Cheap Avios – 500 Clubcard points when you buy 2 HP ink cartridges from Tesco

Judging by a couple of emails I received on Tuesday, Tesco has brought back its occasional offer on HP printer ink cartridges.  This time, it is available both in-store AND via Tesco Direct.

The deal is simple.  You will receive 500 bonus Tesco Clubcard points when you buy two HP printer ink cartridges.  These start at £8 each at the moment.

You can see full details of the offer on Tesco Direct here.

So, lets run some maths.

You buy 2 of the HP 364 Black cartridges for £16

You earn 516 Clubcard points, which gets you 1,238 Avios

This works out at 1.29p per Avios – cheaper than buying Avios points from BA!

This is not the cheapest deal ever.  However, you still have the cartridges.

Let’s assume that you manage to sell the HP 364′s on eBay for £3.50 each, net of all costs, which is probably over-cautious.  Your total cost will have been £9 for 1,238 Avios, which takes you down to 0.73p each.

Note that these cartridges are quite fat and so postage costs are higher than usual, although if you do ‘buy it now’ and say you have six for sale, many customers will buy two or three at once.

Alternatively, you may be able to send some cartridges to Tesco Recycling!  Note that Tesco Recycling has substantially cut back on the range of cartridges accepted as you can see from the list on their site.   You can’t send them HP 364 anymore, for a start.  If you could find a more expensive cartridge that was accepted, you wouldn’t have the trouble of ebaying them.

If you have a Tesco ‘conditional spend’ voucher (eg £5 off £50) to use in-store then this deal becomes even more attractive.  Unfortunately there are no Tesco Direct discount coupons currently running as far as I know.

The closing date is July 30th.  Many stores will NOT have the yellow labels on the shelf advertising this offer, although they should still go through the tills OK.  Alternatively, order via Direct for free in-store collection.  Full details of the offer are here.

  • James says:

The yellow 364s are only £7, I picked up a couple yesterday!

  • Tilly71 says:

Good deal if you needed the inks yourself, resell is not good on these if your thinking this route and many are starting to sell out on groceries site.

  • Tilly71 says:

Also, you can’t send in new ink cartridges to tesco, they have to be used of ink to get points.

    • Rob says:

Has that changed? It was not a problem in the past.

    • Graeme says:

Am I the only one that thinks it’s absurd to use a scheme designed to reduce the waste of resources to engineer the acquisition of cheaper loyalty points by sending in brand new, unused ink cartridges to be recycled…

  • Harry Holden says:

Just made a purchase. HP301 restricted to 10 per transaction though I have not tried another transaction yet.

  • Fenny says:

When I looked on the Direct website last night, the HP cartridges I use were not listed as being part of the promotion.

  • Polly says:

Is anyone getting any conditional spend coupons these days as you mentioned Raffles. We haven’t had one for months!

    • The_Real_A says:

Tesco issued a statement that they were curtailing “deffered savings” and concentrating on discounts at the shelf which is what most customers want.

So i think we may have seen the end of fuelsave and till discounts…

      • Polly says:

Yes I saw that last fuel save spend in end of sept. Shall miss that one…mmmmm.. But there’s always Morrison’s fuel save ongoing, now how do I get around my pay.com card use on that one, and keep earning my avios? Am working on that one right now… Forward planning.

        • The_Real_A says:

I found Morrisons do Amazon vouchers too, which are useful as i can get through quite a bit of spend…

        • mark2 says:

You can buy Morrison’s Gift Cards from HSV who take pay.com.
The snag is only £10 vouchers, so you could join two pay.com vouchers at a cost of £1.75 and buy four so 150 points i.e. 360 Avios for £1.75 which is about 0.5p.
This assumes that you can buy gift cards with a Morrison’s gift voucher!

    • Rob says:

Yes, I had a batch a few weeks ago – but I rarely use them.

      • Reney says:

I got some recently, but they were very high valued e.g £X amount off £90 spends

        • Polly says:

That would be fine combined with pay.com cards. Annoying when I see them flashing out with a previous customer at the till. It may be that I spend a lot with them anyway on gift cards, for everything! That they don’t feel I need any encouragement to shop there!

Rob don’t you use them for gift cards and food purchases?

          • Liz says:

I never get money off vouchers from Tesco because I shop there all the time now but Sainsburys bombards us with money off and bonus nectar points every week!

    • James67 says:

No coupons, no till spits, no nothing for many months fo me, my partner, mum, dad or sister. Something must be going on!

      • YL says:

At the begging of the year I received many weekly discount vouchers through the post, but not a thing in the last 3-4 months!!

  • Reney says:

If anyone has some 3Vs to spend….I ordered some ink and my order was just over £25, so I used a 3V to buy £25 Tesco digital giftcard (Raffles wrote about Tesco doing e giftcard a few weeks back). Wait a few minutes for the card to arrive and activate. Paid the bulk of the order using the tesco giftcard and the rest using another 3v.

    • Waffles1 says:

Was the gift card a 16 digit number? Could you print it out to scan?

  • Dom says:

Don’t understand why 301 black is in the offer but not 301 colour?

    • chris says:

color was in the offer but since tesco has no sold out of them, tho they pather ceaverboxes still has them, tho since the bonus only works on items sold via tescos them selfs the offer does not apply

    • Mike says:

I bought both in store today but they were the XL version
