Available NOW – instant status match from Marriott to Starwood or vice versa

The merger of the Marriott and Starwood hotel groups completed this morning.  It creates the largest hotel company in the world with a – frankly crazy – rota of 30 brands and 5,700 properties.

Some details of how the merger of Marriott Rewards and Starwood Preferred Guest will work have been revealed.  The key point is that you can status match immediately from Marriott to Starwood or vice versa.  You can also transfer points back and forth.

You can claim your status match via this page but do keep reading first.

SPG Starwood

This is a MAJOR win for Starwood Preferred Guest Gold members.  Starwood Gold doesn’t get you much, to be honest, but you will now be Marriott Gold.  This gets you guaranteed lounge access at most brands, which includes free lounge breakfast.  The full list of Marriott Platinum, Gold and Silver benefits are here.

As I revealed yesterday, the transfer ratio between Starwood and Marriott points is 1:3.  This is as good as you could realistically hope for.

If you are a Marriott Rewards member:

You can now get your hands on some of the great SPG Moments redemptions, such as the latest list of concerts at the O2 I highlighted yesterday

You have access to the 30+ airlines who are Starwood transfer partners, a far bigger range than Marriott Rewards offers

You have access to a far wider range of upmarket hotel redemptions than Marriott ever offered

If you are a Starwood Preferred Guest member:

You have access to some good value redemptions.  The most expensive Marriott hotels, excluding Ritz-Carlton, are 45,000 points.  This includes places like the JW Marriott in Venice where I was recently (review) and which lets you upgrade a reward night to a Junior Suite for just €110 extra.  Using 15,000 Starwood Preferred Guest points for such a hotel is a fantastic deal.

Similarly, the Grosvenor House on Park Lane in London, at 45,000 points, is a steal if you are using Starwood points.  It makes the higher end SPG redemptions like the Park Tower look terrible value.

You can now access Marriott Travel Package rewards.  These are EXCELLENT value and – using SPG points – are bordering on fantastic for people with large SPG balances.  I will write a separate article on this over the weekend for the benefit of SPG members who are not familiar with them.

The first thing to do is get your status matched

You need to go to this page on the Marriott website.

At the top of the page is a button called ‘Link Your Account’.  In my case, I was matching my Starwood Gold (free with American Express Platinum) to Marriott Gold.

My Marriott status was upgraded instantly to Gold.

I will write more on the merger and what it means for you over the next few days, but you can start now by matching your Starwood status to Marriott, or vice versa.  If you don’t have an account with the other programme, you can do it during the matching process.

Ignore any references to Ritz-Carlton Rewards – you are better off with Marriott Rewards and, if necessary, can switch later anyway.

  • Ed says:

Any indication of how long the transferred status will last. If someone signed up for Amex plat to obtain spg gold, how long would Marriott status last?

    • Rob says:

Probably end 2017. Your SPG Gold will last that long even if you cancel Amex so in worse case scenario rematch in January.

Best guess you will be set a target across both schemes to reach to retain status for 2018.

    • George says:

The FAQ clearly states that status works concurrently. So if you are currently SPG Gold and you match now with Marriott, but lose SPG Gold and go down to basic in February, you’ll also drop with Marriott

  • Simon says:

    Thanks for the update.
Any predictions as to when the SPG Amex will get pulled for new applications?

  • Scallder says:

Just tried matching SPG Gold after signing up to Marriott Rewards and it just came up with an error 🙁

  • Oh! Matron! says:

Completely painless, both transferring points and status matching due to Plat amex SPG gold

Had 6000 points languishing in marriott with no way to get them out, so happily transferred somewhere useful now 🙂

    • xcalx says:

I had 10,079 Marriott that were due to expire on the 31 August. I transferred 10,000 to BA for 2,000 Avios to not lose them. Signed in today to match to SPG and noticed that 79 Marriott points were still there, Gutted could have waited and moved to SPG then on to AA.

