Back in March, Hilton HHonors launched ‘Double Your HHonors’ which was due to run until the end of May.

Rather than launch a new promotion for the Summer, Hilton has extended it until the end of August.

You need to register to take part if you have not already done so, and this can be done via the Hilton website here.

It is a simple offer:

You will earn EITHER double base points or double airline miles for every Hilton Family stay you make during the promotional period, after registration.

If you select double miles, you need to switch your earnings preference to ‘points and miles’ in your Hilton HHonors account.

You can earn credit for up to two rooms per stay. Existing reservations count.

ALL Hilton Group properties are now taking part in this promotion.  The original list of non-participants has been withdrawn and from June 1st you are guaranteed to receive double points wherever you go.

Which option should I choose?

The standard earnings package is 10 base points per $1 plus either 5 bonus points or 1 bonus airline mile per $1. Some brands – more importantly Hampton – earn less.

However, both Iberia Plus and Virgin Flying Club are exceptions to the ‘1 mile per £1’ rule. Here is the list of Hilton airline partners. You will see that:

British Airways earns 1 Avios point per $1

Iberia Plus earns 15 Avios points per $10 (a better deal)

Virgin Flying Club earns 2 miles per $1

Let’s assume a 0.75p valuation per airline mile and 0.33p valuation per Hilton HHonors point.

Double Points means double base points (20 per $1) plus 5 bonus points per $1. That is total earnings of 25 points per $1 with a value of 8.3p.

Double Miles means single base points (10 per $1) plus 3 Avios in Iberia or 4 miles in Virgin. I would value that at 5.5p per $1 with Avios or 6.3p per $1 with Virgin. With any other airline earning the standard 2 miles per $1 when doubled, the return is even worse at 4.8p per $1.

Double Points wins out.

    Sadly if you chose miles all the way back in March to match the Virgin offer that was on at the same time you’re sadly stuck with them til August.

    Would of been nice to of had a new identical offer so we could reselect.

    I am away to book 2 x single night stays in the Waldorf Astoria Berlin in December via the £50 statement credit for Gold Amex – is this the best way to utilise the offer?

      booked two nights on different cards at £136 a night minus £50 statement credit, so £86 a night seems good for that hotel. All i need now is to activate our free nights on the Hilton cc and book our other two nights with the vouchers! £172 for 4 nights in this hotel seems good value – Thanks Raffles! No breakfast thou but i can handle that!

    Off-topic – are Hilton ever flexible about extending the six months on the free night certificate? If everything conspires against me I’d only need a handful of days.

      The free night certificates are currently being issued with 12 month validity – may be a mistake or it is new policy, although the website still says 6 months.

      One person cancelled a redemption made using the certificate and got points back in return. I am currently sitting on a Park Lane redemption and my confirmation says I paid with 80,000 points instead of a certificate. If you are having trouble using it, you could book an expensive points redemption, cancel it and see if you get points back instead, which you could use at any point.

        I wasn’t concentrating and managed to apply for the cards a few weeks earlier than planned for a trip to Reykjavik, but 12 month validity would make everything lovely again. Fingers crossed!

    Upon review of your HHonors account, we found that you enrolled in Double Miles on March 3, 2015. As you previously enrolled in the initial promotion, we are unable to change you enrollment from miles to points as the promotion from June 1-August 31, 2015 is a continuation of the original promotion that began on March 1, 2015.

    Are they offering that now? Surely it is cheaper to do a Diamond Challenge and check into a 5,000 points per night hotel instead.

    Even without a challenge, it would be cheaper to book a long stay at a 5k per night hotel!

    How can that cost be justified? At 0.33p per HH point you are giving up £2,500 of free nights. There is no way that Diamond is worth that – the only decent benefit is lounge access and not all hotels have that. If you were doing enough nights to justify spending that many points, you would be Diamond anyway!
