Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

Five UK Marriott hotels, mainly country clubs, are to leave the chain

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

Five UK Marriott hotels are leaving the chain in two weeks, despite being included on the new points pricing list from August.

These are:

  • Sunderland Marriott
  • Newcastle Marriott Gosforth Park
  • Hollins Hall Marriott Hotel & Country Club, Shipley
  • Meon Valley Marriott Hotel & Country Club, Southampton
  • Sprowston Manor Marriott Hotel & Country Club, Norwich

The last day that these hotels will operate under the Marriott brand is 18th July.

These hotels were recently for sale – I don’t know if a deal was concluded.  The removal of the Marriott branding is being described as a positive to give the buyer a clean sheet.

  • Ludovic says:

Got my 90000 Avios from IB last night. Did their promo on 1st day. Had my IB account for over 2 years. All went smoothly.

  • Dan says:

No points for me yet 🙁 Made 4 bookings first day, 5 the second. Account over 2 years old.

  • Delbert says:

90k Avios each have safely arrived in both mine and my wife’s accounts overnight.

Both accounts are over eighteen months old.

  • danam says:

Thanks for pinching my screenshot Rob 🙂

  • AndyW says:

Nothing here yet, only booked on the Sunday

  • Jim says:

The news re:Royal Brunei is hardly breaking news and has been reported elsewhere for quite a while

    • John says:

Did Rob say it was breaking news? Lots of things are reported elsewhere sometimes long before they show up here but that doesn’t mean Rob shouldn’t write about them

(well in this particular case I first saw it in the comments of the previous article about Dubai)

    • Rob says:

But I never saw it, and if I never saw it I assume others didn’t either.

  • Bagoly says:

Mine have arrived but Mrs’s have not, even though relevant bookings are mainly on her account with me as additional passenger!

Perhaps different because my account has a history which includes redemptions using avios transferred from BA, and earnings from partner flights, whereas hers has only non-flight earnings over the last two years.

    • Matt says:

Exactly the same situation for my partner and me

      • Matt says:

All sorted now both my partner’s and my account have 90,000.

    • Mark says:

Similar here. Mine posted to account which last had activity in Nov 17. My wife’s has not – last activity Dec 16. Neither of us have ever earnt or redeemed miles on our IB+ accounts through flying – just through various IB specific promotions over the years and, in my case, hotel rewards.

Obviously something going on relating to activity on older accounts.

      • pauldb says:

I’m also without my avios on an older account. Possibly a pattern but not too concerned yet. (My account is old enough that the facebook avios I gained to activate it have long-since expired, but I didn’t see anything in the T&Cs that somehow this is a problem.)

  • Yuff says:

Did mine Saturday and Sunday, whilst in Spain using a vpn, both sets of 90k are in mount accounts this morning. Both accounts years old 😉

    • Yuff says:

Flew back from PMI via Madrid on IB3166, it is such a good flight, tight connection though especially when they bus you to the terminal…..
Won’t have any problems spending the Avios over the next year handy 180k Avios for £360 albeit 7 flights didnt track for cash back….:(

    • Lady London says:

      Hi Yuff,

which VPN do you find best while travelling? I’m looking for one to sign up with, particularly to access USA and UK TV whilst travelling in neither country.

Would really appreciate any tips on good VPN’s for this?

      • Rob says:

Tunnelbear is idiot-proof, almost childish, in how it works. No charge for 500MB per month and a small fee after that. Some autocratic countries have now blocked it but that goes for most other VPNs too. No issue in the US etc.

        • the real harry1 says:

but 500MB doesn’t get you much TV 🙂

        • RussellH says:

I find tunnelbear needs to be turned off to access most of my points a/cs – impossible to login usually.

      • Lady London says:

What are you using Harry? For some reason I have vpnexpress in mind… just don’t know how good it is to pick up US tv in third countries.

        • the real harry1 says:

          tvcatchup
          radioplayer uk
          watchbritishtv
          robssatellitetv
