Get very cheap Avios when you buy HP ink cartridges from Tesco

Tesco Direct has brought back its occasional offer on HP printer ink cartridges – but this time it is 50% more generous.

You usually get 500 bonus Clubcard points when you buy two cartridges.  This time, though, they are offering 750 Clubcard points when you buy two.

To add to the deal, you also get a 20% discount when you buy three or more cartridges.

Note that this offer is also available in-store, if your store is big enough to sell ink cartridges.  I don’t know if the ‘20% discount for buying 3 or more’ discount applies in-store.  However, you would save £3 on postage and you would also be able to use any money-off coupons you may have.

To see these deals, search for ‘HP ink’ on Tesco Direct and – in the left hand margin at the bottom – filter the sellers down to just Tesco.  You can then reorder the list of products by price.

You should, if it is still in stock, see various cartridges with the read ‘Special Offer’ text under them.  The cheapest seems to be this one, a Black HP364 at £9.

So, lets run some maths.

You buy 6 of the HP364 cartridges for £54.  The 20% discount takes you down to £43.20.  Postage is £3 (you cannot collect these instore) so your total cost is £46.20.

Total Clubcard points earned = 43 base points + 2250 bonus points = 2,293 points

Total Avios earned from converting at 1:2.4 = 5,503 Avios

That works out at just 0.82p per Avios.

And, of course, you still have the cartridges.

Let’s assume that you manage to sell the HP364’s on eBay for £4 each, net of fees and postage.  Your total cost will have been £21 for 5,503 Avios.  Note that these cartridges are quite fat and so postage costs are higher than usual, although if you do ‘buy it now’ and say you have six for sale, many customers will buy two or three at once.

Alternatively, you could send them to Tesco Recycling.  This is a lower return but is less hassle.  I believe that they accept new cartridges, and you will receive 50 Clubcard points on the HP364 cartridges as you can see from the list on their site.  That takes your total haul from the 6 cartridges to 2,593 points, or 6,223 Avios points for £45.12.

You can but you would either have to get your purchase below £25 (eg & use the change on Amazon voucher) or amalgamate cards to get a higher possible spend (and amalgamation costs a fee).

  • lap1 says:

Placed two seperate orders today. 18 blacks and 12 colour, one order is partially confirmed and the other is partially ready for dispatch? I ordered early on so can’t see it being a problem with stock?

    • chris says:

i dont think that the whole uk stock matters, as to who ordered early on, since this was most likely live a few days before it was posted here,

since tescos have 40 or so online order depots over the uk and send from your local one, witch those maybe keep 10000 or so on hand at a time (maybe more but just making a point)

so everything would of already been on a delayed dispatch due to stock,

  • Mark says:

The prize is more £10,000 in Clubcard vouchers rather than 1,000,000 Clubcard points since you can’t use them for rewards or Clubcard Exchange vouchers (now Boost but Amex don’t seem to have quite caught up…).

    Still worth having…..

  • Dave says:

Just dipped my toe into this world for the first time.

    10 x HP364 = £70
    -20% = -£12.60
    code = -£10
added LG charger to get +£1 delivery
    Total = £48.40

    Clubcard = 3797, Avios = 9113, 0.53p/Avios (and I still have 10 cartridges)

I don’t even have a ebay account, so that’s next on the list.

    • Rob says:

Don’t forget my ebay affiliate link! They especially like fresh customers!

  • chris says:

the real question is what to do with them after you get them,

and seems i know how to make 2p profit selling them at 7.17£ ea infect all are already presold, as in got someone interested in buying

    • Daz says:

How did you manage to get that price, mind sharing? Sounds like a great price! 🙂

      • chris says:

some buyers thing the box is important (more proof of genuine, having the true exp date since the date is on the box not the white sealing ect), and most ebuyers sell without the box or charge extra for the box due to postage cost, (the avg ebay boxed 364 price is £9.80)

tho bulk selling is always better, like i said i only have to sell at 6.67 each witch is under most ebay single ink non boxed to make a small profit (currently got another bulk lot up for £186.76 + pnp witch should go quick, even with the market flooding with these, since as said people (some anyways) like boxes

when you selling in bulk the postage costs make no diffent as the postage for the all 28 as tesco sent them this morning is £15.00 for next day, tho if you sold them one but one your be paying £114.80 for 1st recorded (cheaper if just normally mail ofc but without recorded you get non recieved claims and with out 1st class your buyers go else where cos your delivery speed is slow), so as the math shows bulk with next day delivery is better,

i could even lower the price and move them a lot quicker and still make a better profit (or smaller loss in this case) tho i say profint in the points. than sellers that do one by one sales

        • chris says:

and my 6.67 is right for the 7.17 ea i said in the frist post since in the second i put plus pnp since i charge £14.24 for pnp

making the total £201, witch is £7.17 a unit, witch most people do still think is a good deal for boxed ink as explain above

and a lot of small business do source ink from ebay in bulk (since most dont get the deals that retailers does from the mfg tho they could just have to buy in i think hp asks for £20k at once before discounting to a sane price for they retail channel to small business),

  • Simon says:

Well my 3 black 364s arrived this morning…..quickest delivery I have ever had. Ordered at 10.28 on Thursday, delivered at 9.30 on Friday!

    • whitenoise says:

Yep my 18 black 364s arrived this morning as well after ordering them yesterday!

  • uk1 says:

My 24 arrived although the website says they haven’t been sent yet!

A question for anyone who actually has a printer …. are there any printers that will just work with the black ink inserted ie without cartidges in the colour bays?

    • chris says:

not that i know of (tho i havent used every model of printer but most), tho you can always just buy or keep old empty colors to use to trick the printer (not really much of a cost since they will never need replacing since you just running as black, just turn of or put up with the non stop reminders you color ink is low)

  • uk1 says:

    … actuially it was 48 … 24 each …!
