American Express is rolling out ‘compensation’ deals for Platinum cardholders.

For holders of the personal The Platinum Card, it is fairly simple – American Express is giving you £100.

If you have American Express Business Platinum, this article explains what you are getting instead.

Do I get £100 in cash?

No.  Well, sort of.

£100 free for American Express Platinum cardholders

In order to receive your free £100, you need to spend £100 by 27th August at any combination of:

  • Marks & Spencer
  • Waitrose & Partners
  • Deliveroo
  • Harvey Nichols
  • Apple (online only)

100% of your spending at these shops is returned in the form of statement credit, up to £100 per card.  For clarity, the £100 cap is NOT per shop.  It is cumulative across all five shops above.

What are the restrictions?

There are some, but they are not hugely onerous:

  • M&S exclusions: Bank and Energy services, Bureau de change, Opticians and Petrol stations
  • Waitrose & Partners exclusions: Cellar, Florist, Garden, Pet, Cookery school, foreign currency, Gift Section
  • Harvey Nichols exclusions: International delivery, gift cards, vouchers and dining within restaurant
  • Apple exclusions: Apple iTunes, Apps and Apple Music, Apple Search Ads, Apple Finance and Gift Cards

Here is a key thing to remember.  Waitrose gift vouchers can be used at John Lewis department stores, either online or instore.  If you can get to a Waitrose store but do not want to spend £100 on shopping, you can buy a gift card which should trigger the cashback.  You can then spend this at John Lewis at your convenience.

Do I need to register for this offer?

Yes.

You MUST register your card for this offer.

To register, go to the ‘Offers’ section of your online statement page for your American Express Platinum card.  Scroll down until you see this promotion and click ‘Save To Card’.  You’re good to go!

Virtually all Platinum charge cardholders have this offer.  A small minority do not – it is not clear why.

Can I apply for The Platinum Card now and get this offer?

It isn’t clear.  It runs until 27th August so you would have plenty of time.

However, it depends on American Express adding the deal to the ‘Offers’ tab of your online statement page and we cannot be certain that this will happen for new applicants.  I’m sure we will find out soon enough.

Our full review of The Platinum Card is here if you want to find out more about the card.  You can apply here.

Conclusion

This is clearly a ‘no brainer’ offer for holders of The Platinum Card.  Ensure that you register your card now.  Remember that you have until 27th August to do the relevant spending.

  • Doug says:

If it seems too good to be true!
    Is indeed a targeted offer.

  • TonyT says:

Not in my “Offers” either! Amex need to up the ante on these Plat cards, give something tangible for “All” not targeted.

  • Richard Allen says:

Not showing in mine either. Maybe it’s because we shop in Waitrose already & they don’t want to give away the money too easily.

    • Sandgrounder says:

Did you try this morning, or recently? They might have pulled the offer temporarily until they refine their list of eligible cards. I am hoping those who saved it in time will still benefit… I think I will walk down to M&S when I finish work and see what happens.

  • Jonathan says:

Did those not targeted take advantage of the 15/20k MR retention offers? I’ve got this on my Plat & 2 supplementaries but hadn’t got round to calling up for the MR offer yet.

    • Sandrounder says:

I received 15k and it was on my Plat & supps

    • Sean says:

i have it on my plat and supp and also received 2*20,000 MRs

      • Simon says:

Sean, is this to say you got a 20K MR retention on BOTH primary AND supp cards? i.e. 2 retention offers feeding into one MR account?

    • Jonathan says:

Now disappeared from all 3 cards, kicking myself for not saving earlier but it did prompt me to finally call up & pocket 20k MR in 5 mins!

      • BuyEMExternalBonds says:

Looks like an error then, maybe some lucky ones ran to Waitrose and stocked up on gift cards 🙂

All the numpties calling amex to confirm the offer no doubt

    • Simone says:

      Did you call for this?

  • Andrew says:

I think those that aren’t seeing it right now to save, it will be back on the main card only soon – they have probably pulled it from all cards and then need to reapply it to the main cards only, rather than being able to just pull it from the supp cards.

  • BuyEMExternalBonds says:

    Saw this on another website

“Went on the chat and called Amex and both agents said it’s £100 for the whole account, not £100 per card even if it does show on supplementary cards.

I have it saved on my supplementary card + my partner’s main card and according to them, it will be up to £100 regardless of which card(s) we use, but NOT £100*the number of supplementary cards linked to the same main account.”

absolute stupid to contact amex in the first place – why not just test yourself and stay quiet

    • A says:

Agree it was rather foolish to flag this to Amex. But if you’ve saved it to your supplementary card, you should be safe – the T&Cs for the offer are explicit that it is max of “£100 statement credit per Card”, not per account or other.

    • Sundar says:

Yeah, down and low, mention only in comments. DO NOT call Amex cust care 🙄

    • Crafty says:

+1, could have spoiled this for everyone else, very bad behaviour.

  • Ronster says:

    Good afternoon everyone

    Hope your all well.

Just got of the online chat with Amex since I was trying to add the Platinum offer but could not see it available.

The gentleman told me and I quote:-
“I got an update from our team and the offer has been taken down for a maintenance because supplementary card holders could see that offer online while it’s only meant for main card holder. So, this will go live again and Platinum card members will either receive email communication or will see it online from 29th and 30th May”.

Based on what was said to me, If you’ve managed to add the credits to your supplementary cards, before they’ve been removed, be very careful, since they might not be honoured.

    Good luck everyone

    Ronster

    • Andrew says:

It’s like IB90K all over again!

    • Alex says:

Thanks Ronster, that’s nice of you, and useful information! I’ll check at the weekend then 🙂

      • Ronster says:

        Good evening Alex

Glad I was able to help in a small way.

        Ronster

        • Polly says:

Tnx also, look forward to an Amex email then, as we use Waitrose a lot, near by. Nice to hear from you too, haven’t heard from you in a while….

          • Ronster says:

            Good evening Polly.

Nice to hear from you too. Hope you and your family are well.

I am still around and always here to offer my small input, to help the HfP people.

I received my confirmation email this afternoon regarding the £100.00 credit.
So with 20,000MR points I received a week ago, I am happy with the direction that Amex is going to retain me as a customer.

Now I only need my British Airways Amex Premium Plus Card to give me BA silver status, with no FX charges and a 2-4-1 voucher that is valid throughout the whole oneworld network.

I would be very happy indeed, if that would materialise

            Kind regards

            Ronster

          • Polly says:

            Hi Ronster again,

Now wouldn’t that be a result with the BAPP card. God bless the days we got the CX gold with platinum card, which of course was silver. Think the way things are going BA want to reduce their silver holders not increase them…
But Amex could bring back our nice earning and referral bonus W/out the 24 mth wait….

  • Andrew Wells says:

Showed on my account earlier, so I have saved it. Received a 30k retention bonus previously on the card as well, so I am happy that Amex are trying to offset the cost of the card to some extent.
