Holiday Inn Sheffield to become a Crowne Plaza hotel

I don’t normally mention brand switches but long-term readers know that Sheffield hotels pop up on here from time to time.

Two weeks ago I had what was arguably the worst hotel meal of my entire life in the Holiday Inn Sheffield, not helped by having to wait an hour from ordering in order to receive said worst meal.  At the time I thought that the hotel was sliding deeper into disrepair with every annual visit we make.  I was therefore shocked to find that Holiday Inn Sheffield is being rebranded as a Crowne Plaza later in the Summer.

Crowne Plaza Sheffield

There is some refurbishment work underway, I admit, but we are talking about a hotel which gives no elite recognition as far as I can tell and which generally gives you a worse room – rather than a better room – than the one you booked, the other weekend being a case in point.  The new bathroom in our old room had clearly been tiled by some random con-artist picked from Yell.  And the pancake machine has disappeared ….

The upside of staying there is that you don’t need to bother bringing an alarm clock.  There are so many moth holes in the curtains that the rooms is flooded with light as soon as the sun comes up ….

Slight OT, has anyone stayed at the Doubletree Hilton Sheffield Park? I need a couple of mattress runs and was tempted at tying this with some hiking.

    • Tariq says:

Yes. Stayed a few times before, I like it – and a bargain on points (10k).

      • Janeyferr says:

Ditto. Only spent one night but it was good. Low points and can sometimes be had for a bargain cash price.

    • Craig says:

Thanks, £56 a night for some of the dates I’m looking. Hopefully the weather will hold up for some walking over the next few weeks.

Bits: On the Lloyds Avios cards, if I don’t pay the full balance when the statement is due am I liable for interest on the whole amount of spend or just interest on the outstanding balance?

I put approx £1700 through the in January. I always pay off the balance in full and I paid this off in February before the statement due date. In February I put approx £2k on the card. Unfortunately, I confused the earlier statement and only paid £1700 when I paid this in March. In March I put £2400 on the card. There was also the £300 that I’d carried over and also £70 interest. I didn’t spot my mistake, nor the additional interest.

The statement for March was £2770. I paid that in full, again, ahead of the statement due date. In April I only put £1k on the card. I’ve just received the statement, which is due towards the end of the month. It also includes another £35 interest. I’ve just spotted my error in March, when I underplayed by ~£300. However, £105 interest seems excessive for £300 over (at most) a 2 month period. I cleared the balance on the card in April. I never withdraw cash on the card etc.

The APR is 26.2% for card purchases, which is what all these transactions were.

Am I missing the point? I never run a balance, so all this is a little new to me.

    • Jack says:

You pay interest on the whole balance for that month if you don’t pay off in full. I have made the same mistake before but lesson learned and never again!

      • Jovanna says:

Wow and ouch! Thank you for the quick reply.

        • JamesB says:

Jovanna, just to double check, is this card more than two years old? IIRC the card comes with two years interest free spending so I was just wondering if it may be an error?

        • Jovanna says:

Yes, third year with the card started last October.

    • Scott says:

May be too late now, but when I once made a genuine error (new card, and I forgot to set up a DD) in failing to clear my balance, I contacted the card provider, who agreed to waive any interest charges/late payment fees.

      • callum says:

It’s always worth asking. Most of the major banks seem to have a policy of refunding interest/charges once a year if requested.

    • the_real_a says:

I had this with MBNA a couple of months ago, i was unable to clear the balance by ONE day after their website was down for maintenance and ended up with a £300+ interest bill (lots of work expenses). Thankfully the agent waived the interest as a first offense as i blamed them for the website issue (which was true)

    OT
Upgraded my Amex Gold Charge card (opened in Feb 2019 ) to PLAT

Done the spend, last week, spend points have hit but no sign of the 20K points yet

    Should I chase?

    • James M says:

It took – few weeks for mine to arrive, I didn’t need them right away so wasn’t on my list to chase.

They did turn up without me getting involved, just after the statement where I’d hit the spend – maybe it triggers when the statement is produced?

