How to get FREE car rental status and other benefits via UK credit cards

How to get FREE car rental status and other benefits via UK credit cards (October 2024)

If you hire a car in the UK, you can get special benefits (discounts, upgrades, free additional drivers etc) if you have elite status with a car rental programme. You can get elite status for free via certain American Express cards.

The Platinum Card and American Express Business Platinum

The Platinum Card from American Express and American Express Business Platinum come with two free car hire status cards. Your supplementary Platinum cardholder can also receive status in their own right.

From Avis, you receive President’s Club status in Avis Preferred. This gets you up to 25% off standard rates, a free additional driver and a guaranteed one class upgrade. For weekend rentals you will receive a two class upgrade, subject to availability.

From Hertz, you receive ‘Five Star’ status in Hertz Gold Plus Rewards. This gets you up to 15% off standard rates, a free additional driver and a one class upgrade, subject to availability.

Hertz also offers Platinum cardholders a 4 hour grace period on rentals. Your final day is treated as 28 hours, so a 1pm pick up with a 5pm return the following day is only charged as one day, not two days. We wrote about the Hertz / Platinum 4 hour grace period here.

The Platinum Card also comes with full car hire insurance with no obligation to pay for the rental via American Express. You can refuse any attempts to sell you additional insurance at pick up. This benefit has substantial value if you rent on a regular basis.

You can find more details on the two Platinum cards, and apply, in our full reviews linked below. You can apply here for the personal card and here for the business card.

OT: I’ve recently lost all AMEX Offers from both Gold Credit & Charge cards, as well as the SPG. Any suggestions on how to improve that?

    • John says:

What do you mean by lost?

    • meta says:

Nothing you can do apart from churning cards. I’ve had same issues and others have reported the same here before. Few had success by creating a completely new online account, but it didn’t work for me. Amex CS didn’t even look into it properly. I guess this is more common as every month there is one or two reports of this. Amex should really check what’s going on…

    • fivebobbill says:

Could be just a glitch, mine and the missus offers have been unexpectedly disappearing, then reappearing for about a month or so now, across all our Amex cards.

      • fivebobbill says:

        * sorry, badly worded. Offers have been reappearing after a day or so, but this has been happening intermittently across all our Amex cards over the period of a month or so…

  • sayling says:

OT: Airbus announced they will stop manufacturing the A380. Seems a bit of a shame…

    • Shoestring says:

Not a shame for the shareholders of Airbus going forward, though. They could have kept production going for a bit longer but have realised an A380 customer with no A380 to buy will probably buy an A350 instead.

      • Mr(s) Entitled says:

You expecting BA to order a load of A350s in the near future?

        • Shoestring says:

There will be quite a few cut-price once-used A380s in pretty good nick on the market

  • John says:

Nationwide Simply Rewards is closing. Only managed to use it for £25 off £150 Amazon gift card and 10% off a Hilton in the past few years

    • Shoestring says:

You should have triggered a few supermarket offers 🙂

I have been using my Halifax debit card for small transactions in supermarkets other than Morrisons, Co-Op to trigger offers there – I reckon we can get £120 off £1200 on my council tax next fiscal (4x £30).

    • Rob says:

Onto this, covering over the weekend.

  • TripRep says:

Addison Lee are pretty expensive for LHR-LGW airport runs.

Anyone recommend a good quality exec transfer alternative for 2 adults & minimal luggage.?

    • Nigel the Pensioner says:

Perhaps a one way hire car rental for £1 may be available?

    • John says:

If minimal luggage why do you really need an exec transfer? Even flyertalk’s uncle T uses national express

      • sunguy says:

There is always the Gatwick Express then a taxi from Victoria to Paddington and the Heathrow Express…..

Though, I tend to agree that if you have enough time, the National Express bus is probably easiest….

Uber or minicabit are also quite reasonable……

  • Crafty says:

OT: What’s the current consensus on Conrad Koh Samui, from recent visitors? Worth my 95,000 points per night? We have a 2 year old daughter if that helps inform your view.

Recent reviews online look a bit ambivalent compared to, say, Ritz-Carlton Langkawi (where we just stayed), which is why I’m hesitating.

    • Alex W says:

Don’t know about Conrad but we stayed at IC Koh Samui with a 7 month old, it was very good. There were no lifts, but you can just ring up and get driven in a golf buggy to wherever you want to go.

    • FlyingChris says:

We really enjoyed the Conrad when we were there for 4 nights in 2017. Huge villas with a private pool and incredible views. Breakfast & afternoon complementary drinks for Gold members. In theory waiting for the golf buggies to transport you around was a bit slow and some might say it’s quite far from the rest of the island – but neither bothered us too much when the hard product was so good.

