Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

Get £50 cashback when you spend £150 at American Express Travel

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

This very generous offer – £50 cashback on a £150 travel spend – has just been launched for American Express Gold and Platinum cardholders.

To see if you have been targetted, you need to log in to your American Express online account and take a look at the offers on your Gold or Platinum statement page.  Most, if not all, cardholders will see it.

It is restricted to the first 10,000 cardholders to register.

This is a slightly complex promotion and you need to make sure you follow all the steps.

Once logged in to your Amex account you must save the offer to your Amex card.

You need to spend £150 in one transaction on pre-paid flights, hotels, experiences or car hire at americanexpress.co.uk/travel

Non pre-paid products do NOT count

Paying by Paypal, even if you use your Amex card, does not count

You need to make your booking by March 31st but there are no limits on when you fly or stay

Only one statement credit per card (supplementary cards would count separately if they are registered with Amex and the offer can be saved to them)

Apart from that, you can book anything you like.

This promotion would work best when booking a flight because you will still earn airline miles and status credits for flights however they are booked.  It also works fine for car hire and non-chain hotels.

Remember that any chain hotel booked by Amex Travel may not count for points, status benefits or stay credit if it is pre-paid.  Non pre-paid bookings will almost always earn points but those will not count for this offer.

That said, as Amex is a major corporate travel agent I would expect that you have a pretty good chance of getting credit for your stay.   You certainly have more chance than you would if you booked via Expedia.

As the offer runs until March 31st, you have plenty to time to take advantage even if you don’t already have a Gold or Platinum charge card but are willing to apply.  My review of American Express Gold is here and my review of American Express Platinum is here.

Very OT but does anyone know if there is a daily limit for ordering currency on Amex Travel Money Now using BAPP?

    • Rob says:

Yes, your total cash limit printed on your statement – usually 20 per cent of credit limit.

  • ts77 says:

Thanks for this Rob, I’ve been holding out buying flights within SEA, this is perfect timing for me.

  • PaulR says:

Does anyone know if you HAVE to book this through the website or can you call up and book?

Another question is, how do you identify pre-paid hotel rates on the website? Is there any easier way than having to click through each and every listing. I’ve been clicking away for 20 mins or so and now I’m so bored I’m going to going to talk to my family instead…..

    • FormalHall says:

I would be curious to know this too; there are lots of fare classes which the Amex website doesn’t show but should be bookable over the phone. Anyone have experience from past promotions?

  • Simon says:

Pardon my ignorance but how do I register a supplementary card for this, or any othercash back offer?

    • harry says:

Easy as pie if you have the supp holder compliant & ready to hold the phone 🙂

Just an online process that may need telephone intervention, look up Amex card registration

      • harry says:

oh sorry – then once the card is registered – look for ‘My Offers’ etc

        • Simon says:

After all these years I never realised that a supplimentary card holder can have an online account too! I will try that. Thanks 🙂

  • Fenny says:

Might see if I can combine it with the Eurostar offer and have a weekend in Paris.

  • Alan says:

Interesting, didn’t know they had that. Not massively useful though given they say “Your claim must be submitted prior to cancellation and/or change fees coming into effect per the hotel’s policies specific to the room you booked on amextravel.com.” – they go on to explicitly stated (as this text implies) that prepaid rooms are therefore excluded. Given this the only time their policy applies you could always book elsewhere and cancel the Amex Travel booking anyway so it’s not really that great a benefit.

Ok, I want to book a Hilton hotel in London for October using this offer. Unfortunately it is slightly under £150 but I think I can bump it up by adding a cheap ‘experience’. However, what are people’s views on whether or not they would honour the free breakfast as a Gold member?

    Many thanks.

    • ankomonkey says:

I got free breakfast and room upgrade at a Hilton in Japan booked through Amex Travel on one of these offers. I didn’t get any points for the stay, however…

    • Danksy says:

Maybe send an email asking them (Amex) before you book?

  • Tom says:

Flights seem to be coming out surprisingly expensive.. looking at Aer Lingus flights from BRS only to find they are over 2x the cost of booking direct or via other aggregators.. hmm.

    • plastikman says:

booked BA flight that was exactly the same fare as the BA website.

      • harry says:

Not exactly. You didn’t pay £5 booking fee per person, I take it.

        Amex Travel is therefore cheaper.

        • kirill says:

Choose Ukraine as the billing country and you do not need to pay the £5 fee,
