Get a 2p per Avios discount on British Airways cash flights from Gatwick

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

If you are opted in to British Airways Executive Club marketing emails, you may have received an interesting offer today.

If you book a BA short haul Gatwick flight for cash by 23:59 on Monday, you can ‘part pay with Avios’ and receive 2p per Avios in value.

Full details are on ba.com here.

Part pay with Avios offer

The offer is fairly flexible, and is valid on economy (Euro Traveller) and business (Club Europe) flights from London Gatwick.

That said, the terms and conditions for the offer suggest it is only “valid on selected travel dates between 20 October 2022 – 30 April 2023.” We assume this means school holidays, although it seems to work for February Half Term so perhaps not?

You need to have at least 250 Avios in your account to be eligible.

Can you pay for your entire flight with Avios?

No.

Unlike Virgin Atlantic, which lets you ‘part pay with points’ up to the entire value of your booking, British Airways only lets you pay the base fare, excluding all taxes and charges.

There are further limits as part of this deal.

For return flights, the only discounts available are (per person)

  • £10 off for 500 Avios
  • £18 off for 900 Avios
  • £32 off for 1,600 Avios
  • £56 off for 2,800 Avios
  • £80 off for 4,000 Avios
  • £100 off for 5,000 Avios

For one-way flights, these numbers are halved:

  • £5 off for 250 Avios
  • £9 off for 450 Avios
  • £16 off for 800 Avios
  • £28 off for 1,400 Avios
  • £40 off for 2,000 Avios
  • £50 off for 2,500 Avios

Each option gives you 2p per Avios, which is exceptionally generous. If you are making a BA booking from Gatwick this weekend, you’d be crazy not to take advantage of this offer up to the maximum number of Avios allowed.

How to get 2p per Avios on British Airways flights

In order to make use of the offer, you need to book a ‘standard’ cash ticket, flying from Gatwick. Once you’ve selected your flight and class, you’ll be presented with various options to use Avios to save on the cash element of the ticket:

All you need to do is select the option you want to use. As you are getting a flat 2p per Avios with all the options, there is no benefit to choose one over the other – just how much you want to save (and how many Avios you have to spend!)

Conclusion

If you had been planning to book any British Airways Gatwick flights, this offer is a great opportunity to redeem some Avios for a discount at an exceptionally good rate.

The offer ends at 23:59 on Monday evening, so you only have a few days to make the most of it.

You can find full details on this page of ba.com.

  • Save East Coast Rewards says:

Any idea if it works the other way? In other words somewhere-LGW-somewhere rather than LGW-somewhere-LGW.

If you don’t know I’ll update this thread once I’ve given it a try later today

    • Save East Coast Rewards says:

To answer my own question, the answer is no, these rates aren’t showing when I tried CTA-LGW-CTA

      • ChrisBCN says:

You could try booking both legs as one ways – you should get the offer on LGW-somewhere

  • lumma says:

Is there an easy way of finish out where they fly to from Gatwick? Most of the routes under “airlines and destinations” on the Gatwick Wikipedia page are coming up as Heathrow departures for me

    • Save East Coast Rewards says:

I copied this from a FlyerTalk wiki, it might be out of date but will give you an idea, note that the start dates are for this year so you can ignore them.

      • Dr Tom says:

Thanks, are any of these 160 TP routes? Just working out if it’s worth trying to hit the 300 TP requalification for Silver before the end of the year.

        • lumma says:

Greece, Turkey and Malta. Not sure if every Greek airport is tho

        • Jack says:

Catania, Greece, Turkey,Malta and Greece all earn 80tps each way as they are longer routes so come under short haul plus

        • secretsquirrel says:

Was about to say that this looks good for a TP run!

        • Craig says:

300 TP requal for Silver, do you mean that’s what you need?

Otherwise, the reduced TP requal (until end of year) for Silver is 450, not 300.

          • Dr Tom says:

Thanks everyone. There was an offer for 300 TP renewals if your year end date fell at a certain point in the year, also avoid until the end of 2022. I hope that’s still valid for me, but I’m suspect Rob hasn’t mentioned it as it adds yet more confusion.

Shall price up some of the routes over the weekend.

          • Rob says:

300 was for year ends of 8 July / 8 Aug / 8 Sep IIRC.

          • Dr Tom says:

No idea how I thought “valid” and typed “avoid”! Perhaps my brain trying to tell me something?

      • BajanNation says:

Just be careful, as some of these destinations also fly from LHR too.

      • George K says:

Do be careful – some of these routes are either on their way out, or not coming back for winter. Athens from Gatwick, for example, ends on the 30th of October and doesn’t look like it’s back at the moment

  • freckles says:

Dr Tom – see other news article today about Avios points, this gives link to which routes are 160 point returns

  • Willmo says:

Looks like there may be a minimum fare price needed for the larger Avios amounts.

I’m looking to buy a £61 ticket, and it will only give me the options up to £28 for 1,400 Avios, not the £50 for 2.5k.

    • Rob says:

That’s because you can’t use Avios to pay taxes and charges, which are clearly going to be more tha £11 (the APD alone is higher than that).

  • Random says:

Has anyone found a flight with the 100£ for 5000 points off yet? and to where + what days? I can’t find it at all. Ive been checking between these dates 20 October 2022 – 30 April 2023.

    • Rob says:

Seems an odd question – I mean …. if your flight is so cheap that it doesn’t cost £100 + taxes, meaning you can’t use the full £100 discount, surely that’s a good thing?!

Or are you saying that there are flights costing £100 + taxes but where it isn’t offering the £100 discount?

    • Vincent Teo says:

I’m going skiing 21st Jan for 7 nights. Shows £100 off for 5000 points in Business. Bargain!

  • sayling says:

Buggeration – booked three nights in Verona (with hotel, thus a BA holiday, so probably wouldn’t properly qualify anyway) in December, just to get wifey over the line for Gold.

    Ah well

  • Ya says:

I was looking LGW > LYS during Christmas time and had the option to use £100 for 5000 points.
Also something to note is the first flight has to be from LGW but the return flight does not have to.

  • Concerto says:

    No Geneva or Zurich?

    • Roger* says:

Sadly no. ZRH has been my regular route for decades, on DA, BA, Go and Aer Lingus as well as quasi-scheduled charters. BA no longer offer this route, only easyJet.
