London City Airport re-opens for flights tomorrow

Three months after it suspended flights, London City Airport is re-opening its (boarding) gates. Tomorrow, Sunday 21st June, will be its first day of operations.

Domestic service is set to resume first, with the first flight set to be BA3287 to the Isle of Man, operated by BA CityFlyer. This flight was temporarily operating from Heathrow whilst London City was closed.

More routes are due to follow in July, when Loganair and Eastern add several new domestic routes. CityFlyer routes to Ibiza, Florence, Málaga, Palma, Glasgow, Edinburgh and Dublin are also back on sale.

London City Airport reopens tomorrow

Robert Sinclair, Chief Executive, said:

“We have worked hard to create a safe environment at the airport, so they can get back to flying in confidence. At the same time, we have been careful not to sacrifice the speed through the airport which passengers have always valued and is now more important than ever.”

Like other airports, London City is doing its best to mitigate viral transmission. This includes the use of one-way systems, introduction of hand sanitiser stations, perspex screens at check-in desks and additional cleaning, including with long-life anti-microbial surface treatments. Automatic temperature screenings will also be implemented.

To maximise social distancing, only people with a valid ticket will be able to access the terminal building, although I can’t imagine this moves the needle significantly. The airport is also mandating the use of face masks.

The pubs are open on the Isle of Man…..

    • Bill says:

The kids go back to school on Monday. And it’s fathers day tomorroe. What a weekeend we are having

  • DJ says:

Just done some quick search for dates next year:

May 2021, Le Grand Paris 70k a night
    May 2021, Amstel Amsterdam 60k a night

I thought they were cheaper 🙁

    • Harry T says:

Amstel was as cheap as 40k a night on some dates but they appear to have changed it back to non dynamic pricing.

      • Amit says:

Bought points 6 days ago, and rate has now increased by 50%! Not happy

        • Harry T says:

Only buy points if you’re going to use them immediately!

          • Amit says:

That was the plan! They haven’t posted yet so how can I use them??

        • Andrew says:

Points purchased normally post immediately, so possibly an error you’ll need to rung up about.

    • Andrew says:

Yes, as was started to be discussed yesterday, the very low initial variable pricing seems to have shot up. I got some bargains last weekend – IC Singapore booked for 4 nights in Feb for 87,000, now back to more normal levels at 150,000. I’m not sure why the variable rates were set so low, 22k for an IC is a bit ridiculous. There are still some low rates out there but a lot of the very low ones in key cities have been amended, although maybe still slightly lower than pre-variable rates.

      • Harry T says:

This was definitely a case of the early bird getting the worm. I thought it was too good to last, so I made a few bookings.

Interesting that the Kimpton in Amsterdam still has the favourable dynamic pricing.

        • Genghis says:

Yep. As soon as I saw comments about the changes – initially for Amstel and then for the rest – I rebooked my stays. I think saved around 120k in total so v happy.
“In this game the only constant is change”.

        • ChrisC says:

I made a booking their earlier this week for a long weekend next May for 35k per night (Not an average). It’s now 52.5k. Which is slightly lower than the 55k it used to be (and still is on some nights)

The Best Flexible Rate Cash price is still the same, £327/ night.

There are still some good rates out there just depends where and when you want to travel

        • Andrew says:

New York for next year still seems to be good for the midrange hotels at about 20/25k but the ICs are back up at high rates.

        • Anna says:

I think this might have been the travel bargain of 2020! Just checked some of the 10 bookings I made while points prices were so low, they’re all now 30% – 50% higher.

          • Andrew says:

Yes! This year’s IB90K! Now we just need to hope that all these fabulous hotel bargains we have booked aren’t needing to be cancelled nearer the time due to covid!

      • The Urbanite says:

ICs for 22k were never anything but an error/misjudgement I suspect! Correction was always coming sooner rather than later so I wouldn’t hang about if there are any bargains still available!

    • Rob says:

Those are standard prices. May have pulled variable ones OR cash rate is so high it hits the points cap, which is the old standard price.

      • Harry T says:

I haven’t actually observed any relationship between the cash prices and dynamic points prices at the Amstel. They’ve just whacked everything back to 60k now anyway, but only for the IC.

        • Andrew says:

Agreed. The cash price (unsurprisingly) for a stay in February hasn’t shifted a penny since last weekend, but the points rate is now double, so possibly variable pulled or recalibrated.

          • Harry T says:

I booked a weekend in February for 40k a night before points prices went up again.

    • Janeyferr says:

Thursday was pondering booking Park Lane for 42500. Was slightly short points so was going to buy some. Couldn’t actually find my wallet, what with not using it very often currently. Located wallet last night so bought points, then went to book hotel and it was back up to non-dynamic price.

  • Dubious says:

“and additional cleaning, including with long-life anti-microbial surface treatments”.
I hope they are also using some form of anti-viral surface treatment too…

  • Michael C says:

Considering the Isle of Man borders are still indefinitely closed, I can only guess the IOM flight is for a couple of Letter of Exemption passengers + a few items of dodgy mail from Canray Wharf!

    • Bill says:

I know a pilot who is an island resident. He’s doing a BA flight down to Singapore

  • Mr. AC says:

Is there any way to see the point prices / availability for IHG hotels for a month, a-la what Marriott’s website allows? Right now looking for a good point price is a bit of a faff, you have to plug in the exact dates, or a long period and then try to guess what the interday variation is like based on the final (average) price.

  • Anna says:

I made a points booking for The George in Edinburgh for December – someone commented yesterday that there are rumours that it may be closing – I can’t find any reference to this online? I did see something in the comments recently about possible redundancies, could that be it?

    • Rob says:

      Just redundancies. Should stay open.

      • Anna says:

I thought so – I contacted them re accommodating our teenager; they upgraded us to a bigger room but said all their family rooms are sold out for December weekends so there doesn’t seem to be any issues with booking numbers once they re-open.

    • Anna says:

There are some great prices for HI and HIE’s there – these are especially handy if you need a family room (plus breakfast included at HIE).

    • Dezbez says:

Looks like this could be a really good offer, although written in German makes it a little more interesting…..

  • Craig says:

IC O2 seems to be not bookable for June next year?

    • Rob says:

Is that over Euro 2020 though?

      • Craig says:

No, 3rd and 4th? Euro 2020 (2021) dates wouldn’t be available yet unless it’s been block booked?

    • Janeyferr says:

I’ve found recently the IHG date range only going to 345ish days in the future. That’s the app so maybe different on website?

      • Craig says:

The other London hotels are bookable, just not the IC O2, points or cash.

    • ChrisC says:

A quick look at the O2 website shows Queen and Adam Lambert performing there for the first 3 weeks of the month so that could be something to do with it.

Within the realms of possibility that they have booked the whole hotel for themselves and hospitality packages / competition prizes etc etc

      • Craig says:

We are there for one of the concerts and got a room using points. I then tried to book a few days later for my daughter and there are no rooms available at all?
