New Avios redemptions …. Finnair adds flights to Busan whilst Iberia adds Cairo

Finnair announced yesterday that it is launching a new route to Busan in South Korea next year.

This will be the first direct flight to Busan from anywhere in Europe.  As Finnair is a British Airways partner in the oneworld alliance, you will be able to earn and spend Avios on this route, and earn British Airways Executive Club tier points.

The first flight will depart on 30th March.  Amazingly, this will be Finnair’s 20th Asian destination, capitalising on the fact that Helsinki is ‘on the way’ to Asia from many places in Europe and so a convenient place to connect.

There will be three services per week, using a brand new A350.  Connections will be available via Finnair’s existing UK routes from London, Edinburgh and Manchester.

My review of the impressive Finnair A350 is here.

Mena House Cairo

…. and Iberia is launching Cairo

Iberia announced a new route to Cairo yesterday.  Flights from Madrid will start on 2nd March and operate four days per week.

It will be an almost five hour flight on a shorthaul A319 aircraft, so it isn’t a hugely attractive alternative to the British Airways direct flight which uses a long haul Boeing 787 aircraft.  There isn’t much arbitrage when looking at an Avios redemption either.

However, if you want to go to Cairo on Avios and there is no British Airways availability showing, you do now have a new option.

  • Lee says:

    Spend £2,200 get 1,500 points.

Only on the main card, which I assume means that any spending on the second card will not count.

    • stevenhp1987 says:

The Terms & Conditions clearly state that it includes all supplementary cardholders.

“Only spend on the Card and any supplementary Cards attached to this Account (including an American Express Card loaded into a mobile payment wallet) to which the offer is saved, is eligible for the offer.”

  • Grant says:

    OT, sorry.

I’m about to book a hire car with Hertz. Do I need to pay with my Plat to get the CDW or can I use any Amex? I’ve used the Plat CDP code.

  • S says:

Still no offer on any of my MR cards.

    • Nate1309 says:

same 🙁 plat being dumped if they dont improve the offers soon

    • fivebobbill says:

Me too, getting sick of this now, nothing useful since the 200 off 600 travel spend last year.
38 random offers of useless crap every week since.
I’m afraid if it doesn’t improve by renewal next month it’s gone, had enough…

      • Lady London says:

At £600 per year now I suspect more Amex card holders are going to follow you and dump it too. @fivebobbill!

It seems referrals, and the odd offers like the £200 off £600 for travel spend, and especially Shop Small, are the main reasons for keeping the personal Amex Plat.

  • Dawn says:

Apologies if my post appears twice…..something went wrong!

Ref Cairo – I saw BA now have flat beds on that route – how long has that been? Cost was too much and no reward seats. My eventual destination is Hurghada but I don’t like flying Easy Jet. I’ve ended up booking them though as I got the flights as soon as they were released. Would much prefer to fly BA though.

    • Charlieface says:

I think since they bought BMI in 2012, because they use their mid-haul A321s

    • Clive says:

Be careful as I read that due to the 787 problems they were putting 320s on that route for a while

  • Olly says:

IHG Ambassador……. I received an email yesterday offering me the Ambassador program for $200 getting a 15,000 point bonus “for being a loyal customer”. I’ve just got Spire from the Status match and am wondering what people’s views are to whether it’s worth it since the change in benefits?

    • Rob says:

The voucher is not enough to swing it, in my view. If you can use the free weekend night voucher (which is a BOGOF) then you absolutely get value. If you don’t and you have Spire, it doesn’t swing it.

      • Olly says:

Thanks Rob, We’ve got a trip to Davos in August, where they have a stunning IC. We wandered in shortly after it opened and got followed around by about for members of staff… weird. I should have added that I do have a reward night voucher from the IHG CC and wondered if I could tag both the nights or if it had to be a paid BOGOF?

        • Lyn says:

The paid night has to be a Friday or Saturday, and the following night is the free (BOGOF) night.

