Even more things you need to know about the BA Amex 2-4-1 voucher

Yesterday I ran a long article entitled ‘Everything you need to know about the BA Amex 2-4-1 voucher’ which attracted a lot of feedback.

Looking at the comments during the day, it was quite clear that it was NOT everything you needed to know.

I updated the article during the day but if you read Head for Points by email or only saw the article in the morning then you would have missed the additions.

BA Premium Plus American Express card BAPP

Here are some of the additional comments asked by readers, together with my replies:

Are there any easy ways of reducing the taxes payable?

Not easily, because you must start a 2-4-1 journey in the UK and thus incur Air Passenger Duty.  There are two options though:

Start your trip in Jersey, because Jersey is outside the UK for APD purposes but inside the UK for 2-4-1 purposes.  If you fly Jersey – Gatwick – Heathrow – XXXXX your taxes charge will be a lot lower.  You cannot stopover in London for more than 24 hours or full APD is charged regardless.

Start your trip in Inverness.  There is no APD out of Inverness.

There is also no APD out of Newquay but as BA does not fly there this does not help you.  On a standard (non-241) Avios redemption, flying Newquay – Gatwick (Flybe) – XXXXX (BA) would avoid APD.

What small print do I need to know?

I added the following:

There are no circumstances under which you can ask BA to extend a 241 voucher.  Don’t waste your time.

You cannot use ‘part pay with Avios’ in conjunction with a 2-4-1 voucher.  Your booking must be ‘100% Avios’.

‘Gold Upgrade For Two’ vouchers (issued when you earn 2,500 tier points) can be used in conjunction with a 2-4-1 voucher.

You will not earn Avios or tier points on your redemption flight in line with standard Avios redemptions.

Your flights will not be cancelled if you cancel your BA Amex card after making your 2-4-1 booking.

You can fly a different class on the outbound to the return.  However, both passengers must travel together in the same class.  You cannot fly in First and book your companion in Club World if there is only 1 First reward seat available.

BA Amex 241 companion voucher

Can I travel with an infant or book without my baby being born yet?

Ye.  For infant (under 2) bookings you pay 10% of the Avios and 10% of the taxes of an adult passenger.  This can be booked online.

If your child is not yet born, book for the two adults and then call to add the baby when it has arrived and has a name!  These rules apply to standard Avios redemptions as well.

If I cancel my BA Amex card after earning the voucher, is it lost?

No.  It is not clear if you would lose the voucher if you booked a redemption and then cancelled it – would the voucher be reissued if you no longer had a BA Amex?  A recent HFP reader who did this found his voucher was returned.

If I downgrade from the Premium Plus to the free card after earning my voucher, do I retain the 2-year expiry period?

Yes.

Can I change my class of travel if seats open up in a higher class after I’ve booked?

Yes.  Standard Avios change fees apply of £35 per person, plus of course the additional Avios.  You need to call BA to do this because of the 2-4-1 voucher being involved.

Conclusion

As I wrote yesterday, there are still two weeks left to apply for the British Airways American Express cards before the sign-up bonuses drop.  If the idea of earning a companion voucher appeals, this is as good a time as any to apply.

The bonus on the free card is increased from 3,000 Avios to 9,000 Avios points.  £1,000 of spending within three months is required.  The application form is here.

The bonus on the Premium Plus is increased from 18,000 Avios to 25,000 Avios points.  £3,000 of spending within three months is required.  The application form is here.

If you have any further questions about the voucher, please ask them in the comments.

  • Neil P says:

Would it be possible to use multiple vouchers (but not two 2-4-1 vouchers on the booking?

I’ve recently got the lloyds avios card that has the upgrade voucher after spending 7k. I currently have one 2-4-1 voucher (expires in September 2018), so I was planning to use it for our summer holiday next year, possibly to the US or the Caribbean. My plan was to book in July/august this year for next summer.

Can I use the 2-4-1 for club world, purchase a world traveller ticket with avios (upgrade using the Lloyds voucher) and buy a further club world ticket either with cash or avios.

I note the comment about only 2 CW seats available at a time for rewards. Does this affect the lloyds upgrade voucher?

    • Alan says:

If there’s availability then you could get 4 seats that way, although it would be on 3 separate booking references (2 in 241, then sep Lloyds and cash tickets).

They only guarantee 2 CW per flight, but it doesn’t mean more won’t appear. Vouchers have no effect/benefits – you still need the availability in the cabin you want to travel in.

      • Neil P says:

Great, thanks. I assumed it would be possible: my only concern when making the separate bookings is missing out on seats if the route is popular. Although it would be nice to for my wife and I to be stuck in Club world whilst the kids are stranded in World traveller, but practically it would be a nightmare!

Final question: do my children need to be added to my BA household account to use avios for bookings?

        • Rob says:

Not if you don’t have a Household Account, no.

          • Alan says:

and if you do, but don’t want to add them to it then they can go on the F&F list 🙂

          • Neil P says:

I do currently have a household account, as my wife has just over 10k in avios and I thought I might be able to utilize them if we didn’t have enough for any bookings we wanted to make. Should I get rid of the household account then?

Rather daft that to add kids they need an email address, but setting up email addresses for children under 13 is a bit of a faff

          • Alan says:

Ahh – if you’d grabbed familysurname.com then you could have any number before the @ sign (including nanny@ 😉 )

          • Alan says:

Haha – well I was going to suggest Raffles.com but I suspect the existing owners might ask for rather a lot to give that one up… 😉

        • Alan says:

The BA website normally tells you if there’s only 2, 3, 4 seats etc left so that should help guide you. For simple 241 and Lloyds bookings you can do them all online.

