The rumours were correct. IHG Rewards is running a huge ‘5x’ bonus promotion today and tomorrow.

The rules have been published here (click here).

Full details of the offer, and registration, are on this page here.

Anyone who is registered for IHG’s current ‘3x’ Autumn offer – you can register now via this link – is automatically opted in.

IHG Rewards 5x

You will receive 5x base points for all IHG stays booked on Monday and Tuesday.

Stays must be completed by 31st December.

You will need to have registered via the link here before booking.

The number of bonus points you can earn is capped at 70,000. This includes bonus points earned during the current ‘3x’ promotion.

70,000 isn’t that much. You will be earning a bonus 40 points per $1 under this offer, so you will hit the cap if you book more than $1,750 of stays pre-tax.

How valuable is this offer?

Very valuable.

Let’s assume that an IHG Rewards point is worth 0.4p (which we usually say it is) and that you have Spire Elite status and earn a 100% elite bonus.

  • You spend £100 in a UK hotel …..
  • …. which is £88.89 before VAT
  • …. which is equivalent to $118.48
  • You earn 10 base points per $1 at most brands, x5 as part of this offer, plus a 100% Spire Elite bonus on top
  • You therefore receive 60 points per $1
  • You receive 7,108 points for your stay ($118.48 x 60)
  • At 0.4p, the points are worth £28.43
  • You receive points worth 28.4% of the post-tax amount you paid

Conclusion

This is a very generous offer, and it may be worth rebooking any stays you have coming up if the price hasn’t moved.

Details of the offer are available via this page of the IHG site by the time you read this.

Am I right in thinking that 304 AED before taxes/fees so ~ $80 would give 800 base pts x5 = 4000 base qualifying pts? P2 needs 3000 pts for spire.

What happens after the 70,000 ‘cap’, do you go back to the 3x points (if you are at that) for the rest of the stay. Or zero? I have a stay that will be $2400 and trying to work out if I’m loosing by booking all?

OT: Any issues with transferring MR to Virgin Atlantic? Tried to do a transfer (first time) 14 days ago and Amex say they have sent the transfer but waiting on VA to accept it. I was under the impression transfers were almost immediate, even with it being the first transfer, 2 weeks seems a long time?

    • Rob says:

Yes, should be instant, perhaps an hour or so for the first transfer as Amex waits for Virgin to confirm the account number.

  • Gavin says:

Doesn’t work for me for my 2 December bookings – one isn’t flexible, the other IHG is more expensive and in the wrong area. I may need some more bookings but don’t know dates or locations yet.

  • Hostime says:

Unusually, I can benefit from this promotion. I have been pestering my partner for weeks to book two hotels for December, and finally the dates are confirmed… and the prices with IHG for North Carolina are significantly lower than with Hilton or Marriott, making this promotion ever the more appealing. Thanks for sharing!

A normal dinner, bed & breakfast rate would count as a qualifying stay and earn the approx 28% in points back, wouldn’t it? Can’t see any reason not to, effectively getting dinner free!
