SPG Amex

What was new in the last month?

The Starwood Preferred Guest American Express restructured

In advance of the merger of Starwood Preferred Guest and Marriott Rewards on 18th August, the SPG Amex made a few changes:

the earning rate moved from 1 SPG point per £1 to 3 ‘new scheme’ points per £1 – this is not a change in real terms

the free night voucher changed – instead of a free WEEKEND night at a Category 1-5 hotel, you will now receive a free night, valid every day, at any hotel which costs under 25,000 points.  This makes the voucher more valuable although still a poor return for spending £25,000.

the refer-a-friend bonus dropped 40%, from 5,000 SPG points (15,000 ‘new scheme’ points) to 9,000 ‘new scheme’ points

The SPG Amex is always worth a look because you can get the sign-up bonus of 30,000 ‘new scheme’ points (worth 10,000 Avios or around £150 of free hotel nights) irrespective of what other Amex cards you have.  As long as you haven’t had another SPG Amex in the previous six months, you’ll get the bonus.

Full details are on the Amex website here.

In other news, transfers of SPG points from the credit card and from Membership Rewards are now suspended until after the new merged loyalty scheme launches on the 18th.

The old TSB Avios cards restructured

If you still have the old TSB Avios credit cards, which are closed to new applicants, you should have received a letter about upcoming changes.

The Premier card is being closed entirely.  The basic card is losing its companion American Express card and will just operate as a Mastercard going forward.

You can find out more in this article.

Hilton Honors sends out a survey on a new credit card

Hilton is currently working on a new UK credit card to replace the Barclaycard one which is now closed to new applicants.

They recently sent a survey to some Hilton Honors members to share their ideas.  This HFP article explains what they are considering.

Marriott Mastercard UK

We are expecting the Marriott Mastercard to relaunch in August

I have no details AT ALL on this.  However, if they simply reopen the old Marriott card – which I still have – to new applicants once again, this is what you will get:

  • a Mastercard issued by Creation
  • no annual fee
  • 1 ‘new scheme’ point per £1 spent
  • 10,000 ‘new scheme’ points, worth around £50, as a sign-up bonus
  • 2,000 free ‘new scheme’ points annually on your card anniversary
  • 10 elite night credits each year

Keep an eye on HfP for news on the launch.

All of the MBNA airline cards are finally dead

All of the MBNA airline cards are now finally dead.  Even if you haven’t been sent the replacement Horizon Visa card yet, your existing card is now operating as Horizon with cashback benefits.

This is a surprisingly impressive card to use when travelling as I explained in this review of the Horizon Visa credit card.

New Virgin Atlantic credit cards

The old Virgin Atlantic cards finally closed last month

The MBNA Virgin Atlantic cards switched earlier, on 6th July.  From 7th July, your card has been operating as a Horizon Visa.

This article will help you decide which of the two new Virgin Money issued Virgin Atlantic cards is best for you.  The website for the two new cards is here.

Remember that:

The free Reward card has a 5000 miles sign-up bonus, earns 0.75 miles per £1 and comes with a 241 or upgrade voucher for spending £20,000 per year

The £160 Reward+ card has a 15000 miles sign-up bonus, earns 1.5 miles per £1 and comes with a 241 or upgrade voucher for spending £10,000 per year

The cards are issued by Virgin Money so it is very unlikely that you will be conflicted due to having any other cards from the same bank

As long as your credit is excellent, picking up 5000 miles from the free Virgin Reward credit card seems a no-brainer especially as there is no minimum spend threshold.

Legal stuff: I need to tell you that the free Reward card has a representative APR of 22.9% variable.  The Reward+ card has a representative APR of 63.9% based on a notional £1200 credit limit and the annual fee.  The representative APR on purchases is 22.9%.

I’m interested to hear what Hilton are bringing. If they play their cards right (no pun intended) they could be a serious competitor IMHO to the SPG card. SPG’s 60% sliced off the bonus plus spend £25,000 a year just for a free middling category hotel night isn’t doing it for me.

  • Nigel S says:

Morning, I am looking for some advice bit I have a feeling the answer will be “it depends”!

I will need to pay a tax bill of just over £6k in January so have obtained a Curve card for this purpose.

I’m now trying decide whether to link it to my current Lloyds Premier Avios, but I wouldn’t be able to use the upgrade vouchers very easily, or get a new card. With 3 young children we don’t really do hotel stays so not sure would benefit from cards such as the IHG. I have a BAPP but haven’t really got into churning to maximise my spend so this could be the start if a journey!

