(DEAL DEAD) BE QUICK: Most IHG hotels showing at half price or less for points!

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

I am typing this on Sunday afternoon – it’s not clear how long this deal will last.

EDIT: It died around 8pm on Sunday

Most IHG hotels globally, for all dates (albeit not the very short term), are currently bookable for roughly half – or less – the usual number of points.

The pricing appears to be:

  • Kimpton – 45,000 points
  • Regent / InterContinental – 35,000 points to 45,000 points
  • Hotel Indigo – 30,000 points
  • Crowne Plaza – 25,000 points
  • Holiday Inn / Holiday Inn Express – 20,000 points

I just booked Kimpton Paris and the new Kimpton Mallorca for 45,000 points and InterContinental London for 40,000 points.

The Kimpton Paris, for the date I wanted, was over 100,000 points per night when I looked a week or so ago, with a €660 cash rate.

It isn’t clear if not all hotels are taking part or only certain dates are included. I can’t get the InterContinental Amstel for when I need to be in Amsterdam, for example, but I know others have booked it.

You can even lock in the Maldives etc at hugely discounted rates.

This could be a mistake but it could be an unprecedented flash sale which is due to be announced tomorrow. Mr & Mrs Smith hotels are not included, which leads me to believe that this is a deliberate sale of some sort. Regardless, it is worth making some speculative bookings – remember that all reward nights can be cancelled.

Should you buy points?

Today (Sunday) is the last day to get a 100% bonus if you buy IHG points. You can buy here.

People who have done it say that they are posting immediately. I am not guaranteeing this to you but it is working for others.

With the bonus you’re paying around 0.4p per point so, for example, my Kimpton Paris stay – which is €660 for cash – would need £180-worth of purchased points.

The ‘buy points’ page is here if you choose to risk it.

Not sure if the same deal is still on as I tested the Kimpton in Paris and it’s gone up to 89,000/night, but the IC Dubai Marina is an astonishingly cheap 21,000/night, so there’s still bargains available. Can anyone recommend le royal meridian jumeirah for Dubai, or something good in that area?

  • Alan says:

Only heard about this offer this morning – thought IHG very good value when booking US stuff yesterday vs Hilton, although most seem the same price today so can’t have been because of this 🤷 Either way have got quite a few IHG bookings made!

  • DJ says:

Managed to have two nights (including New Year’s Eve) booked at IC Park Lane for only 40K a night.

Looks like a bargain since the cash price is £688 a night for the chosen date.

    • Jeff says:

Gosh …. it looks like we may have a quorum for a party. If we all upgrade to Club …… do they have the courge NOT to keep the bubbly open?

  • Chrisasaurus says:

So with the dust settled (and me along with everyone else wishing I’d made more of it) do we have any sense what that was all about yet?

If it was meant as a sale for today or thereabouts onwards then if the locusts bought up all the inventory a day early then it’s not been a huge success…

    • Rob says:

      No idea at all.

It would be easier to explain if it had been all hotels, all dates and not most hotels, most dates but with gaps.

  • will says:

Did anyone try and look at six senses properties while this was on?

    • Rob says:

No – but only a handful are bookable on points.

      • NorthernLass says:

Douro Valley didn’t seem to have any award nights at all when I looked yesterday (though it might have been Creation free nights at that one!)

        • meta says:

I looked at Six Senses and none of them were available at low cost. In general, the reward inventory for SS has dried out anyway.

Astonishingly there were a few odd nights available in Bora Bora and Maldives when I looked, but nothing to make a five/seven day trip. I suspect since this was published on FT that most of the inventory was gone by the time I looked.

  • SGJNI says:

Are we entirely 100% sure that yesterday’s bookings are going to be honoured before I start to dismantle my previous bookings? I now have email confirmations for each but I don’t entirely trust IHG even in ordinary times!

    • ChrisC says:

I have a good case to keep mine if I do.

One booking was made before any publicity on this. A couple of others are for a hotel / destination I regularly stay in and a few rebookings made because the rates have changed and I do that on a regular basis anyway.

Plus I think the column of complaints would overwhelm them.

      • ChrisC says:

And before the spelling police start yes I know I made typos!

    • NorthernLass says:

I’m going to hang on to my original bookings for a week or 2 to see if there are any further developments. I’ve decimated our household points stashes but realistically there’s no way I can fit any more stays in for the next 12 months!

    • Rob says:

      I think you’re fine.

The hotels won’t lose out because they get a fixed sum from IHG for redemptions irrespective of the points used.

IHG isn’t going to risk massive pushback by cancelling rooms.

When people bought points to redeem yesterday, I reckon IHG will still make a profit on those people. Indigo Bath got about £70 from IHG when I stayed there on a reward (I got their invoice by mistake) and if you’d bought 35k points yesterday to book that, even with the 100% bonus, you’d have paid £140.

      • Jeff says:

        Hi Rob,

i understand that redeemed points for stays are independent of the cash hotels receive from IHG, but wouldn’t a hotel prefer to receive say the normal £700 for say an IC Park Lane New Year’s eve booking? Is there any experience of hotels cancelling points bookings directly`?

        • Rob says:

That reward night was already there – all that happened was that the cost to you was reduced. The hotel is obliged to put up 5% of rooms each night for redemption.

  • Jim lee says:

Booked six senses Ibiza and 150k points vs current 300

  • Damien says:

Jeez that was mental yesterday. I’d 5 nights booked in IC Hayman Island @ 95k each. Once rebooked at 35K, I’d enough points left over to book my entire holiday with points, and also a weekend at Kimpton Mallorca for next year. Hope they honour these.

Contacted IC Sydney to find how much to get club access. Wanting 380 AUD per night. Might have been tempted, but with breakfast included with Diamond, it’s not as enticing. Really just paying £220 quid extra for the view and a few glasses of nice wine.
