Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

Earn up to 10,000 Avios with new hotel booking partner Kaligo

Back in September I reported that hotel booking site Rocketmiles was now partnering with British Airways Executive Club to offer Avios points when you booked a hotel with them.

BA has just launched a new partnership along the same lines with Kaligo (www.kaligo.com).

There is a very generous bonus of 3,000 – 10,000 Avios available with your first hotel booking.

Kaligo British Airways

Kaligo is a Singapore-based company which is already partnering with American Airlines, Air Asia, Asia Miles, Jet Privilege and US Airways Dividend Miles.  The new tie-up with Avios is their first partnership with a European airline.

Kaligo has an inventory of over 300,000 hotels worldwide predominantly in the 3-star to 5-star range.

As with Rocketmiles and Pointshound, the company is effectively rebating part of its commission to you in the form of Avios points.  You can earn up to 20 Avios points per £1 spent which is a very decent earnings rate.

Earn 3,000 – 10,000 Avios with your first booking

To celebrate their new partnership with Avios, Kaligo is offering 3,000 or 10,000 Avios with your first booking.  This is on top of the standard Avios points you would receive from them.

You will receive 3,000 Avios if your first booking is for £999 or less.  Bookings of over £1,000 will receive 10,000 bonus Avios.  If you booked a hotel which paid their highest rate of 20 Avios per £1, you would collect 30,000 Avios from a £1,000 booking.

As I noted when I wrote about Rocketmiles, the key to using third party booking services like Kaligo is to be smart

If you book a chain property, you will not receive points or stay credit in the hotels own loyalty scheme for your stay – although you would usually receive points on your incidental spend.  You may or not receive status benefits – Hilton is very good about giving you status benefits however you book, other chains less so.

You need to do a trade-off between any potential loss of hotel points and status benefits versus the Avios you will receive from Kaligo.  Given their generous 3,000 or 10,000 Avios incentive for your first booking – on top of their standard Avios earning – it seems to be worth giving them a trial.

Here are the rules for the 3,000 – 10,000 bonus Avios promotion:

You must register with Kaligo via this special sign-up page

You must make your first booking by 31 January 2015

Your stay can be for any date although you will not receive the Avios until after your stay

You can only earn the bonus once

I am due to have a chat with the CEO of Kaligo today and hope to run a short interview later in the week.

Not bad. 3800 + 3000 miles for a stay at Grand Hyatt Singapore I just booked. Keep up the good work, Sebastian.

Has anyone managed to actually book a stay with Kaligo? I tried for stays I have next year in Riga and Tallinn but it kept saying there was a technical fault. Even changing credit cards didn’t help.

    • Junyang says:

Hi! Please reach out to me at junyang.ng@kaligo.com and we’ll get that resolved for you right away.

I got a very good deal yesterday for a hotel in Cardiff. Seemed to have problems booking with my first credit card, but worked with a different card and was impressed to find that a tech support human being actually picked up my problems and emailed me an offer of assistance.

      Thanks

Umm, how about recognising the city of Leeds in the UK, rather than just the one in the US?!

  • flieduk says:

How do they decide which earning rate to apply to which property? I am look at the Taj Mahal but it is not showing anything like 20x Avios. Which is a shame really.

    • Sebastian says:

We calculate the earn rate we offer depending on the hotel and dates chosen. There are many factors that can influence this, including occupancy rates and seasonality. If we get access to special or ‘distressed’ room inventory that a hotel is trying to fill, we pass on the savings to customers in the form of even greater rewards.

  • James says:

It would be great if such services displayed the all inclusive price right from the start…I strongly dislike the practice of adding tax after selecting a rate and it will discourage me from booking through Kaligo.

No such trouble with rocketmiles and I happily use their service. It’s also clearer on refundable/non refundable rates.

Change these things and you could have a good thing going on Sebastian.

    • Sebastian says:

Hi James, thanks for alerting us on the tax-exclusive pricing issue. Since it’s customary to include tax in the UK market, we have switched to displaying fully tax inclusive prices for UK-based users effectively immediately.

I’m with you on the improvements we need to make in displaying cancellation policies. Currently, the cancellation policy is clearly displayed on the page where you make your payment, and we are working on being able to display it directly in the search results for greater convenience.

      • James says:

        Hi Sebastian,

Thanks for the reply. I noticed today actually that the default is not tax inclusive. Wow, if only it was thay easy to change something you dislike about every company!

Rates are comparable for my next stay so will give you guys the booking as a way of saying thanks for listening 🙂

  • Dominic says:

Mixed feelings. Just needed to book 2 rooms at the LHR Sofitel for January. Decided to do one with Kaligo, and the other direct (as I’m an Accor Plat). First problem, Kaligo can’t find any hotels available at all at Heathrow for the date. So I put in London and filter it down, and duly book room one for £143. Then go to Accor, and book room two for…..£101. That feels a bad way of earning 3600 avois!

    • Sebastian says:

Hi Dominic, thank you for trying Kaligo, and I’m sorry that we were not able to offer a best-market rate for the LHR Sofitel for your dates. We are trying to balance a very broad selection of hotels with ensuring that there is always ample choice of best-price options.

We’ll be progressively adding a number of new sources for rooms over the coming months, to further increase the range of hotels with best prices and top earn rates of 15-20 Avios per GBP. So do check back before you book your next stay!

  • Sebastian says:

Hi Simon, thanks for giving the site a try. I’m sorry to hear that our price comparison algorithm failed you in this instance. We’re using a metasearch approach (e.g. like Kayak) to compare our rates in real-time against several of the world’s Top 5 hotel booking sites. These benchmark sites give a very strong indication of how Kaligo’s price compares to the market.

In rare cases, other sites outside our comparison set may be running time-limited discounts or special rates. To help address this challenge, we’re working on increasing the number of sites that we compare to so that we can give you an even more reliable indication.
