Expedia drops Nectar as an earning and spending partner

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

Expedia and Nectar have announced that they are ending their partnership on 15th December.

At present, you can earn Nectar points on all Expedia bookings at the following rates:

Package bookings: 1,000 Nectar points
Hotel-only bookings: 200 Nectar points
Flight-only bookings: 200 Nectar points
Car-only bookings: 200 Nectar points

With such paltry earn rates, it is hardly surprising that few people were choosing to use Expedia purely because of the carrot of Nectar points.  Remember that, in 99% of cases, Nectar points are worth exactly 0.5p when redeemed.

Expedia drops Nectar

You will continue to earn points on bookings made up to 15th December, irrespective of when you travel.

From the same date, it will no longer be possible to redeem Nectar points for Expedia vouchers.   To be honest, since they were worth the same 0.5p per point of value as redeeming them in Sainsbury’s, this is not a great loss.  You can always use your points to pay for your groceries and use the money saved to book travel.

Sainsbury’s bought Nectar earlier this year, and I’m not sure if they will consider this a loss or if they are happy to see the scheme shrink down to a pure Sainsbury’s ‘earn and burn’ scheme.

Expedia Rewards, the lacklustre Expedia loyalty scheme which we covered here, will continue.

Our review of the American Express Nectar credit card is here if you are interested in other ways of boosting your Nectar points.

    Morning all
Does anyone know of an good value way of acquiring Turkish Airlines Miles, with the Amex to Marriot devaluation wondering if there is a better deal out there!

    Many thanks

    • Genghis says:

When was this Amex to Marriot devaluation?

      • Rob says:

Conversion rates for Marriott members are improved following the SPG merger, and are unchanged for SPG members.

        • SG says:

Was not Amex to SPG to Marriot a 3:1,now Amex to Marriot 2:3?!!

        • Genghis says:

Amex to SPG was 2:1 now 2:3 in line with x3 SPG->Marriott. For airline transfers, used to be 20k SPG -> 25k airline, now 60k Marriott, also in line with x3. No devaluation, just different numbers.

    • Louie says:

Maybe SG is in Australia? There was a huge devaluation there.

    OT_ World Duty Free

If I am not into Cigars, ALcohol or Perfume, can I buy anything else at WDF?
I have two amex offers (10% and 20% CB); and would like to use it if there is something else on offer? Hope it was Dixons Travel as opposed to WDF.

    Virgin :/

  • Joe Green says:

OT: Did the nectar double up 20k points = 40k points and not receieved the vouchers in the post even though promo is 7 days and started yesterday. Noticed online many people effected by a glitch.

They said they would refund 20k points but I think its unacceptable not to honour the offer and therefore refund 40k points or at least extend the voucher validity to 7 days after it arrives.

Anyway I can force them to do this bearing in mind they breached ts and cs.

    • BJ says:

Why? You can pop into store today and double up the points into vouchers and use them just the same. No loss involved as you would need to go into store with your mailed vouchers anyway. The promotion is not for double points, it is for double value when redeeming them. Not sure why anybody bothered getting vouchers through the mail when they can no longer be used online. Best go in store, find what you want and then change number of points required.

      • Scallder says:

+1 as you might have planned to use them for something specific only to find out the Sainsbury’s store near you is out of stock of the item. Planning on going on Saturday to use the full £100 for £200 value however will only swap the points for vouchers once the stuff is in my trolley!

      • Nick Burch says:

Then make sure you use a maximum of 2 vouchers in a transaction, otherwise the till gets upset and 1+ supervisors are required to force it though! (See shopperpoints for more details)

        • Scallder says:

          Thanks Nick – will do

        • Dale says:

Was in yesterday and unloaded £170 of vouchers on wine 🙂 Been waiting for sometime to get rid of these pesky nectar points.
Just put through in two lots because of max 2 vouchers set up, no problems

  • Terry says:

Amex Offers – had an email early last week about offers from Superdrug, WH Smith and Wilko but only had the Wilko offer under My Offers online. The other two offers have now turned up without chasing. Worth checking if you had a similar email.

  • MDA says:

OT: Its been 6 months and 3 days since a closed amex. Is it safe to join or wait for new user bonus?

  • Delbert says:

Thanks for the Groupon gen, Rob. Just enough time for one last purchase under both my wife’s and I accounts before the proverbial hits the fan on 1 December.

Can’t wait to see how this all pans out.
