  • Save East Coast Rewards says:

Where’s the decent pictures? I only see a table and a seat back. I’m going to request a refund of my subscription 😂

  • Matt says:

OT – Have a short family holiday coming up to Miami next week.
Still relatively happy to go, but both I and my 3 year old have colds that are likely to still prevalent when we are flying. Not sure in the current environment how plane staff & US Customs might react to us – last thing I want is to be put in Quarantine as a result (possibly with some genuinely sick people), or just get unlucky with the hotel a-la Tenerife and face quarantine again…
Pre-paid flights with Virgin and they are not allowing date changes – thoughts?

    • Corona says:

Lemsip + Otrivine and act very normal

      • Shoestring says:

definitely act un-fluey at check in/ gate

the agents are trained to spot people with flu symptoms and stop them flying – this is standard policy, not new to coronavirus outbreak scare – but I’d imagine that if you roll up spluttering & coughing, there’s a decent chance you’d be refused boarding these days whereas before I don’t think the policy was enforced much

    • Nick says:

Human nature being what it is, you’ll certainly get some frowns, at the the very least, from fellow passengers on the plane if either of you start sneezing, and expect others to move away from you elsewhere, but especially at the hotel. Mind you, it’s a great way to grab a few sunloungers!

    • Andrew says:

It’s February or March, it’s the UK. It seems like a quarter of the Country has a cold. It’s normal.

Besides with a 3yo, they’ll have bounced back tomorrow morning. It’s you that will be on day 4 and blowing out thick and dark coloured filth. What’s your current temperature?

    • TGLoyalty says:

Unless you’ve have recently been to the list of areas that have had outbreaks then you wont find yourself in any sort of quarantine. A Cold is pretty common this time of year so is the odd sneeze or sniffle everyone is doing it.

Just be sensible but because of over reaction I’d ensure plenty of tissues, good hand sanitiser and something to dispose of waste in while travelling (plastic bag?) plus perhaps surface and hand wipes.

    • James says:

night and day tablets I have found to be the best help

    • Polly says:

Actifed tablets are the greatest thing. They really do dry up those symptoms. Pricey, but worth every penny.

  • Andrew says:

Perhaps “impeccable” in first, but decidedly tired in standard. The mood lighting hasn’t worked properly in ages, the videos looked like they were sourced from old VHS tapes, and everything else looked tired.

But understandable, under the passenger cabin things were getting very ropey indeed with a number of emergency withdrawals due to issues with the physical structure of the carriages.

  • AlexT says:

OT: I believe a couple of people reported being charged cash advance fees for Revolut top-ups by Barclaycard when the merchant code changed in Jan this year. Were the charges instant, appearing alongside the transaction, or did they take a couple of days to appear?

I’m asking because I topped up GBP 100 the other day, and the transaction appears to have settled in my account (no longer pending), and I haven’t been charged anything yet. Checked on both the Barclays app and the website, and neither lists the merchant code or the transaction type the same way Virgin does…

    • paulm says:

What does the business type say on the app ? The ones I did before the charges started show as “Fi – Merch & services” which may indicate if the MCC has changed back.

      • jc says:

Barclaycard is Visa, isn’t it? So should be back to the original MCC (Financial – Merchandise and Services as the previous commenter mentioned) but you can always double check with Revolut live chat.

      • fivebobbill says:

Yes, good question paulm. I did a Revolut top-up on 18th Feb and was charged a cash advance fee, although I believe this was before these latest developments. However @AlexT, although the Hilton B’card website doesn’t list the MCC, it does list the transaction “Category” if you go to the more detailed info under “View more transactions”.
My top-up on 18th was categorised as “Cash Like Transaction”, if it’s changed back to “Financial – Merchandise and Services” then you’re elected!

      • AlexT says:

Fi – Merch & Services, so I guess the merchant code reversal has worked

    • MarkH says:

I did a test top-up of £100 on 22nd with Hilton Bcard and no cash advance fees have posted.

Previously they had posted at the same as the transaction moved out of pending.

      • AlexT says:

Thanks. Between this confirmation and the fact the old MCC code is back, it looks like Barclaycard loading of Revolut is safe for the time being.

  • BJ says:

OT: Summary from BBC on latest BA cancellations. More details will obviously be on BA coronavirus page-

British Airways to cancel some Italy, Singapore, South Korea flights
The airline carrier said it would cancel:

56 roundtrip flights from Heathrow and Gatwick airports to several destinations in Italy, including Milan, Bologna, Venice and Turin, between 14 – 28 March
Flights to Seoul will now be every other day
BA will cancel six return flights from Heathrow to Singapore every other day until 15 March – there will still be one daily flight

    • Lady London says:

I will take a bet quite a few of the flight cancellations make sense financially for the airlines regardless of the virus.

  • Marcw says:

Rob, of your hotel points cancellation in Berlin refundable? It looks like ITB is not happening (not confirmed yet).

    • Rob says:

If not there are worse places to spend a couple of days!

However, as the City owns the Messe and will therefore lose a fortune by cancelling, it seems unlikely. Most exhibitors will already be there.

      • Rhys says:

It also doesn’t exactly strike a note of confidence if consumers realise that travel companies are cancelling an expo in a fairly virus-free city/country but are still being stingy with refunds/reroutes etc!

      • marcw says:

Events get cancelled, regardless. MWC in Barcelona got cancelled. Now the Geneva International Motor Show is cancelled. ITB is taking a decision today.

        • Lady London says:

Mobile World Congress has heavy, heavy Chinese and other Asia attendees though as China is supplying the majority of phones, computers and other Comms equipment now.

I’m very disappointed as normally this is the season to look out for exciting new product news from MWC and, to a lesser extent when it happens, CES.

      • Roy says:

The federal government may yet force Berlin’s hand.

The Swiss government has just banned gatherings of more than 1,000 people, forcing the cancellation of the Geneva International Motor Show.

Yes, people will lose money. People will invoke force majeur provisions in contracts. It’s going to be messy. But less messy than the uncontrolled rapid spread of COVID-19.

      • Marcw says:

Unfortunately, you were wrong. ITB2020 has been cancelled.

  • Nick G says:

I give up with IHG still no bonus points from the x4 offer….They praise you for being a member but fail to deliver I find post stay….back to Hilton status I think

    • Lady London says:

Why not phone them in US Midwest opening hours after UK has closed and see if a US agent can do better?

      • The Original David says:

They told me today (by email) that the bonus should appear 3 weeks after the stay.

    • Harry T says:

The one time they didn’t credit my points correctly, I filled in a missing points form and they credited them within 24 hours. I had a similar experience with Bonvoy. I have no idea why everyone moans about IHG and Marriott IT and CS.

  • Boi says:

@BJ were you able to get Monese to increase your limits (how)? I have hit £5K and really getting withdrawal symptoms waiting.
Do they care how you use the funds when asking…..

    • BJ says:

No, that was just a joke at Mark2 hitting the limit. That takes some doing, at least 21 transactions a month now. I have difficulty motivating myself to go to the co-op once a week.

      • Boi says:

coop literally next building from work, the guy there even knows me by now and taught me how to do top ups quicker.

    • Kai says:

They lose money every time you top up. I can’t imagine why they’d increase the limit as no normal person would need to top up 5k with cash every month..
