure date, which is what counts.

@Rob – I would have done that rather than post here and bother you all with the question, but I thought that is the very thing we know Amex CS are notoriously unreliable for providing?

    – That is great info, I know the date on that letter so that is perfect. I shall allow a bit of extra time to pass, just to gap it a bit!

Thank you both, your replies are appreciated.

I’m in the same boat with my wife’s card. She cancelled her BAPP about two years ago but we can’t remember when…. she’s a supplementary holder on my plat and used the chat on the app to ask when her BAPP was closed down. They gave us the exact date pretty quickly if you want to double check.

My records show that I cancelled my BAPP card on 27 Dec 2021 so I reapplied on 28 Dec 2023. I clocked up £3,000 worth of spending recently so I called Amex this morning and’s asked when the 36,000 bonus Avios would be paid.

Disaster..they said I cancelled on 31 Dec 2021 so I would get nothing. I threatened to leave and the best they could offer me was a 5,000 Avios retention bonus in 3 more months on a further £1,000 of spending.

Very annoying. Lesson learned, I should have called Amex before reapplying but as I wasn’t a cardholder then (only a supplementary cardholder on my wife’s account) I assumed I wouldn’t even be able to get through security..

Bad start to the week..will now have to buy the points I’ve lost through Avios Boost etc