  • rams1981 says:

OT my referral from Amex gold to SPG which got my wife 9,000 points. I also received 11,000 SPG points for spending £1000 rather than the standard 10,000.

    • Lawro says:

That would be because you were ‘referred’ by an existing cardholder-or weren’t in this case!

      • rams1981 says:

        🙂

Just pointing out it’s business as usual

        • roberto says:

My wife referred me Plat to SPG following comments last week, I had a email to say that the SPG was accepted but no referal points this far although not had the card yet either.

          Will update as and when.

        • Lawro says:

Indeed, I’d heard similar reports but never wanted to waste a referral (not give it to a friend) /application trying it in case it didn’t work

    • Louise says:

How quick did the referral points post?

  • QAbout241 says:

I’m the head of a household account. My wife’s a member of the household with a 241 attached to her account. I’ve used all of my vouchers. Is the full household balance available for use with her voucher? Who can make a booking? Thanks!

    • the real harry1 says:

the full household balance is available for all bookings – she needs to travel on the 241 booking

    • Alan says:

Yes, being head of HHA is only relevant for sorting membership. When it comes to redemptions anyone can make them – that’s why you need to be careful who you have in your HHA vs F&F list.

The booking will need to be made out of her account as the voucher is in her name, but the Avios will be taken pro-rata from all HHA members based on the relative size of their Avios balance.

    • Rob says:

Either can book, balance available to all

  • Chris Morley says:

Just booked my 2-4-1 CW LGW to Lima for Dec17, not exactly what I wanted as I was trying to get to Santiago but the LHR > SAN availability went within minutes, however I can do an avios redemption on LAN from Lima > Chile, and on a 787! Have done a few more searches on using avios in South America and was surprised how much availability there is.

Can I request an article on the Lloyds Avios scheme as I have the voucher and would like to know the best way to spend it.

  • Mark says:

O/T have any pics been released of the new BA lounge at LGW South Terminal?

    • Rob says:

I am onto this 🙂 Stay tuned tomorrow.

      • Mark says:

Wondered if that might be the case! The first time I took my wife to the old terraces lounge in the North terminal she said it was like being in a school canteen so whatever they do will hopefully be an improvement!

      • Anon says:

Nice one, we’re there next month enroute to the CMR! 🙂

  • Neil says:

    Hello,
I have an Amex black card earning Avios. My wife has a second card on the same account.
If she applied for the blue 9000 Avios in her own name would she be eligible for the 9000 Avios reward ?

    • Alan says:

Yes – additional cards don’t count for the purposes of being treated as a ‘cardholder’ for bonus eligibility

    • Jerry says:

Don’t forget to refer her using refer a friend to get a bonus yourself.

  • Pablo says:

The Jersey/Inverness route is very interesting although somewhat inconvenient..

Is there any way of ‘skipping’ the initial Jersey/Inverness to London leg and joining the ‘connecting’ flight from London onwards and thus avoiding the APD? This would be a game changer!

    • Genghis says:

      No

    • Alan says:

Zero chance whatsoever – everyone would be doing it if there was!
Miss any flight in a booking and all subsequent flights will be cancelled – so not a good idea…

  • the real harry1 says:

Raffles any APD mileage in this?

Passengers will now be able to jet across the pond from Cornwall Airport Newquay from just £229 each way.

Aer Lingus has announced that from March 2017 passengers will be able to fly to North America and Canada (via Dublin) with fares including a checked-through bag, meals, in-flight entertainment and more.

Destinations now bookable include New York, Boston, Hartford and Chicago, with Toronto on sale from January.

When passengers fly from Cornwall Airport Newquay with Aer Lingus Regional they can also complete U.S. Immigration pre-clearance in Dublin before boarding connecting flights, saving time and hassle when arriving stateside.

It comes in the same week that a Government report threw cold water over the possibility of comercial flights flying from Plymouth’s closed airport ever again.

Al Titterington, managing director at Cornwall Airport Newquay, said: “Expanding our route network through cost effective, indirect routes further enhances the destination options available to those wishing to fly from Cornwall and the added bonus of the Immigration pre-clearance in Dublin will be of real benefit to passengers using this route to access North America.

“The routes also increase the number of overseas markets that can reach Cornwall with ease, helping to further support the tourism sector and economy of Cornwall.”
Anouncing the new flights, from Amy Smith, from Cornwall Airport Newquay, Jackie and Juan, from Aer Lingus Regional, and Richard Thomasson, of Cornwall Airport Newquay.
Martin Saxton, chief commercial officer at Stobart Air (operator of Aer Lingus Regional), said: “We are pleased to be able to connect Cornwall based customers to Aer Lingus’s main line trans-Atlantic services via Dublin.

“With four flights weekly between Cornwall and Dublin currently and up to seven flights weekly during summer months, Aer Lingus Regional passengers can now do pre-clearance in Dublin before flying to US and Canadian cities such as New York, Boston, Chicago and Toronto. This service is designed to save time and hassle for Cornwall passengers on their transatlantic travel and offer them an affordable, time efficient and convenient route to the US, be that for business or pleasure.”

    • the real harry1 says:

sorry meant any APD & Avios redemption mileage in this?

idea being it’s easy enough for people to motor down to Cornwall for a day/ couple of days, completely unstressful vs ex-EU, then get their APD-free redemption flight to NA

      • the real harry1 says:

I suppose the saving is only the APD UK—>Dublin 🙁

        • Alan says:

Although if you can do it all on one ticket then it means you’ve got the benefit of a protected connection and no long-haul APD…

    • Nate1309 says:

I would also be interested in the outcome of this. NQY is 5 mins from my parents. I was completely unaware that there was no APD. Every day is a school day here on HFP!
