Some British Airways ex-160 tier point routes from Gatwick showing 80 points from Heathrow

The switch of British Airways Gatwick short-haul services to Heathrow has led to an interesting but annoying quirk – some routes which offered 160 tier points now appear to only offer 80.

EDIT: following our article, it now looks like British Airways has updated its system and the destinations that dropped to 80 tier points are now back up at 160 tier points return. All is well.

I often get emails from readers who say “I need XXX tier points in the next few weeks to reach British Airways Bronze / Silver / Gold status – how can I do it?”.

If you need to earn a small number of tier points – between 80 and 160 – the easiest way was a weekend break to one of the few destinations flown by British Airways which offer 160 tier points return in Club Europe.  This is twice as many tier points as the usual Club Europe return which earns 80.

If you made such a booking for Summer 2020, however, you might be in trouble.  You may now only receive 80 tier points for your flight!

Club Europe British Airways 160 tier points flights

This is the list of ALL British Airways routes which used to offer 160 tier points.  Most of these routes were ALWAYS Heathrow routes and so still earn 160 tier points.

Some of the Gatwick routes have now dropped to 80 tier points following the switch of all short-haul Gatwick flights to Heathrow.  Is this an accident or not?  We don’t know.

The data is taken from the BA tier points calculator here.

  • Algiers – still 160 tier points
  • Athens – still 160 tier points
  • Bucharest – still 160 tier points
  • Catania – still 160 tier points
  • Chania – still 160 tier points
  • Corfu – still 160 tier points
  • Dalaman – still 160 tier points
  • Funchalnow only offers 80 tier points return from Heathrow

  • Lanzarote – still 160 tier points
  • Larnaca – still 160 tier points
  • Malta – still 160 tier points
  • Marrakech – still 160 tier points
  • Mykonos – still 160 tier points
  • Paphos – now only offers 80 tier points return from Heathrow

British Airways Paphos tier points

  • Reykjavik – still 160 tier points
  • Rhodes – still 160 tier points
  • Santorini – still 160 tier points
  • Sofia – still 160 tier points
  • Tenerife – still 160 tier points
  • Thessaloniki – still 160 tier points
  • Tirana – now only offers 80 tier points return from Heathrow
  • Zakynthos – still 160 tier points

Don’t dispair if you do have one of these routes booked.  It may post correctly once you have flown it, with the number thrown up by the calculator simply being an error.

“This is the list of ALL routes…”
(Rob’s capitalisation, presumably for effect to show he’s all-knowing…)

    Except he’s missed DBV!!!

  • Nick says:

Don’t know why my previous comment has been rejected… I only pointed out that Rob’s list of “ALL” routes missed Dubrovnik!

    • Rhys says:

You were flagged as a new commenter because there was a typo in your name 🙂

  • AJA says:

I think they’ve fixed the problem. I just tried the Avios Flight Calculator at

    https://www.britishairways.com/travel/flight-calculator/public/en_gb

LHR to PFO (Paphos) shows Business (R,I) earns 2996 Avios and 80TP each way
LHR to PFO Business (J,C,D) earns 4993 Avios and 80TP each way

Likewise LHR to TIA Business (R,I) earns 1760 Avios and 80TP each way and Business (J,C,D) earns 2933 Avios and 80TP

The Avios above is for a BAEC Blue member

    • Rob says:

Thanks. Knew they’d do it once the article went up!

    • Anna says:

Looks like I’m going to need to find a route which earns 90 tier points, any suggestions as to the nearest/cheapest option? This is obviously a pain as it would be much easier if I only needed 80!

      • Chris K says:

Go on low fare finder tool on BA and have a play.

One of the 80 TP destinations listed above in CE, and then economy on return (or vice versa) would do it.

Alternatively you could tag on a domestic connection to a 40 TP each way CE fare. E.g. MAN-LON-XXX-LON-MAN, or do a separate domestic when convenient to get 5TP each way for the last 10.

        • Skymansteve says:

Try finding a RETURN “same day connection” from Europe to MAN via LHR in July and AUG.
          Virtually Impossible!
Only two morning flights ex LHR to MAN.
This means having to night stop in LHR. Crazy!

      • Sunguy says:

Return in economy anywhere in the UK will net you 10TP…..plus any 40TP return route but cheapest will possibly be one of the 80TP business return routes – often can get them in a sale for ~£200ish…. so, despite only having to get 90, you might be cheaper getting 160……

        • Nick says:

You can get 100 as a very pleasant CE return to Spain if transiting in MAD. Look for the widebodies LHRMAD and back. If you’re flexible on destination there’s almost always something for around the £200-230 mark.

          • Secret Squirrel says:

£151 Gatwick to Milan in CE in Nov, take £70 off for 10k avios.

  • Tony says:

BA hasn’t flown to Kyiv since October last year
