More problems with points theft at Tesco and elsewhere

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

More and more tales of points and miles theft are popping up at the moment.  This is nothing new (I wrote about Clubcard points theft last year) and little seems to have improved.

Whilst Tesco Clubcard theft is the most reported problem, it also impacts other programmes.  JAL Mileage Bank, for example, emailed members last week to report that redemptions for Amazon Gift Certificates had been stopped with immediate notice.  They should have learnt their lesson after IHG Rewards Club suffered a similar problem last year.

(Theft via Amazon is too easy.  Most programmes email you an Amazon voucher code as soon as you redeem.  You can place an order immediately for overnight delivery to an Amazon locker or pick up point.  The thief has the goods before you even notice.)

Meanwhile, Head for Points reader Andrew sent me this email last week:

I’d like to let you know that the Tesco voucher theft problem is still happening.  I’ve had over £1000 (thousand!) stolen just over a week ago and all redeemed in one day in stores in the Kent area.  I had no idea of this issue until I googled the problem and found many articles on it!  Tesco have agreed to replace all the vouchers.

Recent posts on Flyertalk reveal the theft on £60, £130 and £900 of Clubcard vouchers.  In all cases, Tesco has reimbursed those who were impacted.

There are two ways this can happen.  The first is that paper vouchers are stolen somewhere between Tesco and your house.  The second is that your online account is hacked and the vouchers are redeemed electronically.   Whilst it is likely that these are inside jobs, Tesco receipts do print your entire Clubcard number (apart from the last digit) plus your current balance, which makes it easy to see if you are worth hacking.

My usual suggestion is to use a service such as Award Wallet to track the balances of all your miles and points programmes.  Run it once a day and you will see any that have gone missing within 24 hours.  For Tesco, Award Wallet also tracks the amount of unredeemed vouchers on your account from previous periods.

Some people have concerns about sharing passwords with a service like Award Wallet, although you can operate it by having the passwords stored on your PC rather than on their servers.  I would rather have the overview and take the (very small) risk of Award Wallet ever getting compromised.

I got my online account hacked last year. I got the points back the following quarter after a few phone calls. The tesco operator said she knew who had used my points as they had used their own clubcard. She also said that they were well known to them!!!
On the AW site you only appear to see current points and not the accrued vouchers and it’s the accrued vouchers that are at risk and not the current points so any reduction in your vouchers wouldn’t show on AW??

    • Rob says:

I see both, not sure if that is because I pay for Premium. However, as you can pay anything you want ($1) for Premium there is no reason not to upgrade.

      • Alex says:

I’ve got premium as well. I’ve checked online and there is a post from no other than you Raffles on Paid to shop forum back in July 2011 saying that it can take a few days for Tescos points to show in AW. Will wait and see.

        • Rob says:

AW has changed its system numerous times since then though!

If you have Premium, do not bother with the desktop version. Use the app instead. For Premium members, it checks your balances in parallel – not one at a time – so the whole thing takes 30 seconds. Only on the app though.

          • Alan says:

Sadly only on the *iOS* app 🙁 Being a premium member gets you nothing extra on the useless Android one. I like the email updates they send out after a balance change though.

  • Idrive says:

Alex, i do not understand what you mean. both AW on web and on Iphone app show both Coupon Value and points.

    • Alex says:

That’s what I thought it would be but after balance it’s got n/a. I’ve added other household accounts and it’s the same on them as well

      • Nick Burch says:

You probably need to click the + to expand it – it should show you both voucher value and points when you do so.

  • Frenske says:

I would be best for Tesco to create an Club point to Avios conversion promotion as soon as ppssible to avoid losing more money. After all we are sitting on a big stack of potential targets for thiefs.

  • Trevor says:

I don’t have the largest balance at about £600 across 3 accounts, plus I do paperless statements and shred the bottom of every till receipt. Call me paranoid, but I’ve never been the victim of fraud and hope I won’t be affected here either.

  • 1baloo says:

After having my account hacked; a Tesco reimbursed all my vouchers. Great. Today I went to transfer the lot to my BA Account and guess what the account has been hacked again and vouchers taken. Should have £442 but instead have £7.50……….here we go again in an attempt to resolve the issue.

Password changed but is it enough……….

    • AndyGWP says:

I suppose it depends on how you access your account – a trojan infected computer could just as easily be used to steal passwords, or maybe a (malicious) open wifi hotspot could in theory (though you’d think the target for that would be banking)

If your password is complex (ie. upper / lower + special characters) and fairly unique (ie. G4xx!zPLm9090%%R ) then you should be looking at security and comprises on the computer you’re using 🙂

(PS. hope G4xx!zPLm9090%%R isn’t your password 😉 if so, you may want to change it now 😀 )

      • 1baloo says:

HA HA HA. TESCO were very good reimbursed ALL vouchers and will put them straight into my BA ACCOUNT. Let’s hope they do not access that account and fly off on holiday on me!!!

      • colibob says:

12121212 served me fine for years. I’ve changed it once in that time to 21212121 too!
Perhaps isn’t the best password either.

I am checking my Clubcard balances once a day, every day at the moment though, due to have almost £500 in vouchers and no Avios bonus transfer available!

        • colibob says:

^^ This isn’t my real name either, or my real email address!
H4P would be a goldmine for anyone looking for people to ‘hack’ lol

  • Polly says:

Anyone notice tesco momento petrol is not getting its double points any more, when using the tesco credit card as a club card? Just checked two receipts from yesterday and today, just basic 1 point per £1.

    • Rob says:

Someone mentioned that to me in an email last week. It is still on the website though.

  • Andrew says:

Just reported my Tesco clubcard theft to Action Fraud. A very helpful operator was very familiar with the Tesco problem. He reckoned until recently half their calls were reporting voucher theft. Said it ran to thousands of calls, but that it had slowed down in the last few weeks.

  • Mark says:

I had a voucher of mine used at a store in London a few weeks ago (I live in Edinburgh) and I don’t think the mailing was intercepted. The other vouchers in my account were not used (if a hacker had accessed my account they would have used all the vouchers to get maximum return for their efforts).

I think there may be a bigger problem with the Clubcard voucher system that is being exploited (such as predictable voucher numbers).

I think the reason that the Clubcard vouchers are not linked to individual cards is that it would cause difficulties with joint accounts or where somebody has picked up a new card with a different number (when ordering [ink cartridges] online my mother’s points get credited to an old [lost] card number).

    • Mark says:

Just opened my latest mailing, all the coupons are money off, rather than extra points. Is this a trend for anybody else.

The best money off (or extra points) vouchers they sent were the ones that worked in conjunction with other offers (such as xx off finest main and xx off finest wine that worked with the £10 meal deal [these were often even better as the vouchers caused an error and were overridden by the staff, allowing another coupon to be printed out online and used])
