Another £175 of free money for American Express Platinum cardholders

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

American Express has launched another giveaway for holders of The Platinum Card.

This is presumably to convince them to keep paying the £575 annual fee for a lot of – admittedly very good – travel benefits at a time when no-one is travelling …..

It will only appear on your main card, not any supplementaries. It will not appear on Business Platinum cards.

American Express Amex Platinum card

IMPORTANT: I have the offer in the Amex app on my iPhone but it is NOT showing on the website. If you can’t see it in one spot, look in the other. Amex has confirmed to us that all cardholders will receive it.

What am I getting?

You will receive 100% cashback when you spend up to £175 (so basically £175 cashback) at:

  • Waitrose
  • Deliveroo
  • Harvey Nichols
  • Selfridges

Apart from Deliveroo, they are valid online or instore (when they reopen).

The offer runs to 18th July. This implies that it may be the last offer of its type that we see.

As a reader pointed out in the comments, it is a bit odd that Amex didn’t choose to make this ‘£30 per month for six months’. It would have done wonders for card retention.

How does the offer work?

The good news is that you don’t need to spend the £175 in one transaction, or even at the same retailer.

Each purchase you make at the above retailers will be refunded, 100%, onto your card within 2-3 days. This keeps on going until you hit the £175 cap.

Are all Platinum cardholders receiving this?

American Express says ‘Yes’. That said, I assume it won’t appear for people who are locked out of offers because they are in default or took advantage of the covid payment holidays.

If you do not see it – perhaps you are one of those people who haven’t received any offers for months due to IT issues – then I would call Amex to have it added.

Don’t forget to register before doing any spending!

  • IslandDweller says:

Thanks for alerting me. I have saved this (it showed on web login for me).

  • Sandgrounder says:

I’m in profit for this year now, and I actually cancelled in March but called back the next day, just in time, to change my mind. Wise choice! (For once)

  • MT says:

On my Centurion Card I got a £400 offer for same retailers. Would maybe have preferred a double points offer but overall pretty happy with it!

    • Rhys says:

Michael, would you be happy to discuss the centurion card over email?

    • Alex says:

For £2.5K a year card fee? I’d expect at least £400 for this kind of offer!

      • TGLoyalty says:

        I’d expect £600!

      • TGLoyalty says:

Also believe it’s £2500 sign up but then £1500 or so per year.

        • Alex says:

In that case it’s a bargain😂 I’m surprised £1500 can be justified but you only need 3/4 good offers like this and you’re covered really. 1MR/£1 I assume still?

          • Rob says:

It’s more than that. You can’t really justify it, the maths doesn’t work. Even the top tier hotel status cards don’t justify it.

          • DANNY says:

More of a status symbol than anything else. I used to work with many Amex Centurion cardholders in my previous role and the demography is very much: elite, from countries that are oil rich :), and expect the best of the best.

That includes the expectation of their Relationship manager to really be proactive in their servicing (reminding their CMs of birthdays coming up, tickets for exclusive events in the O2 etc.) and to be able to service lavish demands just by picking up the phone.

There is simply no Cost benefit Analysis with the Centurion card.

  • Mark says:

“Any misuse, as reasonably determined by us, relating to your redemption of Amex Offers may result in an awarded credit being reversed, and ineligibility from future Amex Offers and other promotions.” I cant see anything in the t&c’s to say you can’t buy a deliveroo gift card, anyone know from experience if this could fall foul of the above clause?

    • Andrew says:

Why would you need to buy a gift card? It’s a cumulative offer, so just keep spending with Deliveroo for the next 6 months and it’s free every time until you hit £175

      • Alex says:

Because if they get a voucher you could then get the rebate and cancel plat for example. Why pay 6 months worth of fee’s on the card…

        • Sandgrounder says:

Or you could sell a gift card and get cash if you don’t use the retailers in question, I think I’d go for Waitrose/JL in that case though.

    • Mark says:

I was planning to cancel my card in the next few weeks but wasnt planning to eat £175 worth of pizza in that time so wanted to spread it out with gift credit. Its a moot point anyway as I did a test £20 gift card purchase and the vendor on the amex statement is a third party not deliveroo. Thankfully checked the t&c’s and you can get a refund on a gift card within 14 days if none of it is used but just an FYI…

  • Jack says:

Damnit, only downgraded to Gold two weeks ago 🙁
Called AMEX and, understandably, couldn’t go back and make use of the offer.

  • Simon says:

FFS, yet another offer that hasn’t appeared on my card.

I’ve been a Platinum card holder for the past 21 years and barely get any offers – I think the last one was over 2 years ago.

I spend a fair amount on my card each month (£7K last month, £9K this month) and have spoken to Amex about this, but to no avail. Really annoying!

    • QwertKnowsBest says:

      +1 and member since 1994

      • DeB20 says:

+1 member since 1995, have 3 cards, never defaulted or missed any payments etc. Every time I call them, including earlier this week when I was having trouble making a payment on their website, they were gushing over my loyalty and excellent record on their files!

      • NFH says:

I’m likewise a member since 1995, and have had Platinum since 2000, and I have several other Amex accounts. I have received all of these offers during the pandemic except for Harrods.

    • Sina says:

Call Brighton, they will add it for you, it’s targeted for platinum cardholders.

      • Guernsey Globetrotter says:

Or just open a chat online – I had this offer added this way in a couple of minutes just now 😀

    • TGLoyalty says:

Have you tried removing it from your account for a few days ? Perhaps opening a new one and adding it to that?

      • G says:

Another offer not on my card. All offers have stopped on all my cards and account has always been in good standing. Have tried removing it from online account and adding to a new one – no change. Is sounding like getting no new offers is getting fairly common.

    • Chan says:

Same, no new real good offers for a long time.

    • kitten says:

Stop spending and dump it then.

Sometimes there is only one way to get a message to a provider.

    • Charlieface says:

Why would they give you an offer? They are trying to incentivise new business

  • Rob says:

I now have the official press release from Amex on this offer which says that ALL Plats are receiving it. Unless you are in default on your card, I would recommend anyone else who doesn’t see it on either the app or online to call.

    • Steven says:

So is this for personal card holders only Rob or business plat also? TIA

      • kintarasan says:

@Steven: Unfortunately, Rob says in the 3rd paragraph: “It will not appear on Business Platinum cards.”

    • DeB20 says:

Thanks Rob, I’ll have to call as I never get these offers and, as listed in my previous comment, never defaulted etc.

    • DJ says:

How do you convince the operator saying this offer is available to all? Is there a link for the press release? When I called earlier they said it’s targeted :/

      • Rob says:

Amex don’t put these press releases online unfortunately.

        • meta says:

When they started their target offer spiel, I just told them I have the press release which says it’s available to all Platinum cardmembers. The agent then went to check the offer terms and targeting and came back to say that she’ll add it for me. It’s now showing in my account.

    • Alan says:

Do you know if it will apply to new cards. I was holding off getting the platinum until closer to travel opening again up but this would justify going a few months early.

    • Chris H says:

Is it likely that it will be extended to Business Platinum cards? If not, is it usual that they get a similar offer to the Personal Card?

      • Rob says:

Unlikely because Business cards are meant to be used for business expenditure and you won’t get much of that in Harvey Niks.

I’d be intrigued as to what discount the companies give Amex for being in this offer. I can imagine the department stores and Deliveroo offering 30% (ie they repay Amex 30% of the credit) because they have fat margins, but not Waitrose.

  • r* says:

It wasnt on my card so I asked in chat and it was then added.