    • Jtz says:

You might be waiting at times for a buggy, depends how often you will need it and where your villa is also.
      Not sure on kids facilities.
Loved my stay there, would definitely recommend booking their trips beforehand because they got booked quite quickly.
Food was a good and a range of restaurants to try out.

    • BJ says:

Personally I wouldn’t go to Samui at all, regardless of hotel.

      • Luthar says:

        Why is that BJ?

        • mike says:

something tells me BJ prefers phuket

        • Andy says:

          Pattaya? Haha

        • BJ says:

Too develpoed, too much booze and loud music, not enough to do if you get bored with the latter and the beach, if you need to get off the island in a hurry for any reason you need to think boat and bus as planes are usually fully booked.

        • BJ says:

@Mike, Phuket is ok. I prefer Patthalung and Songkhla provinces..

@Andy, I’ve only ever been to Pattaya for the fireworks, you and others can make of that what you like, I don’t give a …

        • Lady London says:

Oh no! I am going into mourning.

Such a lovely aircraft. Now we shall have the ghastly smaller A350 with its ridiculous foot cubbies instead….

    • TripRep says:

Friends went to Koh Samui in 2018, said it was great, but (considering its the same redemption cost) not a patch on the Conrad Rangali, which they’ve rebooked for 3 weeks at the end of this year. (He has stacks of HH pts)

      • mike says:

haha, there it is triprep. predictable, but brilliant nonetheless

      • BJ says:

…if you like even more boring than Samui, you have a point 🙂

      • FlyingChris says:

I don’t think Rangali is exactly a fair comparison. Yes they are both 95k HH points, but completely different ‘value’ propositions depending on your budget. Considering the $500pp seaplane and the £££ F&B cost mean you’re looking at 2-3k in expenses just to get there & eat, before adding on any activity costs (also £££).

Meanwhile Koh Samui has ‘reasonably’ priced food (expensive by Thai standards, but a fraction of the price of the Maldives), can easily be reached by a quick and cheap intra-Asia flight from other interesting SE Asia destinations (making it a great multi-destination trip) and you aren’t locked into just staying at the resort and can eat at a local restaurant (if you have a car/taxi).

  • Dave Barron says:

Apologies if previously advised….but my Amex Gold card has an offer with Emirates showing today, spend £800 by end of March and get £100 back.

Hopefully useful to someone (but not me!)

  • Nigel the Pensioner says:

Im pretty sure that you can get Heathroiw Reward points by buying tickets from the Heathrow Express App as well as on line…?

    • Rob says:

Yes you can – I define online as including the app.

      • G Flyer says:

The dedicated HEX ticket machines at Paddington (and presumably LHR too) also allow you to add your Heathrow Rewards number at time of purchase.

  • SimonW says:

O/T – I booked a prepaid deal with Hertz for a rental in Florida in April. I may have been on the Hertz Aussie site by mistake. I got the email confirm, but my Amex hasnt been charged. Does it usually take a while to come through?

    • Rash says:

Should be showing as pending at the least on your Amex, Hertz usually charge within a couple of days

      • SimonW says:

This was my thought. But i have an email confirm, and its showing in my Hertz account. I’ll wait a couple more days. Though not sure what to do after that anyway!

    • Charlieface says:

      Very by mistake, huh.
Last time I did this, the Hertz rental desk guy asked how I did it. I said simple- go to the top of the page, change country to Aus. He says I shouldn’t have done it coz it’s only for Aus residents, I say why not, there’s nothing in the T&Cs about it. And that was the end of it.

      • SimonW says:

Hahaha. I was just going to say I was in Australia when I made the booking if they ever ask. Never been challenged before.

      • John says:

Get an Australian driving licence and they won’t ask questions any more

      • SimonW says:

I dont think the guy at Miami airport cares either way. With the gold canopy service there too, you can just jump in your allotted car and drive out. The guy at the barrier definitely doesnt care.

    • Andy says:

Does the Aussie website have better deals?

      • SimonW says:

I think depends where you are looking to hire. But for a Florida hire it was £360 (charged in $Aussie) v £480 on UK site.

      • Rob says:

With the Amex Plat CDP it is massively cheaper, especially for UK rentals

      • Bagoly says:

        They charge less insurance.
        (presumably Australian laws require less)

      • Mikee says:

Same use of Oz website and Amex CDP. Just doing a 10 day rental with a 1-way LAX to LAS drop off….cost me just $238. With Gold Canopy service using my Presidents Circle membership (status matched from my Avis President’s Club membership via Amex Platinum) meant I could choose premium cars for the price of a mid size. Ended up with a Mercedes GLC300.

        • SimonW says:

How did you status match that Mikee? Amex Plat only gives me basic Avis membership or 5 star at Hertz….
