British Airways has started to roll out its Summer 2023 schedule with a number of new routes announced today.

As usual, this means that Avios availability on these routes is wide open. You will find 14 Avios seats (four Business, two Premium Economy, eight Economy) bookable now on all of these flights.

When I say ‘now’, I mean as at 11.45am on Wednesday. Snooze and you WILL lose, especially for The Maldives.

How to book Avios seats to Maldives

The Maldives

British Airways is bringing back Heathrow to The Maldives as a year round service. Flights were due to end in late March at the end of the Winter flying season.

Outbound flights will operate on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, with the return the following day.

This SeatSpy screenshot show days with 2 x Club World business class seats bookable for Avios, as of 11.15am.

Seats are wide open from the end of March until mid August, which is as far out as you can book at the moment.

Las Vegas is back!

The popular service from London Gatwick to Las Vegas is also resuming for Summer 2023, which in airline terms means from the last week of March to the last week of October.

Flights will depart three times per week, on Tuesday, Friday and Sunday, returning the same day.

The outbound departs Gatwick at 11am, landing at 1.50pm. The return leaves Las Vegas at 3.40pm, landing the next day at 9.40am.

Here is SeatSpy availability for two Club World seats as at 11.15:

Vancouver is launching as a new London Gatwick route

This is a surprise one. British Airways is launching flights from Gatwick to Vancouver next Summer, complementing the Heathrow service.

This starts later than the other routes, from 19th May. Flights will be daily except Tuesday.

The outbound flight leaves Gatwick at noon, landing at 1.35pm. The return leaves Vancouver at 3.25pm, landing in Gatwick at 8.40am on the following day.

Buenos Aires returns as a direct service

Finally, British Airways has announced the return of direct flights to Buenos Aires from Heathrow.

This has, for a while, operated via Sao Paulo whilst loads were too low to justify separate flights to each city.

The new service will operate five days per week.

Happy booking! Remember that seats only open up 355 days in advance, so the latest you can book today will be mid August 2023.

Another great heads up from HfP, thanks! Earlier this afternoon managed to book 2 x return flights to MLE from LHR, Club, in June next year using a 2-4-1 which was due to expire next Sept! We were also lucky back in I think maybe 2019?! when Rob gave the heads up that MLE flights switched from LGW to LHR and avios availability opened up, bagged the same then but flights were cancelled by BA 3 times due to covid, restrictions etc, each time BA rescheduled them for us. Said we wouldn’t go again but this was just too tempting! Thanks again!

  • Gary123 says:

Thanks for the e-mail, After fretting and becoming annoyed last week that there was no Vancouver availability, had the choice of Flights after I opened your e-mail at 12.25. Straight in and luckily enough to get first choice dates. 241 Voucher used too. I’m so glad I got pointed to this site a few years ago. Travel has certainly become better since I signed up for the e-mails.

  • ADS says:

Anybody got any info / educated guesses about whether BA will bring back direct Durban flights ?

    • Richard B says:

I can’t speak to business class demand which is likely to be the prevailing factor but Economy pricing to SA for this winter are a right curiousity.

In the peak Xmas period the airlines are asking for roughly double pre covid(direct or non-direct).

Outside of peak, direct London — SA is broadly flat (maybe £100 higher) on pre covid, perhaps due to Virgin re entering CPT. But the usually far cheaper KLM/AF/Lufthansa are just not available. They are wanting the previous peak time money for whenever.

To the original q:I think whilst Virgin are doing daily leisure schedule (daytime flight one direction) CPT flights it’s unlikely BA thinks there will enough demand for any direct Durban but leisure schedule of substance.

      • ADS says:

Thanks Richard. I don’t know the historic pricing on the Durban route, but I was surprised to see Emirates selling Economy seats in March for over £800 !

It feels like BA could make some decent money with a few flights a week this Winter.

  • Tonya says:

I was wavering on booking our first trip to the Maldives and then I received your e-mail. I was able to book 3 Club World Seats for next June (the only time we can go). Pretty excited. Thank you!

  • Alan says:

Yawn, yet more LGW routes without domestic connections. Avios getting more and more pointless.

    • ianM says:

Indeed, only option from north of Manchester is a 6am flight from Glasgow!

  • Paul says:

Kept trying to book a return in CW in June but it failed over and over. Changed the return leg to Prem Economy as I figured less important on a day time flight and it went through first time. Now looking and it’s still showing 4 CW seats on the return date that I couldn’t book.

It’s also showing 2 PE seats though, so I figure it could be wrong.

I take it it’s a massive gamble for me to try to cancel it and then rebook in CW return? And there’s no way for me to upgrade the PE return leg to CW now it’s booked?

  • Andrew P says:

Another great heads up… just booked our 3rd Maldives trip for next June, following November last year and February this year. All after seeing seat availability on here!
Yes the ‘taxes and charges’ are high, but fares in general atm are very high. We looked at vegas this summer and economy was £1100 return so we used points for business

  • Stephen says:

Got an old British Airways 241 voucher – expires 16-Mar-2023. Any way to extend this / fly after this date?

Or can it be applied to existing AVIOS bookings?

    Thanks

    • Rob says:

      No and No.

If you cancel an existing Avios booking there is a chance the seats go back into the system and you can rebook. This is not guaranteed though – the BA computer will have a think about the chance of selling them for cash, and if it thinks it can then it will keep them.
