Which InterContinental hotels give FREE club lounge access if you book via a ‘preferred partner’ agent?

You may not know that you can get free access to club lounges at some InterContinental hotels if you book via a ‘preferred partner’ or Virtuoso travel agent.

The idea for this article came when I was replying to a comment from a reader last week.  I thought it was worth broadening out because IHG / InterContinental does not offer lounge access to top-tier members of its reward programme.

(IHG does offer InterContinental lounge access to Royal Ambassador cardholders, but this requires a high level – into US$ five figures it seems – of annual spend across InterContinental and potentially Kimpton and Regent to qualify.)

If you’re Hilton Honors Diamond, you get lounge access.  If you’re Marriott Bonvoy Platinum Elite or Titanium Elite, you get lounge access.  If you are IHG Rewards Club Spire Elite, you get a free chocolate bar and 600 bonus points at check-in at most European hotels …..

Luckily, there is a way around this.  A handful of top InterContinental hotel are part of the Virtuoso luxury hotels network.  These can only be booked by a closed network of hand-picked travel agents, of which our hotel booking partner Emyr Thomas is one of the few in the UK.

The following InterContinental hotels will give you guaranteed lounge access if you book them via Emyr (details here).

The price will usually be Best Flexible Rate.  If you were booking a flexible rate anyway then this is a genuinely free extra bonus.  If you would otherwise book Advanced Purchase (non-refundable) then you will pay a little more but you are getting a substantial list of extra benefits which should easily offset the cost.

For clarity, you WILL earn IHG Rewards Club points on these rates and, if you are also InterContinental Ambassador, my experience is that the hotels will often upgrade you an additional level to reflect this.

These InterContinental hotels offer free lounge access on Virtuoso agent bookings:

I stayed at the Crowne Plaza London City (by Blackfriars) this weekend with the Mrs and little one. With my platinum status we got a room upgrade to the club floor and also club access. So had free breakfast, access to the lounge during the day etc. CP’s have been good at providing the club lounge access each time I’ve stayed either in the UK or abroad.

    Merry Christmas everyone.
Hi Rob, you mention the special benefits at another 80+ IC hotels. As far as I can see there are 216 IC hotels. Is there a list of the 80+ where this applies as this would make a difference when booking. I presume this is similar to hyatt prive. Whilst hyatt don’t publicise a list it is widely available on the blogs and therefore is easy to consider when scouting out a destination.

Kind of on topic. I’m a spire ambassador. Most came back from Doha where I used my weekend certificate that comes with ambassador status. That gave great value – £300 or so saved for second weekend night for a club room.

We landed using 2 for 1 BA at 6am. Went to hotel and they gave club access to have breakfast. Whilst we waited they could see we were tired and one person didn’t seem to care and just said room wasn’t ready. Another person came and said she could give us a standard room for free to have a nap whilst our room was being prepared. Excellent service.

When our room was ready it was on the top floor and a massive suite.

Food in the lounge was excellent. After breakfast they have afternoon tea and evening canapés.

We ended up extending our stay by one day using points (35,000) and they allowed us to stay in the luxury suite.

    All in a wonderful result.

Worth noting that there may be a minimum stay requirement for these rates. E.g. if you only book one night, you may not qualify for the free lounge access etc.

2 recent stays at CP Newcastle. Both nights ( one a Sunday night ) hotel was dead. As a Spire Ambassador no upgrade from a Standard room. Went on the app and showed at least 5 King or Queen Club and junior suites available. Reception had to phone to get Club room released! First night club room given but no lounge access and second relented and access included.
    Very disappointed at hassle involved.
