A rare American Express cashback offer at John Lewis

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

For the first time, at least as far as I can remember, American Express has launched a cashback deal with John Lewis.

It isn’t hugely generous and, based on my cards, it is quite restricted, but it is an interesting development.

If one of your American Express cards is targetted for this offer, you will receive £10 back on a £100 John Lewis purchase made by 25th March.

John Lewis American Express cashback

The rules that it must be a one-off transaction, not cumulative.

If you are a regular Waitrose shopper, the easiest thing to do would be to pop into John Lewis and buy a £100 gift card. These can be used at Waitrose without any issues.

The offers appears restricted

John Lewis isn’t throwing a huge amount of money at this.

Only 20,000 American Express cardholders can register. I reckon only about 33% will actually end up redeeming, so the total cost to them is only £66,000.

Of the six Amex cards in our home (eight, including supplementaries), we only had it on one card – my Platinum.

Buying gift cards online may not work

Buying a £100 gift card in a John Lewis store is almost certain to trigger the £10 cashback.

This is not necessarily true if you buy online. Many retailers use third party companies to handle gift card sales. You may find that an online order is processed by an external party and it is their name that goes on your card statement, disqualifying your cashback.

You have until 23rd March to trigger the cashback if targetted.

  • Andrew J says:

Gift cards online absolutely won’t work as when you go to buy one it redirects to a third party as Selfridges does – it’s quite obvious as the domain URL changes.

  • Matt says:

I have £20 back for spending £100 at John Lewis opticians, I assume they don’t sell Waitrose vouchers…

    • Andrew J says:

Operated by Luxottica Retail UK (as is David Clulow which is why the offers are identical) so likely to have a separate POS system.

      • Tariq says:

They do have separate POS. However you can spend JL gift vouchers in the opticians – they just go and cash them out at a regular till before settling on the opticians POS.

  • Lale says:

I got quite excited reading this as I always shop at John Lewis! Quickly discovered that it isn’t available on my card. Oh well

  • Sandgrounder says:

Can you use multiple gift cards online for a single purchase?

    • Bryan says:

      Yes you can.

    • John says:

Yes but if you refund anything the refund can only be used online, no longer in store

      • Simon says:

Really? I bought something with a gift card last month and they refunded me onto a new digital gift card. I think this is new – I remember getting online only credit before.

  • BJ says:

A bit redundant given the 10% Morrisons offer on anything over £30 which is also on a wider range of cards. I didn’t even bother saving it.

    • John says:

Yes it’s not useful, I haven’t spent directly in John Lewis or waitrose for years

    • Andrew J says:

Does the Morrison’s offer track? I’ve heard so many reports on here that it doesn’t I didn’t even bother saving it.

      • Paul Pogba says:

The latest one tracked with email notification before I left the store yesterday. All my Christmas transactions paid out a few weeks ago.

      • BJ says:

100% success for me so far, longest I ever waited for a Morrisons offer to track was a week or so. Last year the Virgin in store 8x did not track at all unfortunately.

      • Alan says:

@Andrew J – I had to call Amex about 2 that didn’t automatically come through last time. Were both at the same store. Email confirmation re spend every time but only automatic credit from some stores IME.

        • BJ says:

@Alan, if you’re still in Edinburgh, I did all of mine at the Ferry Road branch. All worked fine regardless of attended or self checkout.

      • RussellH says:

        Yes and no.
Never had any problems with Morrison’s before, but the last two had to be chased.
On my gold, I spoke to a very understanding agent, who promptly credited me with twice my missing credit. The real credit turned up six weeks later.
        🙂

      • John says:

I had a Curve offer for Morrisons, spent before Christmas and it only paid out last week.

    • David says:

For me, the Morrisons one was only 5%, so the best deal will be to spend £100 directly on amex at JL and the rest buying JL gift cards at morrisons

      • Jordan D says:

I’ve got a combination of 5%, 7% and 10% on various cards at Morrisons. Only one of the 10%s, so that’s the card that will be used.

    • Alan says:

Only 5% here although I have made good use of the 10% off previously.

      • RussellH says:

My partner has 10% on her Rewards Amex.
I have 7% on Gold and 5% on my BA main + 2 supps

  • Nick says:

I have it on my Amex Platinum credit card.

  • Matty says:

I used this at the time across a number of cards – £20 back for £50 spend. This time, as it’s only £10 per £100, the Morrisons offer of 10% is more generous, so it makes better sense to get JLP gift cards via that route.

    • Andrew J says:

The John Lewis offer is as generous if you’re spending £100. The Morrison’s offer also requires you to go to a Morrison’s shop which not everyone might want to do, whereas the JL offer can be used directly online. Both offers have their advantages depending on how much you’re going to spend and if you’re going to Morrison’s.

  • KF says:

    On my Amex Platinum also