  • KF says:

Thanks Raffles for the early heads up. The recommended link was seamless and my Marriott silver status was immediately upgraded to gold which is a great result as I have an upcoming reservation at the West Quay Marriott in Canary Wharf before a flight from LCY to JFK. I can now access the lounge the evening of arrival and grab a free breakfast before heading out the next morning. Thanks again.

  • FIRSTclstraveller says:

Any chance of a status match from Hilton Gold to Marriott Gold?!

    • Toby says:

I was going to ask a similar question.

I have Hilton Gold from Amex Plat but I plan to cancel the amex soon. Are there any status matches I can take advantage of before I do this? Also, do I lose the hilton gold at same time as my amex is cancelled or does it run for a certain period regardless of cancellation?

      Thanks

      • Brian says:

Uh, if you have Amex Plat, then you can get SPG Gold – which will status match to Marriott Gold as per the article!!

  • N says:

    Excellent.

  • CV3V says:

Off topic, but it seems my Spire status has ran into its next year – i was just able to choose my Spire benefit again and took another 25,000 points for free.

    • marly says:

Same happened to me last year, maybe because we attained Spire for only a few months left in the year and not an actual entire year, they gave us 18m status instead on 12m…Good for us!

      • CV3V says:

I got status last year, and 25,000 points. 12 months on and another 25,000 points offered. Also, check your status expiration – mine lasts until Dec 2017 as Spire, and i have hardly stayed with IHG this year.

        • James67 says:

I’m curious why yours lasted until end of 2017. I got mine November 15 but ends 31/12/16

          • Liz says:

I got spire last year and got a card to 2016 plus 25000 spire bonus – then earlier this year I got another card in the post for 2017 but didn’t get the spire pts again so not clear as to when my spire was going to expire. I have just put through a large payment on my IHG card which will tip me over the 75k qualifying pts so I should get another 25k bonus now.

          • James67 says:

I’ll check if anything changes on anniversary of my spire. I’ve only stayed with IHG once this year as I’ve returned to hilton. Akso struggling to use my 200k IHG points as it’s difficult to get comparative value from them, I jst keep hokding them too in hope of a great pointsbreak, Failing that I probably end up using them at Wembkey or an IC uf I can get £1k value from them I hope your American road trip went well.

          • CV3V says:

Yeah i got Spire status about Oct 2015, and took the 25,000 points. Earlier in the year i noticed the validity had changed from end of 2016 to 2017, i have only done 10 nights with IHG this year. So when i checked the Spire My Benefits section the 25,000 points or gift Platinum status to a friend was there again (i took the points).

Likewise, i have been trying to max my stays at Hilton with Diamond status which has never disappointed.

I think a new points break list is due in October. Decided to blow my IHB points on IC stays in Saigon and Nha Trang at new year.

          • Roger says:

I am platinum elite thanks to IHG premium card.
How do I obtain Spire status with lowest spend with IHG?

          • Rob says:

Get 75,000 Virgin Atlantic miles (25,000 for getting their own Black credit for £140, perhaps 35,000 for Amex Plat via a referral, then 15k via Tesco) and transfer all 75k to IHG. The points are elite qualifying so you get Spire plus 75k IHG points.

Best doing this in January though to get yourself 2 years of status.

          • James67 says:

I wonder if you maintained it for staying the 10 nigets, did it change after your 10th stay? If I click on maintain status it says maintain your elite status after 10 nights but I didn’t believe this meant spire.

          • Liz says:

My date still says Dec 2016 even though I have a card saying 2017 – think I got Spire around this time last year so will check to see if the 25k pts appear again soon though I doubt it. So if I’ve hit Spire now again will that get me Spire to the end of 2017 or 2018?

James – we had another great trip – used 300k of IHG pts for 12 of our nights across 3 hotels – got upgraded to suites on 2. Had 2 nights in Hiltons with no upgrades for being Diamond. FAb holiday again – 8 states ticked off our list.

          • James67 says:

@Liz, it is difficult to get hh diamond upgrades in the States simply because of the vast number of elite members. Glad, but not surprised, to hear you enjoyed your trip.
