Forums Frequent flyer programs British Airways Club Wrongly calculated Avios and fees using Amex 241

I went online and used an Amex 241 to book 2 off-peak flight from LHR to SCL for 110,000 Avios and £700 in fees. A few weeks later, I phoned up to book the return, which should have been a further 120,000 Avios (peak) and additional fees to bring the total to £1,119.48.

However, what BA actually did was to return the initial 110,000 Avios and take a new total of 203,000. They also charged an additional £710, bringing the total fees to £1410. Doing a fresh search, I can see that 203,000 Avios is one of the options they give for the return journey but the fees should only total £1329.48, so I’ve been overcharged by £80.52.

Has anyone else experienced this rather random approach to Avios and fees by BA when using a 241?

When you add a sector, BA will recalculate the taxes which can work for and against you. Some of the elements that make up the total aren’t static so before contacting BA, you need to check the breakdown for what you have been charged and the the breakdown on your dummy booking as it’s possible BA is correct. £40 each isn’t a particularly big variance.

If the recalculation of cash element is going to work against you, make 2 separate bookings and ask for the 50% avios back on the return leg. See the “boking the return leg” thread for lots of discussion on this!

Thanks, both. Going forward, it sounds like it’s easier to book the return leg online. Not sure it’s worth the stress of trying to get the £80 back on the existing booking.
