A rare American Express cashback offer at John Lewis

For the first time, at least as far as I can remember, American Express has launched a cashback deal with John Lewis.

It isn’t hugely generous and, based on my cards, it is quite restricted, but it is an interesting development.

If one of your American Express cards is targetted for this offer, you will receive £10 back on a £100 John Lewis purchase made by 25th March.

John Lewis American Express cashback

The rules that it must be a one-off transaction, not cumulative.

If you are a regular Waitrose shopper, the easiest thing to do would be to pop into John Lewis and buy a £100 gift card. These can be used at Waitrose without any issues.

The offer appears restricted

John Lewis isn’t throwing a huge amount of money at this.

Only 20,000 American Express cardholders can register. I reckon only about 33% will actually end up redeeming, so the total cost to them is only £66,000.

Of the six Amex cards in our home (eight, including supplementaries), we only had it on one card – my Platinum.

Buying gift cards online may not work

Buying a £100 gift card in a John Lewis store is almost certain to trigger the £10 cashback.

This is not necessarily true if you buy online. Many retailers use third party companies to handle gift card sales. You may find that an online order is processed by an external party and it is their name that goes on your card statement, disqualifying your cashback.

You have until 23rd March to trigger the cashback if targetted.

We have a baby on the way and have spent the month either side of Christmas buying thousands of pounds of John Lewis vouchers from Morrisons because of the 10% uncapped Morrison’s flashback.

Had to limit myself to 450-600 a time as they kept thinking I was being the victim of some kind of scam (which I thought was pretty good of them actually).
