Jumeirah Frankfurt hotel to be reflagged as a JW Marriott

According to reports in the German media, the Jumeirah Frankfurt hotel is closing on 1st April.

Following a full refurbishment – which is desperately needed looking at recent reviews, although the photo below looks OK – the hotel will become a JW Marriott.

The closure represents a further unravelling of Jumeirah’s long term strategy. Whilst it is, without a shadow of doubt, the strongest hotel group in Dubai – being owned by the Dubai Government helps you get the prime beach locations – it has struggled elsewhere.

Jumeirah Frankfurt to become JW Marriott

It has lost multiple hotels in recent years, in places as varied as Istanbul and the Maldives, although it still has a presence there. Embarassingly, it even lost three hotels in Dubai which were opened in the Al Seef complex, and the flagship Jumeirah Etihad Towers in Abu Dhabi recently switched to Conrad.

Following this loss, the brand’s presence in Europe will be restricted to two London hotels, Mallorca (a great hotel which I reviewed here) and Capri Palace. The new Muscat Bay beach resort in Oman is still due to open in May.

Jumeirah even messed up the Sirius loyalty scheme, now rebranded as Jumeirah One and offering fully revenue-based redemptions.

Checked all three of my current IHG bookings in the flash sale yesterday; price of one was identical and the other two higher than the price I got about three weeks ago.

    • MrIO says:

I just did the same for my Barcelona stay. The prices are now 30% higher than 2 weeks ago and therefore my original price is cheaper.

    • Jimbob says:

Yep, our stay in Barcelona is 7% more expensive than when I booked 2 weeks ago

    • Andrew says:

My planned UK stay is 10% less.

Obviously we get the usual 10% rebate from Barclaycard/Virgin Money too.

  • Colin MacKinnon says:

Anyone recommend a hotel at Dubai airport T1 for an evening stay before 01:30 flight back?

    Thinking Holiday Inn, perhaps.

ps. For Rob: I can post here from my iPhone, but can’t post in forums. It asks me to sign in and then says I haven’t done the Captcha – but there is no captcha to complete!!

    • Blair Waldorf Salad says:

Hi Colin, i think the Holiday Inn is a HIX, formerly Premier Inn, and closer to T3. Le Meridien lines up more closely with T1; its back entrance faces 2 new hotels – Element and Aloft. I would recommend neither of these unless you are simply seeking basic in/out places to rest your head.

    • Gordon says:

The Le Meridien is actually a fantastic property service second to none, I actually stayed for 5 nights the staff are fantastic.
It would be my choice just for the one night.

    • elt says:

I have the same captcha requiremts

      • Rob says:

Sorry, this is a known issue and we are looking into it – it ISN’T down to the Captcha software on the registration page. It is triggering the overall site security package – the thing we have in place to stop cyber attacks – and we are struggling to work out why.

  • Ian says:

Their policy on mask exemption is illegal.

At least BA do not require a mask if exempt.

    • Arch says:

Agreed. UK citizens don’t need any medical proof of exemption and mostly can’t even get it, so how can they require it?

Think you mean BA do not require “proof” if exempt – quite correct, they cannot demand it.

About time all this mask nonsense stopped. but as stated, sadly, “Until the first group becomes smaller than the second group, you can expect restrictions to continue.”

      • David says:

Hmmm… You two aren’t even bright enough to post on the correct thread, so I think I safely ignore your misinformed nonsense.

  • blenz101 says:

Wrong article but that aside assuming you mean Jet2 mask policy. What law you think they are breaking? It is standard practice for an airline to request more details of a person’s condition or impairment. They regularly need to satisfy themselves someone is fit to fly via the provision of medical evidence.

Jet2 are being rightly cautious that they don’t allow their typical passenger to be maskless for the flight from the UK whilst often drinking heavily at the airport and onboard and then have an issue on landing where large numbers of people refuse to mask up causing issues with local authorities and the cabin crew.

I find it amazing so many people in the UK manage to declare themselves exempt to begin with. Amazing the number of UK tourists in Dubai who managed to wear a mask when it was mandatory pretty much without exception yet the second they got on a BA flight pulled out a sunflower lanyard and were disabled for the next 8 hours.

    • KP says:

Your last paragraph is absolutely spot on !!

    • GM says:

1000 times all of this!!! It’s “exempt” for 99.9999% of those claiming it.

    • Gordon says:

I was under the impression that if you were exempt from wearing a face mask you had to wear a face shield ?.

      • TGLoyalty says:

And what exactly does a face shield do?

        • Arch says:

Same as a mask – nothing!

          • TGLoyalty says:

I mean we can argue about what face masks might or might not do – I think they had their place in confined places before mass vaccination and highly rated N95 masks have a place for those that need that peace of mind.

But shields are utterly useless, outside of medical settings, unless you don’t know how to cover your mouth when you sneeze / cough. The worst of the comfort blankets.

        • blenz101 says:

Face shield will also protect your eyes from virus infected droplets which a mask can’t do.

          • TGLoyalty says:

It’s a complete nonsense no one is getting infected that way outside of hospital settings. There’s no one close enough to you in sainsburys or waitrose who will cough / sneeze large droplets into your eyes.

          • blenz101 says:

I don’t agree either but Arch suggested they do nothing. I’m sure Qatar who were so in love with them felt they did. And we aren’t talking about walking around Waitrose, we are talking about hundreed of passengers sat next to each other on a low cost carrier with no social distancing.

I’m delighted masks are being removed. I just don’t agree that Jet2 are breaking the law by asking those who are going to refuse to wear one on arrival have to provide some evidence they are exempt when they land in a country that requires them.

    • Arch says:

Actually it is against international law to force anyone to wear a mask, so your entire argument is moot – everyone is exempt!

That aside, as stated above, you cannot get “proof” of exemption in UK, so how can you possibly provide it?! UK law does not require it, therefore Jet2 is breaking law to request it, since as per UK law, you cannot ask someone to provide proof of exemption. Perhaps you should know your facts before you share your opinion.

      • blenz101 says:

Anybody with a geninue medical reason will be able to get their GP to confirm their condtion and will easily be able will evidence that an exemption is apporpriate. e.g. those with COPD, severe asthma, autism, dementia, Alzheimer’s, hydrocephalus etc.

Jet2 can request anything they like as a condition of carridge on their services.

  • Nick says:

As is normal with IHG sales, you can usually book room(s) for stays later than their stated latest travel date (currently 4th September 22).

Sorry, IT screw up today (also why 3rd email was late). The BWC piece was done very late and I forgot to change other pieces.

Jumeirah also lost the Royal Saray in Bahrain, though apparently they’re building a new resort in the south of the island due open this year
