    Morning!

OT Question related to GCs at Morrisons…did you do your large purchase all in one go? And did you get any raised eyebrows or awkward questions?
Raised eyebrows I’m happy to ignore, but I don’t want to be denied sale for giving the ‘wrong’ answer.
I’ve dabbled in this previously, but was thinking of going for something a bit more substantial 🙂

    • Shoestring says:

£2000 in 1 go, no raised eyebrows at all – use the kiosk though (would be my advice) as if you tried £2000 at the till any cautious cashier is going to call over the duty mgr who would then be ‘forced’ to question you etc

you can do it all at self-serve if you like, though that was always going to be too fiddly for me when there was a perfectly good kiosk cashier a few metres away

it’s not as if there’s anything to be shy about, M’s are welcoming the extra sales

      • Shoestring says:

also, I know from past experience that Amex fraud alert clicks in on about your 4th similar transaction, so by buying everything in 1 go you won’t have this problem

easily resolved, though – you get a fraud alert text and just have to reply by SMS to reset the card

weirdly, I could do plenty of amazon ones. Two john lewis ones needed managerial approval though.

        • Lady London says:

If I was doing that much I think I’d make it 1998 including a few groceries. Just in case there could be triggers of all sorts on the 2K. Ditto for 1K I’d do 998 incl groceries. Not much loss and avoidance of an obvious trigger point.

      • SteveD says:

Thanks, I might do one at self-serve and see how bad it is. I have to drive right past nearly every day so it’s not much effort to do it over a few visits if I get cold feet!

Oh, scrap that, just seen your post about fraud alerts…I guess different days for different amounts would reduce that likelihood though.

      • Shoestring says:

not yet pending, I asked other people and it seems they probably should eventually post but we need to be patient

      • Tom1 says:

I have had one email on 26th feb for a transaction I made on 23rd.
Transactions I made on 25th have not produced any emails.

Japan’s Hokkaido Declares State of Emergency as Virus Erupts
Japan’s northern island of Hokkaido will go quiet this weekend after its governor declared a state of emergency as the rapid spread of the coronavirus infected more than 60 people in a matter of weeks.
Residents should refrain from leaving their house this weekend, Governor Naomichi Suzuki said on Japanese broadcaster NHK. The state of emergency will remain until March 19, he said. Hokkaido, a popular tourist destination among foreigners, has become Japan’s breeding ground for the deadly coronavirus, leaving at least two people dead.

Crowne Plaza Yas Island and the W are on lockdown, Chris Froome and Mark Cavendish included. Free fortnight for a lucky few. At times like this, held in solitary confinement, you would be glad you had an upgrade with a view. It is worth having status guys.

    Bring on the deals.

OT, Searching for KLM flights on Virgin. I can’t seem to find direct flights as it always routes me via Heathrow. Tried searching ABZ – AMS – LAX and it always routes me via LHR. Even when you search AMS – LAX it routes you via LHR. Anyone got any simple solutions for searching KLM reward flights on Virgin?

    • marcw says:

Maybe there’s no availability. Remember KLM/AirFrance use a dynamic redemption system, so only a small limited amount of seats are available to partners.

  • Boi says:

OT: where is best place to credit avis rental at the moment? I am about to do booking for 8 day rental in canada

    • DaveL says:

Unless your company is paying, you might want to consider booking via a third party site such as Canadian affair – price was about half of booking avis direct for me. They honoured the benefits (I got a upgraded to an awesome Dodge Charger) but obviously no points via this route…
Then, you can spend the cash you saved buying some cheap avios from Iberia 😬

  • Yorkieflyer says:

Quick datapoint, Avios from economist offer arrived after purchase on 30 January

  • AndyK says:

OT. DragonPass app on iPhone asks to be updated on startup and shuts straight after. I have the latest version making the app unusable. Anyone else has this problem?

    • AlexT says:

I updated the app via the AppStore and it works alright for me. Just had to log in again…

      • AndyK says:

Thanks. AppStore tells me I have the latest version. Probably need to wait a little.
Can be a problem if you need to buy visits urgently

        • Lady London says:

You can phone them if you’re stuck they’re quite friendly.

          • BJ says:

OT @LadyLondon and others, 5th March is World Book Day so perhaps we will see good kindle unlimited etc deals then.

          • Lady London says:

            Ta BJ

          • Lady London says:

@Shoestring I’m a big fan of Anthony Horowitz so I will make a point of sourcing that prequel. He wrote Foyle’s War which is my all time fave TV series. Sadly was not able to share this with my partner who would also have loved it.

          • Shoestring says:

£2.50 off £10 at Ebay today, you need to activate it first, though

          • BJ says:

Will give him a go then, time I read something different.

          • Harry T says:

            @Lady London
Horowitz is a terrific author – read his Alex Rider books growing up.

          • Shoestring says:

can I suggest that if buying a ‘very good’ copy on ebay, you go for the hardback version, which is just 25p more or something like that – it’s a beautiful book to hold in your hands, very handsome indeed

  • Anna says:

OT – IHG Spire elite. A previous article states that spend on the IHG MC counts toward aspire status, however I’ve spent £17k on mine this card year but my IHG account is only showing 9k qualifying points. Does the type of spend (e.g. via Curve) have any bearing on this?

    • Leigh says:

Just checked my IHG account: all as expected – including via Curve spending.

    • Phil G says:

just a reminder its calendar year and not card year for points towards spire if that helps

      • Anna says:

Ah that might explain it, this is the first time I have actually checked! I have some more spend lined up for the summer which should help.
So, if I qualify in August, for example, would I then have spire until the end of 2021?

    • Secret Squirrel says:

Curve spend has always been qualifying for me. A lot of people get caught out by the bonus points which are not Q but you stated 17k spend so I’m baffled.

      • Mark says:

I’ve found the opposite. On the Premium card recent spend via Curve not only did all the points come through as Elite qualifying, but I got double points (4 per pound) for spend at both an IHG and Hilton property!

        That I was not expecting….

        • Kai says:

Yes, always get double points at any hotels plus Uber eats. Don’t ask me why…
