Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

Which of the 19 current American Express hotel cashback deals is the best?

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

If you have an American Express card, you have probably noticed a large number of hotel cashback deals appearing on your online or app offers page recently.

You can see what you have by visiting the Amex website here and clicking the ‘Offers’ tab for EVERY card you hold.

We have written about them as they launched, but they dribbled out one at a time. I thought it would be good to list them all together and link them to the current brand promotions. It will help you decide how to maximise your returns over the next few months.

American Express hotel cashback deals in the UK

In general:

  • irrespective of what the Amex website says, these offers seem to work on cumulative spend
  • irrespective of what the Amex website says, these offers seem to work on pre-paid bookings as these are processed by the hotels

…. although we take no responsibility if you divert from the published rules.

You will NOT have all of the deals listed below unless you have a large number of American Express cards. I had to go through four different family cards to compile the list and I still can’t be certain that I have them all.

For clarity, there is no ‘best answer’ so don’t expect me to offer you one. These deals cover a wide variety of locations and price points and the bonus point offers have closing dates which don’t match. Your existing hotel status levels will also play a part as will any plans to chase a new status. There is no ‘one size fits all’ answer.

For example, I need eight Marriott nights by New Year to trigger five suite upgrades for 2021. This draws me to the Marriott deal for a mattress run especially as I can get 2,500 bonus points on stays by 18th October. Central London has no cheap (under £90) hotels however. We also don’t know what happens after 18th October. It’s complex ….

  • Oli says:

Any experience of the Firmdale 25% off working in their restaurants? I like the one at the Ham Yard hotel

  • Nick G says:

Informative article rob. I was only thinking the other day, but never actually counted up, how many hotel offers there are!

  • Tariq says:

Had 4 stays post at Marriott, had the 2500 bonus points on each, but no sign of the 5000 extra yet!

    • Rob says:

      This is a known issue.

    • Harry T says:

No one seems to have gotten that yet. Flyertalk consensus is that it will be awarded after the promotional period is over.

      • Tariq says:

Thanks, noticed that the terms state to allow up to 6 weeks after the promo ends so will hold back if others have experienced the same.

  • DH says:

Sorry if I missed it but do the offers stack in a situation where a hotel is part of two offers and you have both saved? Thanks

  • Colin JE says:

Isn’t it strange that IHG’s own Creation card never has any IHG offers, whereas US cards give 10% point rebates etc?

    • Jil says:

Sometimes in your creation account website, there’s a banner shows xx% off from IHG flexible rate when you book using your IHG credit card

    • Lady London says:

It’s also often worth booking IHG’s through US channels rather than European ones. Just make sure your computer stays on the US versions of the website chains by any means you choose.

      • Colin JE says:

Thanks both, that’s probably why I don’t see the offers – I’ve been using the app rather than website.
Thanks LL for the tip about going through US website. Will see what happens.

  • Tony says:

Yes I got the Melia deal too. One point to note – I was looking at the Vintry & Mercer in London. It’s in the SLH suite but they only quote rack rate. Book direct and you get 40% off a 1night stay and 50% off a 2 night stay, which makes a mockery of the deal!

    • TGLoyalty says:

Book direct and you might get lucky with the offer. Unless they have multiple card processing methods/machines.

  • Zara says:

Hi Rob, Can you please help me to understand the lack of offers on my BA premium Amex card?
Since 2018, I have had no offers showing on my card which I used to have in the past. Each year, I have hit the £10k spent and currently I have 2 of the 2-4-1 vouchers in my BA account.
I have complaint on multiple occasions to Amex and no one has provided a resolution to me which is very frustrating now as I am completing in closing the card. My marketing preferences is set to all ( to receive all offers), however my account is dry on offers. Can you share your expertise please?

    • Rob says:

A small minority of people are in the same position as you. I don’t know anyone who ever got the problem fixed unfortunately.

  • AN says:

Apologies if this has been covered previously – if you have the same offer showing on 2 Amex cards you have, is there anything stopping you from asking the hotel to split the transaction to trigger both cash backs?

Had a quick check through the T&Cs and can’t see anything about that.

    • DJ says:

I have done that quite a few times, especially with the recent Marriott offers.

The hotels I stayed were more than happy to accommodate this for me. I just said they were for “expenses” purposes.
