IHG Rewards Club, the Holiday Inn, HI Express, Crowne Plaza, InterContinental etc loyalty scheme, has launched a website for its Autumn 2017 promotion – IHG Accelerate. Yes, it is repeating the Autumn 2015, Spring and Summer and Autumn 2016 and Spring and Summer 2017 offer!

But that is not a bad thing.

To be honest, during the last 18 months IHG has been the only major hotel chain offering global promotions which offer genuine outsize value.  Everyone has their own personal target but, for most of us, the challenge is pretty straightforward.

IHG Rewards Club

Here are the headline details:

IHG Accelerate (Version 7) covers stays from 1st September to 31st December

All hotels are participating, including Kimpton Amsterdam (which was, despite what IHG told me, excluded from the Summer version of Accelerate)

Your bonus is personalised – you need to log in here to discover yours

This was my target for 48,100 points maximum, comprising:

  • 5,000 points for a stay in September
  • 2,000 points on my next stay
  • 10,000 points for staying five nights
  • 4,000 points for booking a two-night weekend stay
  • 2,500 points for two stays booked via my corporate rate (the company I haven’t worked for in 6 years!)
  • 6,600 points for booking a Bonus Points Package
  • 2,000 points for getting the IHG credit card
  • 5,000 points for renewing my Ambassador membership
  • 11,000 points for completing six of the seven targets above, excluding the September bonus

Getting the lot could be a little tricky, to be honest, given my Autumn plans.  However, the Accelerate one is basically free points as I was going to do that anyway.  I could get 13,600 points for a one-night stay in September on a Bonus Points Package rate, so it would make sense to fit that into my schedule if possible.   Let’s see how it goes.

My wife got this one for 43,000 points:

  • 3,000 points for a stay in September
  • 2,000 points on her next stay
  • 10,000 points for staying five nights
  • 3,200 points for two stays booked via the IHG app
  • 2,400 points for making a ‘points and cash’ redemption stay
  • 1,500 points for paying for a stay with her IHG credit card
  • 600 points for spending $60 on food and beverage
  • 20,300 points for completing five of the six targets above excluding the September bonus

This is an interesting one.  One cash stay in September, booked on the app with $60 spent on food and drink and the bill paid on the IHG credit card, would earn 9,500 points and tick off three of the five boxes needed for the final bonus.  It would then need either a 2nd app booked cash night or a ‘points and cash’ redemption to trigger the final chunk.

Note that if you have a target which involves meeting a certain ‘food and beverage’ spending target, this is EXCLUDING VAT for UK stays.  IHG also uses a weak exchange rate when converting your spend to US$.  If you were asked to acheive $39 of cumulative spend (£31), you actually need to spend £37 due to the 20% VAT and in reality probably need to do £40 due to the FX rate IHG uses.

A note on rebooking

Most of the time, existing bookings – ie bookings made before 1st September – made online do count for this promotion.

Last time, however, some people got an app booking target which DID specifically state that stays must be booked after the starting date.  If you have a ‘book stays via the app’ target then check the small print and be prepared to rebook.

Conclusion

As long as your target is sensible, this is highly likely to be the most generous hotel promotion you are likely to see this Autumn.  And, with four months to hit your target, you have plenty of time to make the necessary stays.

Log in to the Accelerate website here, register and see what your target is.

Any ideas why I’ve got a corporate discount target, or how to get one? To my knowledge I’ve never used one before.
If I can’t do that then I’m scuppered as I need to stay in 3 countries!

    • Rob says:

Look in your profile. A number may be there in the corporate discount box.

    • HayMow says:

That happened to my husband after he stayed in an IHG hotel booked by his company’s corporate travel agent (and subsequently gave them his IHG member no.), so could be if you’ve had an IHG booking through work?
If you contact IHG customer services online to complain that it’s not achievable for you because…, they may well credit you with the points for that target (worked for my husband on a credit card target). But that won’t help you with your X out of Y targets Achievement Bonus, as they told us even though the points were credited for the unachievable target, it wouldn’t count towards the Bonus (or again that was the case for my husband early this year).

      • Alex W says:

Thanks. I am stuffed in any case as I no longer work for my previous employer (tautology?) that must have had the corporate code.

  • GK says:

As they keep running this promo, one hopes they’ll get around to fixing the tech so it updates timely..

  • HiDeHi says:

I have one which is “successfully apply for credit card”. I assume successfully apply, means you have to be accepted for the card?

I kinda feel like one could argue that as long as you fully complete and submit an application, then you have successfully applied for a card, whether your application is accepted or not. Am I just being silly?

    • Graeme says:

do the terms of that target not offer some enlightenment as to what the definition of successfully happy mean?

      • Graeme says:

apply obviously (darn auto correct) – though you may also be successfully happy 🙂

    • Ikaz says:

I had that target once, I applied and wasn’t accepted and didn’t get the bonus. I didn’t bother contacting customer services as it wasn’t critical for my overall target, but they could be flexible?

      • Crafty says:

At risk of telling you what you already know… you should avoid ever applying for credit where you think there’s a chance you will be rejected. Certainly not for a few hotel points!

    • Alex W says:

If you’re that worried about being rejected, think carefully before applying, as another credit search will not help your credit history!

  • Simon says:

For mattress running it may be worth sharing the cheaper hotels in order to hit the targets.
I have ‘stayed’ at HIX Hemel Hempstead and HIX Colchester for between £20-30 before.
I could probably hit my targets in 5 nights by booking a variety of things, so I guess that is around £150 for 38,000 points.

    • David says:

I wish I could sell you some points at that rate, I have loads! What value are you getting out of them if you are buying them at 0.4p? The best I have seen the Colchester HIX one was £48 but I prefer the Ipswich Orwell one due to location and spend the 15k points.

      • Simon says:

Yeah, I should of added that doing only mattress runs for it isn’t great value at that cost.

Previously I have topped up with one of two nights just to get the rewards but I had genuine needs for the other nights.

        • David says:

As long as you get value out of it as you can “buy” 10k points for £50

Impossible…although making 400K points this year may have counted against me this time.

    • Lady London says:

Weirdly, as I have so many hotel nights to book this year for travel I can’t get out of (50-100 depending on plane timings) I would really like to have your target @joe frampton !! For 140000 since I am doing that number of nights already, I would even divert bookings from other chains to make the target.

  • Jonathan says:

Rob, I stayed at the Kimpton Amsterdam at the end of last month and it did count towards my Accelerate offer (summer version). I thought it wouldn’t have counted but I was pleasantly surprised when it did! I didn’t even have to contact IHG for it.

    • Rob says:

Weird. IHG has even given me compensation equal to my lost Accelerate points.
