Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

Save 5,000 Avios on a hotel booking – however cheap

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

British Airways Executive Club is currently running a low key offer on discounted hotel rooms, if you pay with Avios.

In general, we don’t recommend this because you get a poor return. Last time we looked at how to book hotels with Avios, it worked out at around 0.5p per point. This isn’t great since I believe you should be able to get over 1p on flight redemptions.

This new offer changes the game a bit because the discount is fixed. Here are the rules:

On an expensive or long stay, saving 5,000 Avios won’t move the needle. On a cheap two-night stay it makes a BIG difference.

Here is potentially an extreme example. The easyHotel in Sheffield, pictured below, for a two night stay from 18th to 20th December, will cost just 1,825 Avios per night:

If you look at the easyHotel website for the same nights, the cash rate is £22.50. This works out at 1.2p per Avios, which is very good.

At a midrange hotel, such as the Crowne Plaza Sheffield, it doesn’t make much difference. The nightly rate for those dates drops from 10,975 Avios to 8,475 Avios which doesn’t change the ‘pence per point’ ratio much.

Can I save 5k avios on a booking at the Four Seasons Total Landscaping in Philadelphia?

  • Martin says:

I don’t see the 5,000 Avios hotel offer. Do you know who qualifies? (My BAEC account is not a UK one)

    • Luke says:

I can’t find Avios hotel offer on my BA account, neither I was able to find any discounted hotel. Does anyone have direct link please?

    • Neuromancer says:

I think it is UK only, or probably + US and some more, but definitely not universal

  • Ali M says:

I would have been excited hearing about a Hilton credit card (lots of folk on here interested I know) but will still come back for the airline thing too. ‘better not’ be amex related airline credit card as cant get sign up bonus here until mid next year, haha

    • TGLoyalty says:

Get yourself a virgin+ card one of the highest earning Hilton cards around.

      • Ali M says:

        Thank you 🙂
I take it that’s an efficient of using the virgin points which allegedly never expire now?

        • TGLoyalty says:

its better to use for Virgin but if Hilton points is what you want then that’s the best non-amex route.

          • Genghis says:

            Also better than Amex, right?
            Amex = 2HH / MR or 2 HH / £ spend
            Virgin black = 1.5 VFC = 2.25 HH / £ spend (albeit with a £160 fee)

    The Easy Hotel Sheffield…really?

Must be a really slow news day

    • Rob says:

Just an extreme example to show how the offer works on cheap hotels but not so well on others.

I was hoping I could find a hotel in Delhi or somewhere that ended up being free but they thought of that!

      • Mark M says:

You say the 5000 discount is fixed, but I’m seeing all sorts of numbers, from a few hundred to 9725 per night, e.g:
        Eden Plaza Kensington Hotel
        Member’s exclusive price
        avg/night
        Original Price 16,625 Avios
        Sale Price 6,900 Avios

Is the news about qatar’s business class unbundled fares ?

    • marcw says:

I think Qatar is overhauling fare structures, not just Business, but also Y.

Cluj will be interesting, I wanted to visit during our temporary break from COVID over the Summer but I had zero faith in Ryanair at STN.
