British Airways announces the new First Class bus

You know the yellow ‘Priority’ tags that British Airways puts on your suitcases when you travel in First Class, Club World or Club Europe?  They don’t do anything.  Nothing.

British Airways has at least now come clean about this, with the launch of a new ‘First for First’ service.

Here are two new services which are being trialled – so don’t get too carried away – at Heathrow:

A dedicated bus for First Class passengers landing on a remote stand

9% of British Airways flights land on remote stands at Heathrow and require a bus transfer to the terminal.

A dedicated First Class bus will now be waiting for long-haul flights.  Other passengers will be blocked from leaving the aircraft until First Class passengers have been driven away.  BA estimates that this will save 10 minutes.

It will NOT be the bus below, which is the bus that Emirates uses for First Class passengers.

Emirates shuttle

I have also reviewed the Qatar Airways first class bus (!).  I doubt it will look like that either ….

Priority baggage handling for First Class passengers

Yes, BA will genuinely be offering priority baggage services to First Class passengers.

Obviously this comes with caveats:

It is only a trial

It only applies for flights from New York JFK, Los Angeles, Dubai and Johannesburg into Heathrow

First Class bags will all be placed in the same container which will be loaded last.  This means that it will be the first container unloaded after landing.  An area will be cordoned off next to the luggage belt and the First Class bags lifted off by a staff member and placed there for collection.

This is clearly beyond the scope of the baggage handlers at Heathrow so it won’t be happening on your outbound flight.

We shouldn’t be too cynical, of course, as positive change is generally the result of many small incremental steps instead of one ‘big bang’ event.  BA does tend to take very small steps though …..

  • Genghis says:

Coming back from JNB into LHR in Feb I saw something I’d never seen before: a cordoned off bit next to the luggage belt where the First Class bags were waiting. How long had this been happening? (rarely see a luggage belt as normally HBO).

    • Tom Cook says:

TBF we flew F back at xmas and our bags were in said cordoned off area way before anyone else. Straight off, bags picked up, walked straight out!

    • Adam says:

When I came back from Dubai in F last August our bags where also waiting and the rest of the luggage hadn’t come out yet.

      • John says:

We flew BA First to Dubai last week and waited quite some time by the carousel for our bags, only to find that they had already been placed in a seperate area at the side. This was an unexpected, but very welcome surprise. BA – bring it on!

  • Maciek says:

I travelled from SFO via JFK yesterday in J connecting to BA F and despite hearing about this new development my expectations (based on prior experiences) were low. To my big surprise my luggage was among the first suitcases on the carousel. Having said that, I don’t see 35 minute wait time as reasonable.

  • Yuff says:

I was on a full flight from PVG yesterday, in F, and my bag was one of the first bags on to the carousel.
I have to say it is a rarity, if my bag has a priority label, that it isn’t one if the first bags to arrive,

    • Lady London says:

+1 Have found there does seem to have been some Priority effect, on landing at a couple of outstations recenlty.

  • Andrew says:

Travelled back from Chicago on Saturday landing on a remote stand and can confirm there was a first bus waiting for us, worked very well.

One of my bags was first to arrive, unfortunately my second bag was still in Chicago…

  • Waribai says:

Yes, we flew back from HND in F on Monday and I was commenting to the Mrs how they make a big issue of letting us 7 passengers in F off first but then we all ended up in a big mass queuing for the train from the C gates anyway!
Just to be clear, the first bus is just for remote stand flights?

If it were extended to B and C gates that would actually make a difference!

Our bags weren’t off first but they were in the first 30 I would say which has not happened for a while so maybe change is a foot?

    • Jonathan says:

I think the priority bag system has unofficially existed for a while on return flights to Heathrow from certain outstations. In Japan & HKG particularly the local baggage handlers are used to ensuring priority bags are unloaded first so I suspect have paid attention to BA’s priority tags and loaded separately & last as part of their standard procedures. This would usually result in bags appearing first in Heathrow.

I guess we should be grateful for this trial if it formalises this arrangement but I find it surprising they can’t cope with it ex LHR

    • john says:

Last time I was bused from a remote-stand they took us on about a 10min drive to A-gates which I thought was standard practice, but I guess might not be.. Was a shorthaul arrival though.

  • Julie says:

We came back from Amsterdam in March to a remote stand at LHR. They had a bus just for business and made sure no economy passengers got off until the bus had gone.

  • Paul says:

If they treat the bags as crew bags this should work quite nicely! At Heathrow crew bags arrive on a dedicated belt so you don’t normally see them. At outstations they usually arrive with passenger bags and in my experience they arrive very promptly. Indeed, it is not uncommon for the crew to be leaving the airport well ahead of their passengers.
I suppose this trial is really simply an acceptance that BA First is, at best, a mediocre business product. Last nights TV programme about SQ’s new F suite brought home just how poor BA F is.
Let’s also be in no doubt that the bus will be used to assist those with tight connections just as the club Europe one is in T3.

    • Waribai says:

On Monday from HND crew bags came out with ours…

    • Adam says:

To be honest I am more concerned about the priority through the airport than the seat itself. If we can get some consistency that gets me from the plane to the car park in as little time as possible then it will go along way to making me happy.

    • Mr G says:

Crew bags come out with passenger bags Paul. They only come on a dedicated belt at the south end if they have arrived from T3

  • Andrew says:

Yellow tags are for First, orange tags are for Club.
