The last British Airways Boeing 767 flight took place yesterday

At 22.35 last night, the arrival of the British Airways flight from Larnaca marked the final commercial Boeing 767 flight for the airline.

Both remaining aircraft are due to fly out of Heathrow on Monday to the BA maintenance facility in Wales – I’m not sure what will become of them but it seems unlikely they will fly again.

There were originally 11 aircraft in the fleet, with the first arriving in 1989.  At one point the fleet grew to 28 although many ended up being leased to other airlines.

I was thinking of putting together an article on the British Airways 767 fleet but it turns out that it has already been done, far better than I could have done it, in this article by a BA pilot.  I strongly recommend you read it if you’re interested in this sort of thing.

In truth, it is being polite to say that the British Airways fleet had seen better days.

The regular random pinging of call bells was a common complaint, something which gets annoying on a four hour flight, as were complaints over water leakage from the galley running down the cabin.  And the broken seats.  And arm rests.  And tray tables.  And the locked-out loos ….

Couple of facts to amend on the 767 article. The last two remaining aircraft flew today from LHR to MOD St Athan where they will be stored. BA 767 pilots over on twitter are saying the aircraft will be scrapped with parts being sold off. St Athan is a couple of miles from the BA maintenance base at CWL.

Interestingly BA was the launch customer for the 767 powered by RB211 engines. IIRC only BA and a small Chinese airline ended up selecting the RB211 engine.

IHG points break up. Interestingly London Newbury Park is in for 15,000 points but when you click on the link the old price comes up at 10,000 points 🙂

  • Shoestring says:

That’s our 180K IB Avios used up – well, short by about 1000 but probably can’t be bothered to mop up, as RFS fee is cheaper so not much in it if I stick with BAEC for a European redemption.

They get 1 night in a Hilton standard room – anything worth getting signing up thru Plat these days?

    • Genghis says:

Status benefits per rule book not given on third party stays, but they may get lucky.

  • Travel Bunny 1978 says:

Regarding the 767, yes it was a bit of a dog towards the final few years but what a great plane. We watched it come over us on the outskirts of Reading last night having been on it multiple times.

  • Bob says:

OT: Sorry, this has probably been asked many times before. I have the exact same offer (spend £250 at Hilton for £50 credit) on my main platinum and its supplementary card. If both cards are used to individually meet the terms and conditions of the offer, will I receive the credit once or twice?

  • Bob says:

That’s great news, thanks very much.

  • TM says:

OT – Does anyone think we will see any new Amex Plat UK benefits within the next year?

  • C F Frost says:

OT. The voucher to access a Lufthansa airport lounge with the new M&M card – haven’t yet received – is it for one person only?

    • Rob says:

Believe so but not seen one yet

PS. Hope Amex don’t realise you’ve defected!
