Sky reversing recent 3V Virtual Visa card payments

A quick heads up that Sky appears to be reversing payments that were made on 3V Virtual Visa cards in recent days.

As I reported last week, 3V suddenly blocked their cards from being used for paying bills or into bank accounts.  Sky appeared to have slipped through, though, even though payments to Virgin Media were blocked.  Some people used up their 3V supply by pre-paying their Sky account.

If you did this, take a look at your Sky account.  You may find that your payments have been reversed.  They will take a day or so to be sent back to 3V, but in theory your online 3V account will show those cards credited back with the £25 payments at some point.

This is, obviously, incredibly frustrating for people who have 3V cards to use up.  Current advice seems to be a) try your council tax then, if that fails, b) try paying your utility provider.  If that fails, try c) buying a pile of Amazon gift certificates to cover a few months of Amazon purchases.

After that, you may find it easier to d) pay the £1.70 to merge cards together, and then pay the £3.50 fee to empty out the combined card into your bank account.

p.s try activating the free trial with a 3v 😉

  • blenz101 says:

No problems here (so far) with 4x£25 payments made on the 11th Dec which was enough to cover a single months viewing.

What’s the source of the reports? Be interested to know if it’s an issue with 3v or if Sky have an issue with excessive prepayment (especially over multiple cards).

I was planning on just buying a few cards a month to cover things like Sky – would be a shame if this route was indeed closed.

I did about £400 to Sky on the 12th and those transactions are not showing as reversed.

    • TimS says:

It happened to me. i “overpaid” by £100 and the payments were reversed on 18th, around a week after they were made.

What dreadful service. How can a supplier just change their mind (or perhaps suddenly decide to enforce an existing rule) without notice?

Visa are not exactly in the same league as payday lenders but they are acting with that level of care. I think that they will be calling a board meeting in January to try to work out why their blooming 3v card business has suddenly collapsed.

3V is nothing to do with Visa. It is issued by Raphael Bank……. They are stopping this because they set the system up wrong and have probably lost a lot of money.

As to why can a supplier enforce a rule. Simply because you already agreed to it. You can ask to Ombudsman to rule if you really feel aggrieved. Don’t be supplied if the NCA investigate you for money laundering though. 3v has all the hallmarks of an illegal layering scheme (even though it is nothing of the sort).

Take my advice – The gravy train has stopped. Time to move on. Go wait for the next one., it’ll likely be along shortly. Have a great Christmas 😉

Issues at EDF also. I paid £50 into my account using 2x 3V cards on Wednesday. Yesterday I had call from two separate customer sevices agents wondering what was going on. I told them I had received 2 visa gift cards that I decided to credit to my account and asked if it was ok. They said yes but then why bother calling me. In the past I creditted over £800 (refunded to my bank) to my account using 3V cards with no hassle. Unfortunately, it looks like game almost over for 3V but I don’t understand why they care? Presumably 3V make their money regardless of how we choose to use them?

    • Zoe says:

No 3V lose money from people like us. When they came up with their business model they had no idea how we would use their cards.

      • Singing Dwarf says:

Yes, their business model relies on x percent of people forgetting about their gift cards and never redeeming them – just like the remainder of the unregulated gift card business.

  • Isolde says:

For those who still have an outlet for 3V cards or shop at Tesco, Amex Offers now include a Tesco “Spend £10 or more and get £5 back”. Limited to 22,000 cards.

    • Andrew (@andrewseftel) says:

      Good spot thanks

    • James67 says:

Thanks for tip. Can I also register mbna amex cards for this?

      • Isolde says:

        James
Sorry – no idea. I suspect not as it was in the personal account section of the AMEX website

    • Alan says:

Thanks for the heads-up 🙂 Signed up for it for my Plat card (World Duty Free £20 off £60 spend too) – seems only for main Amex-issued cards though, no offers showing on my supplementary card and can’t see a way to add non-Amex issued cards. Wish the Android app let you add them!

      • James67 says:

thanks folks, have signed up 3 amex cards for both Tesco and WDF so no complaints 🙂

    • Nick point says:

Do you have a direct link for this? I cannot find it anywhere

      • Nick point says:

Please ignore- I logged into amex and was able to load it on my 2 cards.

Do I need to rush and use it, or have I already secured it as one of the first 22000 to save the offer?

  • Peter says:

6 Sky payments from 18th have been returned. I’ve not checked EDF yet. My Sky account is still a few hundred pounds in credit from previous payments I’v made though.

  • Graeme says:

Two payments on the 15th and two on the 17th are still showing as paid, so fingers crossed and thumbs held for me.

That does only put me in £50 credit though – perhaps it’s accounts with higher balances, or just more recent? Assuming mine don’t get pulled, anyway….

  • Andrew says:

What are the rules regarding the reversal of payments?

If a payment I make to someone clears but is later sent back without my prior authorisation, I would be tempted to regard that as a second, separate, ex-gratia payment. A Christmas bonus, if you will…

(Especially if it’s from a company like Sky)