Emyr Thomas might be able to book the IC Davos for you (at the normal refundable rate) with extra benefits such as lounge access if they have one, so it could be worth comparing the rates for the dates you are interested in. The AMB W/E rate is often quite a lot higher than the normal refundable rate.

Either way you should be able to tag on the IHG credit card free night at the end of the booking for a 3 night stay.

    • Graeme says:

Does this still extend your Spire for a year by taking out Ambassador?

    • Navara says:

IHG Status match in now extended to 26th July.

  • L Allen says:

Still don’t have the Amex offer on any of my cards! Maybe I spend too much and its not a good investment for them 🙂

  • Jim says:

OT: Taxes, Fees and Charges- wise.

Just asked for two quotes for taxes fees and charges, both for this trip:

    Out: Inverness – Miami

    Back: Orlando – Edinburgh

1st quote out First, Back Business: £509

2nd quote out First, Back Premium Economy: £509

Although the number of Avios is obviously different for each I’d expected TFC to be different too (assuming the upper two premium cabins would pay more).

Is it the case that they are the same regardless of cabin?

    • AJA says:

APD is the same for WTP, CW and F. Only lower for WT.

      • Jim says:

Don’t think those charges include APD as I’m starting from Inverness though.

        • AJA says:

If it’s not APD what are the fees for? That sounds incredibly expensive. Have you tried a quote coming back in WT? See if that reduces the charges. I know you wouldn’t actually travel in WT but it would confirm if there is a difference similar to the APD charges.

          • guesswho2000 says:

Fees will almost certainly be YQ (fuel surcharge).

          • Lady London says:

YQ equating to ‘Money that’s not required for any tax, APD or airport fee, so money that goes straight into British Airways’s pocket’. aka massive ” carrier greed” charge

        • Scott says:

So what fee components do you expect to differ? I can’t speak for WTP, but certainly between Business and First, TF&Cs are identical.

          • Doug M says:

I think this has changed, and that F now has a higher YQ than CW.

          • Jim says:

I don’t think they are. The Government, authority and airport charges are the same in each class but I think the BA Carrier Charge is supposed to be different. For example when I look at a one way Orlando – London the Carrier Charge element of the fees are £140.30 in Economy, £180.30 in Premium Economy and £480.90 in Business. That’s why I’m surprised that the quote I was given on the phone was the same for both options.

          • Jonathan says:

There is now a YQ difference between J & F for One Way or Return flights originating in US whereas ex UK they are the same. For this reason using the calculator on BA.com is not always accurate. My experience is there is a £100 difference each way between PE & J for UK bookings. Basically you need to call and ask for a breakdown to be e-mailed.

          • Jim says:

Called up and asked but had to abandon after they’d been trying to work out the breakdown of the charges for 40 mins. Have emailed them to see if they can give me a breakdown that way. Thanks all for input.

          • Lady London says:

            See above.
There is no difference in tax.
British Airways is just taking more money from you.

Not unreasonable, but the way they present it the passenger who is paying, if they are not very savvy may well think the whole amount is various kinds of ‘tax’.

  • Shoestring says:

Purchase or give away Avios from July 10th to 25th and collect 50% extra Avios. Also, we are increasing the purchase limit up to 200,000 Avios. IB. Works out at 300000 Avios for £3239 or 1.08p/ point. Smaller quantities similar/ not quite so good.

    • Russ says:

Are we likely to get a better offer do you think? Not really expecting another Iberia promotion as good as last year but don’t want to buy if something else is likely to turn up.

      • Shoestring says:

        good as it gets

        • Flying Misfit says:

Although if this was offered by BA (granted unlikely) and possible to stack with the offer on BAPP card for a total of 40,000 at £335 plus the additional 500 odd for spending, then would come down close to @0.83. In this post apocalyptic avios world, still not great but better than most slim pickings

        • Russ says:

Hmnn and I have amex Gold so should pick up extra MR for that purchase. Not really short of avios at the moment but I can always find ways of spending the critters.
