This is part two of my review of the Melia Barcelona Sky. Part one with my room and the restaurant is here. Part two focuses on The Level at Melia Barcelona Sky.

The Level at Melia Barcelona Sky is the 5* part of the hotel. I was told that guests can upgrade their rooms to a Level room for around €50, which could work out quite nicely as breakfast, ‘all day’ snacks and happy hour are complimentary for Level guests.

I checked in on the 25th floor at The Level reception where I was offered a seat and a glass of sparkling wine. I look at the lounge itself a bit further down.

Rooms

I talked about my room (which was in the main 4* part of the Melia Barcelona Sky hotel) in part one of the review. I was also shown a Level room which was a similar size but had a Nespresso machine as well as a kettle in the room and where my room had a chaise lounge, the Level room had a sofa instead.

The room below is a Level Grand Premium with City View, there are also Sea View rooms available.

The bathrooms in the Level rooms have a shower, separate bathtub and two sinks.

They have toiletries by Loewe. I didn’t get to test them, though I would have loved to as I believe they must be better than the Melia own brand toiletries.

The lounge

The Level Lounge is open from noon until 10pm and soft drinks, Cava, wine, snacks and coffee are available during the opening hours.

There were a good amount of seats available and the lounge was never packed when I was there.

There was also a work area with a computer.

Every day from 6pm until 7:30pm Level guests can enjoy complimentary drinks and canapes at Bar Cielos on the 24th floor.

Included are all drinks from the bar except for cocktails.

The canape selection was decent with gazpacho, sandwiches and a number of small salads and dips. Depending on how hungry you are you could skip dinner afterwards.

Breakfast

Breakfast for The Level at Melia Barcelona Sky guests was served on the 24th flour. It was an impressive buffet with a large selection of cheeses, meats and bread as well as fruits, salad, yogurt, cereals and made to order egg dishes.

The breakfast room had stunning views over Barcelona.

The only thing that bothered me was that coffee, water and juice were table service and I had to wait a little bit too long to be served.

Conclusion

As I said at the end of Part 1, Melia Barcelona Sky is a perfectly fine hotel but I would recommend to pay a bit extra for The Level package. The benefits of the free breakfast, lounge and happy hour should offset the modest extra cost and you will also receive a higher quality room and better views on top.

We were due to stay at the Melia Sky a few years ago but the room was so grubby and falling to bits in every respect, we checked out within 10 minutes of arrival and switched to the Sarria which was wonderful and to which we’ve returned a couple of times since. Maybe the Sky has been refurbished since then.

I recently visited a LIDL in Barcelona. The rather good LIDL cava – £4.95 per bottle in UK – is 1.79 EUR. There are two better quality vintages for 2.49 and 2.79 EUR. And a whole load of other yummy delicacies. Worth a visit. Especially if you have a lorry. Or even better a convoy of lorries.

Next time you should use the Aerobus from the Airport to Barcelona, about 14 euros including return and they run every 15 mins, no changing

  The Aerobus is usually a waste of money as it runs along exactly the same route as the regular 46 bus (every 13 minutes, €2.20 single or included in T-10 tickets / travelcards).
  
  I normally don’t do taxis but in this case it’s the sensible thing to do. Which is also why I don’t think I will stay at the Melia Sky – it’s just a bit in the middle of “nowhere” between the touristy stuff and the beach.

  The aerobus is very fast, runs every 5 mins from T1 and every 10 mins from T2, much faster than the regular bus and is 10.20 Euros return. It’s great for the center and west of the center.
  
  North East side of town where this hotel is (and where I live) requires a change or two on public transport, many different ways to do it and it will take an hour to an hour and a half. Taxi will do it in half the time for about 30 euros from the rank.

Stayed at the Melia Sky last year in one of the Level rooms and quite enjoyed the stay, everything other than the Canape selection in the lounge was good in my view. It was a business trip and location wise it was only a 20 min walk to the conference center and there were some nice restaurants close to the hotel too.

The location of the Meliá is really not that great for…well…anything.
It had trendy summer pool parties years ago when it opened, but walking 20-30 minutes to get anywhere in July weather…not really.
And the Cabify price sounds more than a street taxi!

      It’s a good location for the local tech/finance businesses, but not for much else! 10 mins walk to the beach is ok, but you could stay at a beach front hotel instead! The Sarria is also not in a great location for tourists, but good for the big office blocks nearby.

Great timing on the review, I have recently been trying more Melia properties after getting Platinum Status via American Express and free access to Level at the properties. So far I have been quite impressed adnd was looking at this property for a break soon! Generally I am finding the call centre for Melia tobe mixed but the Level Service and recognition of status very good at Melia’s with Level but not so great at the Sol properties!

We paid the ~ 50 euro to upgrade to the level at Melia Serrano in Madrid. Agree was definitely worth it for the (significantly) upgraded room, breakfast, snacks and evening canapes / drinks. Will be looking to do this at all Melia properties with the level in the future.
