British Airways has started to roll out its Summer 2023 schedule with a number of new routes announced today.

As usual, this means that Avios availability on these routes is wide open. You will find 14 Avios seats (four Business, two Premium Economy, eight Economy) bookable now on all of these flights.

When I say ‘now’, I mean as at 11.45am on Wednesday. Snooze and you WILL lose, especially for The Maldives.

How to book Avios seats to Maldives

The Maldives

British Airways is bringing back Heathrow to The Maldives as a year round service. Flights were due to end in late March at the end of the Winter flying season.

Outbound flights will operate on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, with the return the following day.

This SeatSpy screenshot show days with 2 x Club World business class seats bookable for Avios, as of 11.15am.

Seats are wide open from the end of March until mid August, which is as far out as you can book at the moment.

Las Vegas is back!

The popular service from London Gatwick to Las Vegas is also resuming for Summer 2023, which in airline terms means from the last week of March to the last week of October.

Flights will depart three times per week, on Tuesday, Friday and Sunday, returning the same day.

The outbound departs Gatwick at 11am, landing at 1.50pm. The return leaves Las Vegas at 3.40pm, landing the next day at 9.40am.

Here is SeatSpy availability for two Club World seats as at 11.15:

Vancouver is launching as a new London Gatwick route

This is a surprise one. British Airways is launching flights from Gatwick to Vancouver next Summer, complementing the Heathrow service.

This starts later than the other routes, from 19th May. Flights will be daily except Tuesday.

The outbound flight leaves Gatwick at noon, landing at 1.35pm. The return leaves Vancouver at 3.25pm, landing in Gatwick at 8.40am on the following day.

This is from SeatSpy this morning for days with two Club World business class seats for Avios:

Buenos Aires returns as a direct service

Finally, British Airways has announced the return of direct flights to Buenos Aires from Heathrow.

This has, for a while, operated via Sao Paulo whilst loads were too low to justify separate flights to each city.

The new service will operate five days per week.

Happy booking! Remember that seats only open up 355 days in advance, so the latest you can book today will be mid August 2023.

The downside of the direct route to EZE (Buenos Aires) is that they’ve changed (downgraded?) the aircraft from A350 with a new CW to an old CW cabin on 787. My flight to EZE was changed a couple of hrs ago and they even kept the same seats, but in old style CW… Just spoke to BA, before seeing this email, was trying to find out if they do have any flights with a stopover via GRU, to get the Club Suite cabin. Quite disappointed now ;-(

  • Paul says:

I had already booked a trip to South America via IB. The fees for two were just £480 as opposed to over £1650 on BA. Availability was significantly better if your start in MAD. Given that cash saving it was a no brainer.
I booked the flights as one way so that return through to LHR with a 1 hr connection in MAD so my bags go through from origin………hopefully
Even with CE avios to MAD and a night in a hotel, the savings are still close to £1000. I am happy to bin a 241 voucher for that sort of saving.

    • YC says:

What is the additional avios you used given no 2-1?

      • Paul says:

That’s the thing, it was not double. I used just 234000 Avios
        MAD SCL
        MVD MAD LHR

        BA wanted 180,000 plus £1,650

    • cinereus says:

Yeah it’s absolute madness to ever book these routes via BA over IB…

  • Rhys says:

Hoping my Sydney flights change back to a 777 with Club Suite!

    • chris says:

Sorry im against that ; have 3 Sydneys in F for next 4 months. I like the better air and bigger windows on the 787; definitely felt better arriving this year than in recent years on the 777.

Given the crack of dawn arrival into Sydney im expected to show up to work for 9am; so feeling more normal is a win for me

      • Mike Hunt says:

Chris – go a day earlier and have a lie in before work

        • chris says:

They are paying for first so I don’t lose a day …

          • Amy C says:

Wow, first I was thinking what a b**ch of a company you work for making you come in at 9am straight off that flight! Then when I read they were paying for first I was overcome with green eyes. They are v generous!

  • BuildBackBetter says:

Crap, left avios at QR account!

  • Gordon says:

Great, Thanks Rob…. I was only looking at US west coast for next April after cancelling the trip for November. And could not find the dates I wanted for for 2-4-1 Voucher in CW and gave up.
Found dates this morning easily for 3 week trip next April😎.

  • Karl says:

Vancouver to London flight time of 9hr 35 mins? Imagined it to be a lot longer but just checked and that’s correct. Barely much longer than Miami! I like at least 12 hours in CW. 5 hours enjoying food/drink/films, at least 6 sleeping, and the the last hour sorting out getting ready.

    • Mike Hunt says:

Karl – what have you been doing if you need an hour at the end if a flight for “sorting out getting ready”

      • Karl says:

I need a good 10 mins to come to Mike. Also get changed out of the pyjamas, brush teeth, sort the bedding out, eat the breakfast/snack, fill out any landing forms. Some people (not me) would also need time to syphon off any salt and pepper shakers/other sundries into their bags.

    • dougzz99 says:

      Mercator to blame.

    • cinereus says:

Simple great circle of course it’s similar to Miami.

      • Karl says:

Indeed, one of those geographical quirks that many aren’t aware of, like Edinburgh being west of Bristol or Norwich north of Birmingham.

  • Nik says:

Maldives booked for Easter 2023! Midweek to Midweek so both legs off peak. Thanks for the heads-up Rob

  • steve says:

Got 2 tickets to MLE in May. Thanks HfP.