    • Anna says:

Did you upgrade via the link or other site promising the 20k points? Mine posted pretty much straight away.

      • James M says:

I used the upgrade link; they sent me a decline letter and the card / pack on the same day.

I called to question the decline letter and they said it was a mistake, maybe there was a bug in the system and they sorted the points manually later?

  • MarkH says:

OT – if I apply for the Hertz and Avis statuses through amex platinum do they continue after the card is cancelled (like the hotel statuses) or cancel immediately (like the PP)?

    • Jovanna says:

Keep the card on your profile and your status should remain. Mine did with Herzt. I cancelled the Amex Plat long before the card expired but my PC status remained.

I’ve taken out the Platinum card again and I’ve updated my profile details with Hertz. I status matched to Avis last year – President’s Circle but I dropped down to Avis Preferred this month.

      A very insightful comment 😉
As with any type of music, hotel promotion, cheap flight deal etc the value and level of appreciation shown towards it is very personal. I didn’t go for this as it’s not my cup of tea but others love them!

  • Paul says:

OT… took out the companion credit card for my Amex Gold Charge Card a couple of weeks ago, following the link for a bonus 5k MR points following £500 spend. Pushed £1500 through, for which the base points are showing, but no bonus which I was kinda expecting to be “attached” to the transaction in which I met the spend threshold. Am I just being impatient? Keen to resolve ASAP so that I can cancel, prior to upgrading the charge card to Plat.

    • Craig says:

I have the same problem with the Plat companion, no bonus points even though I followed the link and Amex won’t budge on awarding them!

    • Stu N says:

They will say 30 days, but mine never appeared. A few people have reported issues – it took me four calls/ chats and three months to resolve this. Just persevere.

      • Craig says:

Just about to start the 3rd chat. If there’s no luck I’m cancelling the card.

        • meta says:

Don’t chat! I’ve phoned them and they added points there and then manually. It showed as soon as I ended the call.

        • roberto says:

The chat staff are in New Delhi and cant actually do anything and nor can thier supervisors it seems..

          Call…..

        • mark2 says:

I have never managed to get chat on various accounts and browsers.
I think that I have been the lucky one from what I read here.

  • Tony says:

    Massively O/T, though still cards-related:

I hold Plat Amex and wanted to refer my other half for a BA Amex (free) CC — she already holds a BAPP CC, so this would effectively be a downgrading process.

Would I still get the 18K MR points if she was successfully approved even though I appreciate my other half wouldn’t get a bonus?

    Thanks!

    • JPV says:

AFAIK you will get the referral points if you successfully refer for any card other than the “basic” card, where “successful” means they are approved for the card and activate it.

Whether or not the person you refer qualifies for a bonus of their own, or meets the bonus spend if they do quality, should *not* influence whether or not you get the referral points. As far as I know!

    • Anna says:

I did this about 6 weeks ago, the points still haven’t turned up and Amex say it takes up to 10 weeks. For MR card referrals though, the points have landed roughly a week later more or less at the same time the referred card has arrived.

  • BlueThroughCrimp says:

Stayed in the HI Sheffield 4 years ago, had a room looking over the front car park.
Lovely building, but very dated. Clean enough then.

I do like staying in these old Station hotels. Also stayed a few times in the Hilton in Nottingham. A good refurbishment would make them really good places to stay.

    • Arnold says:

Hilton Nottingham is real waste, now cursed to be a budget low dem option for those visiting the awful city centre

      • BlueThroughCrimp says:

I only go to Nottingham for the ice hockey, and any time I’ve been there, it’s been a nice place, certainly been to worse city centres!
The hotel? Well, it was easier for me to manually operate the cistern than expect the mechanism to work properly…

        • Peter K says:

I’m currently in the doubletree in Nottingham and it’s very nice (no pool though). It’s not far from the centre of Nottingham and well worth the points cost. I quite like Nottingham. Not as trendy as say Manchester but a I personally rate much higher than the likes of Birmingham.
