News in brief:

More on the BA Amex London events

Yesterday we mentioned a series of events being held in January to promote the British Airways American Express card with all attendees receiving 5000 Avios and a free BA First Class washbag.

It turns out the information we were given was only partially correct.  Two of the events – the film screening and the travel photography masterclass – are already booked up.

The third event – the cookery masterclass – is on Saturday 27th January in London over three sessions.  Places are being allocated via a free draw which you can enter via this page here.  The closing date is 22nd January.

There is no mention of the freebies you get for attending, but you will get them.

Zurich SWISS deal

SWISS special – £199 return to Zurich

SWISS is offering a special business class fare of £199 between Heathrow and Zurich.  I will be flying this myself in two weeks so I will be able to report back on how it was, hopefully before the offer ends.

You need to book by 14th February for travel before 31st December 2018.

If you visit this special page of the SWISS website you will see a calendar which shows at a glance which days are available at this price.  Availability looks very good to be honest.

Remember that SWISS uses Terminal 2 at Heathrow and you will be able to access the Lufthansa lounge – or, if you’re willing to walk over to the satellite terminal, the fantastic United Club lounge (or the less fantastic Singapore Airlines and Air Canada lounges).

Qatar Airways sale extended

Qatar Airways has extended its ‘World Travel Boutique’ sale for another three days until 19th January.

Whilst this is convenient for readers, who get another chance to snap up a deal, it is annoying for us after we gave up some space on Monday to remind readers they had to book immediately.

My main article on the best deals available is here.  Read this before trying to book as it contains advice on the best aircraft types and starting cities.  I will do a summary again on the 19th.

  1. O/T – flying Qatar business in a few months with a baby (who’s taken around 20 flights already and is well behaved, before any Daily Mail readers feel the need to comment). Flights are on an A330-200, A330-300, A380-800 and 787-8 Dreamliner respectively. BA have always previously put us at the front of cabin with a bed/hammock for baby to sleep. Does anyone have any experience of Qatar’s approach, suggestions on best seat(s) and/or whether it’s worthwhile contacting them in advance? I seem to recall suggestions the customer service isn’t particularly great.

    • You can call up the local QR office and request bassinet seats for your flight. Bassinets are located in 10A and 10K on the A380. I believe they are on row 1 for the 787 and the A330.

I wouldn’t wait until check-in, so call ahead and request. I typically get reasonable service from the London office when I call them – but that is the dedicated plat line.

  2. off-topic re Hilton visa. I had a Hilton visa which I had held for many years and cancelled just over 6 months ago. I was going to apply for another Hilton Visa, but noted that the terms and conditions say that the free night certificate is only valid for first time applicants. Seems pretty clearly worded and puts me in doubt as to whether I would be given the free night certificate if I applied.

Has anyone got any recent experience of being successful in getting the free night voucher even through they had recently had a previous Hilton Visa card. i’ll probably only re-apply if I stand a reasonable chance of obtaining the free night certificate.

OT: I’ve passed my first anniversary (5th Jan) with the IHG Premium Credit Card and have spent the required amount to trigger the free night certificate. My Creation Finance Account also confirms that the certificate is due. Does anybody know where/when I’ll find it. Will a code be uploaded to my Creation Finance account or will it be loaded to my IHG Rewards Account?

    • Genghis says:

Just after the statement date (24th or so of the month) it should appear in your IHG account. You should also receive an email at the time.

  4. OT/ HIlton.
How often do the offers come round on buying points? – Looking at a property that is 70,000 points a night at a cash value of $599

I see in the past there have been various 50%, extra 50% points , 100% points, etc etc

  5. OT: some good news on a380

    • Yes, I like the plane and welcome its longevity but I fear it is too long in the tooth now to attract another sponsor and the ultra large, 4 engine model seems somewhat out of sorts in a world of retrenching benefits, save for Qatar perhaps.

I personally doubt we will see the expansion of business class space and comfort but I think a greater distinction might be made between first and business.

  6. O/T: Tesco x4 now still valid til June, email sent out…

We recently contacted you to let you know about changes we’re making to the value of Clubcard vouchers used with our Reward Partners.

For a while now, customers have told us they want a simpler way to get the most value from their points.

So, to make it more straightforward to use, we will be offering customers 3x the value of their vouchers with over 100 Clubcard Reward Partners (rather than offering 2x value for some Reward Partners and 4x for others). This is part of a series of changes we’re making to Clubcard to help make it simpler. This includes the ability to increase the value of your Clubcard vouchers with some of our Reward Partners from as little as 50p.

Over the last few days, we’ve listened to feedback from our customers who said they want more time to adjust to these changes, so we’ve delayed them until 10 June 2018. Which means you can still redeem your vouchers at 4x their value until then at tesco.com/clubcard/boost.

If you have any questions about the changes, you can find out more here or you can contact our Customer Engagement Centre on 0800 591 688.

Thank you for shopping at Tesco.

OT due to check in for my 2 for 1 flight home with BA from Johannesburg and can’t check in and says go to airport. I assume this is the warning sign for being selected for a downgrade. What’s my best approach if this does happen?

    • Check availability on later flights, ensure that the voucher holder is downgraded and not the companion (no compo for them without a court case), do not sign the standard BA doc which implies you are giving up your right to compensation (which is illegal).

    • Interested to know what the outcome of this is!

    • rams1981 says:

Update – got to airport early. Went to check in desk and my ticket was ticketed. Weird as I was BA silver and had pre selected seats. Went to BA sales desk who called head office I think who confirmed it should be ticketed and in the end all good. Thankfully.

I wonder if it was related to being done as 2 separate booking initially and I cancelled the return and added it to the 2 for 1 to secure seats.

  8. Sorry OT:

Just about to cancel platinum after latest churn (managed 130,000MR this time). I am going to downgrade to gold. I have never had Gold before, will I be charged annual fee the first year? I mainly just want to keep my MR alive to give me options.

    Thanks
