British Airways evouchers for cancelled flights are arriving – and it’s a mess

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

You will remember that British Airways has been allowing people to cancel forthcoming flights in return for a British Airways travel voucher for a number of weeks.

It has also been ‘encouraging’ people with cancelled flights to take a voucher instead of their legal right to a cash refund, but that is another story.

The vouchers have started to arrive.  This is what they look like:

British Airways coronavirus voucher

Can you see the problem?

You are not told how much your voucher is for.

When you cancel your booking for a voucher, you are not told how much you are getting back.  Everyone assumed that the voucher would come with a note of how much it was for and a full breakdown of how it had been calculated.

It seems not.

The only way to find out how much your British Airways voucher is worth is to ring the overstretched call centres.

Even if you call, I imagine that the only thing they can tell you is the total.  I doubt they can see the calculation to explain how they arrived at that number.  You don’t know what fees you may or may not have been charged, and so you can’t tell whether those fees are correct.

There aren’t even full instructions for using the voucher.

We know that you need to ring the call centre to use it.  It doesn’t explain:

whether the voucher is transferable (I honestly don’t know)

whether it can be used against multiple trips (it can – the references to ‘part payment’ in the email are misleading, to the extent that you do not need to spend more than your original trip cost in order to use it)

The voucher doesn’t even include the expiry date.

In a few months time, you may have lost track of the date you were originally meant to fly.  It is also isn’t clear if you need to take outbound flight by the 12-month cut-off or complete your entire trip.

I know that the whole British Airways team is under a lot of pressure at the moment, but none of this stuff requires any great insight to put together.

If anything, it requires a certain sort of genius to send out a voucher which accidentally (?) misses out ALL of the relevant information on:

  • what it is worth
  • what deductions have been made
  • when it expires, and
  • who it can be used for

To be honest, given that ba.com actually has boxes where you input voucher codes, even the lack of online functionality is unacceptable.

  • Nick Burch says:

To give BA credit – they are answering the phones quickly, and being helpful!

We were set to fly to Aus with Qatar at Easter, obviously not happening! Can’t get through to Qatar on the phone, no free rebooking to the new dates we want in August, only no change fee but several hundred quid each in fare difference. Since original flight ex-EU is cancelled, have asked via the webform for an EU-261 full refund. Rang BA this morning to book with avios + vouchers instead. Took 11 minutes from ringing to having avios seats booked on our first choice days. Very friendly and helpful agent, quick call, all done. Can’t fault BA on that one!

  • Tim Iles says:

Nick Burch, pleased to hear BA sorted your issues. Would appreciate if you could share the successful phone number. I have been trying to get through for 2 weeks, have spent many hours on the phone without success. Trying to to get a refund of seat booking fees for a St Lucia flight that was cancelled 15 days ago, also an earlier hotel cancellation. I am now looking to do an online cancellation of Avios flights to Canada in September. Manage My Booking page advises this is only possible by phone call. Meanwhile BA Contact page says “Please don’t call or message unless you’re travelling in the next 72 hours so we can help those needing urgent rebooking” Seems like BA are keen to hang to as much passengers’ cash as long possible by all means available. Not impressed!

  • Paul says:

In normal operations they cannot calculate fares and so I would have no faith in these vouchers and even less in BA not ripping you off once this is over.
I have previously written about them extorting over £1300 from us when we had to change a flight. It should have been £300 and it took letter to the CEO to resolve.
    DO NOT TRUST BA

  • David Langhorne says:

I have booked flights which were part-paid in Avios. Will these Avios be credited back to my account or be included in my vouchers when they eventually materialise ? I have tried phoning for clarification but eventually gave up. Having scanned through the minefield of BA’s websites I am non the wiser.

  • Anna says:

The domestic leg of my return flight from GCM has been cancelled, MMB directs me to the voucher page when I try to cancel the whole thing. I paid £180 for seat selection, would that be included in the value of the voucher?

  • Zsolt Szabo says:

I completely agree, this is a mess, shame to BA… All those low-cost airlines, they have better web services…

Surprisingly, BA *does* have an eVoucher payment option on their website, but it only accepts vouchers starting with “125-82”, and these new vouchers are NOT like that (mines start with 125-21)… Calling is not a real option, the call centres are overused and booking via call center takes ages (and costs an extra 10 GBP, btw 🙂 )

I guess they want to fix their prices before making these vouchers actually useable… Shame on them.

  • Lynn Anderson says:

This is disgraceful. I have three future travel vouchers and would like to know what the amounts are so that (a) I can check the amounts against my records and (b) know how much they are before I start searching for flights. The least BA could do is make the vouchers usable online Now I have to call and wait on the phone for who knows how long. Very badly planned.

  • Debra gunning says:

I also have 2 voucher codes prefix 125-21 therefore you cannot book flights online, once you have accepted the vouchers sadly.
Ba shouldn’t supply vouchers that can’t yet use.
Ba please can u help me & all others in this situation
    Thank you

    • Rob says:

Yes, you need to call to use them. Easy enough if you get through ….
