British Airways Executive Club has announced the first “open to all” transfer bonus from Tesco Clubcard to Avios since, I think, July 2012.

From 1st November – so DO NOT CONVERT TODAY – until 30th November, you will receive a 20% transfer bonus on conversions from Tesco Clubcard into British Airways Executive Club.

Auto-convert members are OK as transfers which were made after 20th October will also receive the bonus.

Tesco Clubcard

There is a cap of £100 on the amount of Tesco vouchers that can be transferred.  You cannot get around this by sending £100 to BA and £100 to avios.com, because avios.com is not participating in this offer.

Full details can be found on the Clubcard website here.

Note that the wording between the site and the rules is not exactly the same.  The site says that you must convert in multiples of £10 to get the bonus.  The small print simply says that you must convert a minimum of £10 – and that once you are above that, you get the bonus on whatever amount you send over up to £100.

This bonus is not entirely unexpected.  I know that the Avios devaluation has impacted the willingness of some people to collect Avios from third parties.  This is purely common sense – if you believe that an Avios point is worth less than it was, other Clubcard redemption options or credit cards begin to look more attractive.

Avios, on the other hand, relies on income from third party issuers of Avios points.  The points issued from British Airways flights are a cost whilst the points issued via third parties are a revenue stream.

The only way to overcome this impact is to offer a transfer bonus which lessens the devaluation.  Where BA has gone wrong here is in capping the transfer at £100 – it was Club World redemption pricing which took the biggest hit, and only being able to transfer £100 of vouchers (28,800 Avios) is not going to make much impact.

Remember that Virgin Atlantic is also offering a 15% conversion bonus.  This is the first time in a long, long time that Virgin has had a poorer offer than BA!

The other thing to bear in mind is that Clubcard Boost returns on Monday, allowing you to get double the face value of your vouchers at Tesco Direct or for certain products in-store.  You should consider if this is a better deal or not.  Avios probably win out – a £10 Clubcard voucher would be worth £20 in Tesco Direct or 2,880 Avios points so you are effectively ‘buying’ Avios at 0.69p which is a good deal.

  • HayMow says:

We have a dual Tesco account so presume hubby & self could convert £100 each to our respective BAEC accounts (albeit in a household account together) by signing in separately??

  • Liz says:

Please note it is from 1st Nov so DON’T convert your vouchers today!

  • Tilly71 says:

Is the limit of £100 conversion per account? We have a family account with two people able to transfer into the account?

  • Jonathan says:

Morning All – OT but wanted to hear people’s feedback on Supercard.

I’ve recently used it in HK and had the card declined but upon returning to my hotel room can on the app the transaction has been charged in GBP.

Looking at previous Supercard articles I don’t think this situation was unique but I can’t see anyone’s discussion of the resolution.

Did you find this subsequently dropped off or were you charged for the transaction? If it’s the latter how good were Supercard at responding to the issue and resolving it?

    Thanks

    • Daniel says:

In my experience it will drop off.

I find that my card seems to get locked some times – only resolution on that one is to use a UK ATM to unlock it, as they can’t do anything remotely.

    • Mikeact says:

Why don’t you get on to them with this question ? Their support is excellent.

      • Jonathan says:

Thanks Michael and yes I did exactly that, emailed them at the same time as posting this message.

I know there were some teething problems with the app and generally that they were a little overwhelmed with demand when the card was first introduced, so was keen to get some feedback from the community here as to whether this is a known issue and is easy to resolve, or not.

    • Mark says:

I had a similar situation where a declined transaction appeared in the app but was never charged to my credit card.

Allows you to directly compare what rate you would have got via the visa route to whatever your alternative payment method got you…

    • Mark says:

On the £100 limit the terms actually say:

      3. Eligible Participants will not receive bonus Avios on transactions over £100.00 in Clubcard Vouchers.

Which can of course be interpreted in many ways. Does it mean you get no bonus at all if you order more the £100 in Avios in one transaction? Can you put through multiple transactions? Or does it mean you get no bonus on any transactions you put through after hitting the £100?

      • Rob says:

Pretty much all of the Avios team read HFP so we can only hope that they see this and we get some clarity on Monday!

    • Mr Dee says:

Hi, I phoned them up after a transaction was declined although it did show up in the app and reduced my cc available limit, I was told it will take upto 15 days I believe to drop off

  • Marcus Ruegg says:

Terms and conditions state that transactions above £100 do not receive the bonus. No reference to multiple transactions of £100 or less?

    • Danny says:

Auto transfered circa 150 pounds worth and no bonus…. not happy ; (

      • Waffles1 says:

I’m the same, I’ve contacted them on twitter to find out more. My other half also auto converted their points – around £15 and got no bonus either.

    • Rob says:

      Hmm. Bad wording or not?

    • Jimmy says:

Who’s going to be brave enough to try multiple transfers of £100 and report back?!?

  • fiona says:

I wouldn’t get too excited unless they have emailed you with the offer.

  • harry says:

How easy is it to change your BAEC details to a different Avios a/c, @ Tesco’s end? They probably won’t be sharp enough to spot it. I’ll give it a go & send some to one of my kids. Won’t know until after 30 November, I guess.

    • James67 says:

Tried something similar with Virgin Harry, switching between FC and CC accounts, changing email and mailing addresses. Nothing worked, when using anything other than original combination of FC and CC details I got a message saying the points could not be transferred. I was a bit surprised

  • Jason says:

Seems a bit misleading to advertise to the 20% bonus on the main BAEC Avios purchase page and then state in the T&Cs it is only valid if you receive the email.

    • Hilly says:

      Autoconverters DO get the bonus.

    • harry says:

I don’t think that’s going to worry many of us here 🙂

If you asked for my guesstimate of the chances of them correlating email recipients against Clubcard members taking up the offer (and knocking out the non-recipients for bonus purposes), I’d say close to zero. Just use Raffles’ link.

    • Rob says:

I very much doubt this is correct. Happy to try a £10 test to see.