Virgin looks interesting as an alternative to Avios but again how easy is it to redeem for a larger family?

    Sorry for rambling!

    • rts says:

I find Virgin fairly easy to redeem. I have used it to HKG and Barbados so far. I haven’t tried using the points to the US yet but that will probably be next year. Virgin points are generally more difficult to obtain compared the avios albeit you could churn the gold/plat amex and use the MR for Virgin Flyer Points.

Lloyds voucher is useful as you can upgrade either 1xreturn or 2xsingles.

    • Anna says:

Not sure if you meant this but you can’t link Curve to Amex so wouldn’t be able to pay your tax with it.

    • Jonty says:

Hotel stays with 3 young children can be great. According to kids best hotels have room service (tea in front of cbeebies before bed), swimming pools, and places to hide. Rooms with separate bedrooms and sofa beds in the living room are best. At weekends, empty business hotels next to motorways can be great

      • Anna says:

Hilton’s suite hotels are great for families, e.g. Homewood Suites, Embassy Suites (and usually include breakfast which is even better). A one-bedroom suite with 2 double beds and a sofa bed will comfortable sleep 5, and having a kitchenette is brilliant when you all have different feeding requirements.

      • ankomonkey says:

        And bunk beds!

    • Nigel S says:

Thanks for the comments. Yes, sorry wasn’t clear – trying to decide on which non AMEX card to punt for, or stick with Lloyds. So something to think about.

      • Leo says:

I’ve always put my tax and vat onto my IHG -card but I’ve just swapped over to the Virgin mc. To be honest this was out of boredom once I’d put enough through the IHG card to get Spire. Seeing how bad the £ is against the $ however I won’t be going to the States for a while so I might switch back to IHG!

  • Alan Cairns says:

Slightly OT comment, but something to consider.
I’ve got the IHG Premium card and have received the voucher for the free night. I was going to use it for a hotel in Edinburgh or Glasgow (we live in Scotland) the next available Free night Stay on a Saturday night for a Hotel Indigo or Crown Plaza is June 2019 (there is generally only Sunday night stays available). So you need to be really organised or accept that your Free night will be in a Holiday Inn, etc.
To me, thats not really worth the card fee.

    • Genghis says:

Different circumstances I guess. I used mine last year at Amstel on a Sat night, my wife’s in Porto on a Sat night and I’ve booked the Amstel again for a Friday night with this year’s.

    • Nick M says:

Do you need special availability? I thought it was just whenever there was a redemption night available?

      • Rob says:

Any night showing redemption availability can use the voucher. You rarely have any trouble getting IHG reward nights – if you are looking a long way ahead it is more likely, unless there is a special event that day, that the hotel simply hasn’t loaded them.

        • Alan Cairns says:

Was looking for September and November based around event dates. The IHG website shows just about all dates blanked out for these hotels

          • Rob says:

Hotels only make 5% of rooms available for reward nights so it is very possible that, for major events, they went a long time ago. There is also the simple logic that, on nights when cash rates are high, people are more likely to use your points full stop.

    • Mr Dee says:

Don’t know if you know this but its not limited to a weekend you know thats the Ambassador free night (Maybe you know this and just wanted to stay at a weekend)

    • Mr Dee says:

Getting IC Hong Kong so not a bad redemption 🙂

  • RTS says:

I recently added my partner as a supp cardholder on my BAPP. I hadn’t received the 3k offer… what are the chances that I will still get this?

    • Genghis says:

Did you add when you had the card? If so, zero chance unless there was a specific offer you were targeted for.

  • BJ says:

Slightly OT. I complained about lack of Hilton offers on my amex platinum card yesterday. The agent said he couldn’t do anything about it then but an offer has popped up this morning..

  • Gill says:

Any success stories with SPG amex points stuck in transfer to SPG actually arriving? Amex confirmed mine were sent on 14th July (before the delay was announced) but nothing arrived on the SPG side.

  • RTS says:

OT – Curve – It seems Curve have changed their cash withdrawal limits to £200 per day?!

  • Roger1* says:

A snailmail letter from Virgin tells me my no-fee card limit will be almost doubled to £18k. Since Virgin Money got a bit of stick about their 0% deals, I hadn’t expected such a move, especially after just one statement/DD payment cycle..

The new limit is still less than 2/3rds of my BAPP limit and way, way below my late bmi plat limit with MBNA but welcome nevertheless.
