Hertz is 100 and has launched a Centenary car rental sale

Hertz has been running various promotions this year to celebrate its 100th birthday and has now launched the official ‘Centenary Sale’.

It runs until Monday 12th November, although logged-in Gold Plus Rewards members will be able to book until Monday 19th November.

It is valid for rentals picked up before 16th December across Europe, the Middle East and Africa.  Both pre-paid and pay on collection rates are included.  All car groups are reduced but not vans or the ‘Dream Collection’ of performance cars.

The headline deal is ‘up to 25% off’, with a higher ‘up to 30% off’ for Gold Plus Rewards members.  As always with the murky world of car rental pricing you should treat such claims with a pinch of salt.

However, if you have any rentals booked between now and 16th December you might want to reprice them just in case the sale does throw up a bargain.

Details of the Centenary Sale are on the Hertz website here.

How to get FREE car rental status and other benefits via UK credit cards

How to get FREE car rental status and other benefits via UK credit cards (April 2024)

If you hire a car in the UK, you can get special benefits (discounts, upgrades, free additional drivers etc) if you have elite status with a car rental programme. You can get elite status for free via certain American Express cards.

The Platinum Card and American Express Business Platinum

The Platinum Card from American Express and American Express Business Platinum come with two free car hire status cards. Your supplementary Platinum cardholder can also receive status in their own right.

From Avis, you receive President’s Club status in Avis Preferred. This gets you up to 25% off standard rates, a free additional driver and a guaranteed one class upgrade. For weekend rentals you will receive a two class upgrade, subject to availability.

From Hertz, you receive ‘Five Star’ status in Hertz Gold Plus Rewards. This gets you up to 15% off standard rates, a free additional driver and a one class upgrade, subject to availability.

Hertz also offers Platinum cardholders a 4 hour grace period on rentals. Your final day is treated as 28 hours, so a 1pm pick up with a 5pm return the following day is only charged as one day, not two days. We wrote about the Hertz / Platinum 4 hour grace period here.

The Platinum Card also comes with full car hire insurance with no obligation to pay for the rental via American Express. You can refuse any attempts to sell you additional insurance at pick up. This benefit has substantial value if you rent on a regular basis.

You can find more details on the two Platinum cards, and apply, in our full reviews linked below. You can apply here for the personal card and here for the business card.

Re: Hertz – thanks for the prompt. I knew about this as a PC member but the article prompted me into action and just saved me 1000CHF on my forward bookings for the ski season!

  • Cheshire Pete says:

I wonder if at Iberia Zone E checkin you’ll still be able to drop off your bag from 5am no matter when your flight is. Dedicated Iberia checkin often enforce their 2 hour rule, or is that just at their smaller Spanish airports?

  • Shoestring says:

O/T the 1-day Ryanair ‘from £9.99’ sale is a genuine one (again).

Some crazy prices from Bristol – routes I monitor that don’t usually get discounted like this.

  • Andrew S says:

O/T: My SPG Amex points for September statement appears to have bounced back to my Amex SPG account, a week after my August statement points appeared in my SPG account.

    Seems odd 🙁

    • E says:

Mine too, Andrew S. I got my August points about 10 days ago, followed by my October statement points last week. Only the September ones were still missing but, as I’m out of the country, I hadn’t contacted Amex again about them. Was intending to do it when I got back. Am hoping these will now just go across in November with November’s points and then it will actually work properly from then.

    • Lee says:

Same for me, hopefully all the points will reach my SPG account next month.

  • Mr(s) Entitled says:

Am I the only one who finds the prospect of Hetz starting vehicle rentals in 1918 Europe odd? There must be more to their corporate history than this. At least I now know what I will be searching for during my morning coffee break.

  • C says:

Is there any update on the mooted Avios devaluation that was being held up by the IT system? It’s always moderately tempting to buy miles at a 50% bonus rate but I’m wary of doing so if they’re going to tank in value soon.

    • Anna says:

Was the BA offer not just for last weekend?

    • Mark2 says:

Changing the number of Avios for a route should not require any IT changes. Someone in the business should be able to change it on a screen.

      • ChrisC says:

the apparent change is to provide for dynamic pricing of avios not just changing the fixed number of avios needed so the IT is indeed more tricky.

  • Chris says:

The Marriott game wouldn’t let me select the correct answer yesterday. Not so much a game, more of a fix…

    • KevMc says:

How you answer the questions makes no difference to the reward received – just click anything.

  • Lee says:

    OT – AMEX Hilton offer
Has anyone tried the new Hilton £250 get £50 back offer with prepaid payment? I will check out on 1st Jan so too late for the offer.

    • Jamie says:

I’ve used similar offers before and as long as the hotel charges before the offer end date it’s always processed fine.

      • Jon says:

That’s good. I’m looking at some of Rob’s suggestions for a London hilton in a week or two, and would definitely appreciate £50 off!
