Available NOW – instant status match from Marriott to Starwood or vice versa

The merger of the Marriott and Starwood hotel groups completed this morning.  It creates the largest hotel company in the world with a – frankly crazy – rota of 30 brands and 5,700 properties.

Some details of how the merger of Marriott Rewards and Starwood Preferred Guest will work have been revealed.  The key point is that you can status match immediately from Marriott to Starwood or vice versa.  You can also transfer points back and forth.

You can claim your status match via this page but do keep reading first.

SPG Starwood

This is a MAJOR win for Starwood Preferred Guest Gold members.  Starwood Gold doesn’t get you much, to be honest, but you will now be Marriott Gold.  This gets you guaranteed lounge access at most brands, which includes free lounge breakfast.  The full list of Marriott Platinum, Gold and Silver benefits are here.

As I revealed yesterday, the transfer ratio between Starwood and Marriott points is 1:3.  This is as good as you could realistically hope for.

If you are a Marriott Rewards member:

You can now get your hands on some of the great SPG Moments redemptions, such as the latest list of concerts at the O2 I highlighted yesterday

You have access to the 30+ airlines who are Starwood transfer partners, a far bigger range than Marriott Rewards offers

You have access to a far wider range of upmarket hotel redemptions than Marriott ever offered

If you are a Starwood Preferred Guest member:

You have access to some good value redemptions.  The most expensive Marriott hotels, excluding Ritz-Carlton, are 45,000 points.  This includes places like the JW Marriott in Venice where I was recently (review) and which lets you upgrade a reward night to a Junior Suite for just €110 extra.  Using 15,000 Starwood Preferred Guest points for such a hotel is a fantastic deal.

Similarly, the Grosvenor House on Park Lane in London, at 45,000 points, is a steal if you are using Starwood points.  It makes the higher end SPG redemptions like the Park Tower look terrible value.

You can now access Marriott Travel Package rewards.  These are EXCELLENT value and – using SPG points – are bordering on fantastic for people with large SPG balances.  I will write a separate article on this over the weekend for the benefit of SPG members who are not familiar with them.

The first thing to do is get your status matched

You need to go to this page on the Marriott website.

At the top of the page is a button called ‘Link Your Account’.  In my case, I was matching my Starwood Gold (free with American Express Platinum) to Marriott Gold.

My Marriott status was upgraded instantly to Gold.

I will write more on the merger and what it means for you over the next few days, but you can start now by matching your Starwood status to Marriott, or vice versa.  If you don’t have an account with the other programme, you can do it during the matching process.

Ignore any references to Ritz-Carlton Rewards – you are better off with Marriott Rewards and, if necessary, can switch later anyway.

I already have SPG Gold via Amex Plat but it expires Feb 2017. Does anyone know if I request it again via Amex Plat ,whether my expiry date will be extended? Thanks.

    • Scallder says:

I’m the exact same with end date and I tried it again in June and it hasn’t changed it. Was planning on taking out another Platinum card in the new year but as I have some Star wood stays in April next year already booked I might wait until March to sign up and then re-do it. If anyone knows of a way to extend it, would likewise love to know!

  • stuart says:

I’m in the market for new card having completed all my signup targets. Is it worth applying for SPG amex off the back of this?

    • Michael says:

Same question. I think I have a choice of SPG or Nectar Amex (possibly Virgin through it’d take forever to build the points for a redemption so I’m wavering there). I do shop at Sainsbury’s so would use the points if I got them, done BA and Gold. What’s the collective advice on best next choice?

      • Johnnycl says:

Check your emails for the Nectar one, I had a bonus offer of 30,000 points (£150) for taking one out the other week.

I’ve also just taken out the Virgin White again…despite having never flown with them I’ve been able to accrue c. 35,000 miles over the last year just with the few bits and pieces on this site. For me I’m looking forward to having flexibility alongside just BA.

        • harry says:

the only thing that keeps me going is the ?knowledge that Virgin don’t allow churning

          not much, in any case

so the fact I ignored Virgin mostly for 15 years – despite having 100K in the bank – is irrelevant

credit cards & sign-up bonuses are just one-ers

          • Genghis says:

There have been recent reports on here about people getting the Virgin sign up bonuses again. Not tried myself.

          • Johnnycl says:

I’m trying now, cards arrived yesterday and has been a gap of about two statement cycles since I last cancelled. Will report back on if the bonus posts or not…

  • Pauline Peddie says:

Will Marriott Gold entitle me to access to club at a Ritz Carlton?

    • North says:

Very unlikely. Even Marriott Platinum doesn’t usually get that at Ritz Carlton.

  • Fenny says:

Another successful link from SPG Gold to Marriot gold. Just a shame I only have 449 SPG points, so can’t transfer them.

  • What's the Point says:

Thanks for posting Raffles, I am now Gold in the Marriott chain. Free breakfasts ahoy!

  • Rob says:

Marriott Plat to SPG Plat – instantly. Astonishing choice of hotels…Need some tips, Rob…

  • Kurt says:

Just saw Arne Sorenson on CNN. It seems like they will maintain all 30 brands Satwoods & Marriott combined, and expect a totally 85m members after the merger.

  • Michael Birchall says:

Raffles – I need to join Marriott Rewards – do you still do referrals that give extra points to start???

    • Rob says:

You get 2,000 points on your first 5 stays, will trigger you a referral email.

      • Ryan says:

I’ll take a Marriott referall email too if their is one going Raffles…

      • James says:

Can I get one too please Rob ?

Not been a member of SPG or Marriott before but do have Amex Plat so am liking the idea of those Marriott Gold benefits by taking out the SPG gold membership from Amex.

Ooh, is there a referral bonus (or any other bonus) available for SPG signup too ?

        🙂
